3 Greetings from the East Easterly Greeting My Brothers: Now that Winter has passed and Spring is upon us, I d like to take a moment to reflect on where we have been as a Lodge so far this year. We are off to a great start! Our Lodge has performed an Entered Apprentice Degree, a Fellow Craft degree and a Master Mason degree. Many brothers have taken on new roles for these degrees (myself included) and done spectacular work. We even had EA s and a Fellow Craft take on roles in the Entered Apprentice degree! We have had some great Masonic Education at our meetings and we have hosted three thematic dinners: The Keystone Kops, Ladies/Widows Night, and Widows Sons Appreciation Night. All have had exceptional attendance. We also had a fun social event with brothers and family at the Arcadia Rodeo! I m guessing that we made a dozen or more presentations to brothers from the newest members to 50-year members; honoring those who have served their lodge and country. We even hosted the Master Mason Association where we served an outstanding meal (thanks Br. Bracken!) and provided some insightful Masonic Education (thanks Br. Brandon!) All of this and we are just getting started. During the month of April, I hope that you get some time to reflect on the many blessings that we have as men and Masons. We are truly fortunate and I m hoping that I can appeal to many of you to help support our upcoming Capital Campaign focused on preserving the legacy of our Lodge property. Our brothers who came before us pretty much had their choice of land across Venice to build the lodge building. They had the foresight to pick a great location above the flood plain and centrally located in the community which has developed around it. It is now time to make the investment in and around the property that will get us to the 100-year mark! In the coming months, I will be sharing a plan to raise funds to make the necessary improvements and updates that our lodge desperately needs. I am hoping that I can count on you to invest in the future of Venice Lodge. Our April dinner on the 15 th, will be in honor of Past Masters. So, if you are a Past Master of our lodge or another, let us buy you dinner as a thank you for your service. Please RSVP with Br. Bracken or our wonderful chef, Deb Simms. I m sure she will have a delightful meal planned. Br. Corkran will be presiding in the East on April 8 at 7PM for a Fellow Craft degree. Please make every effort to attend in support of our three brothers being passed. Take a look at the calendar at the end of the Trestle Board for other upcoming events. Please let me know if you have any ideas for social gatherings over the next few months. I m hoping to arrange a beach clean-up event and Br. Broome is working on getting a date where we can show up at our local Chili s restaurant and receive a portion of our check proceeds donated back to the lodge. 4 Greetings from the West Happy April Fools Brothers, don t worry no April Fools pranks from the West just hopefully some interesting news concerning the Craft. Congratulations are in order to our newest Master Mason Brother Timothy Ferndon who was raised 16 March 19. I would also like to say a job well done to our degree team who, as usual, did an outstanding job. Our own W:.M:. Adam Kendall sat for the first time as King Solomon for the second half and was right kingly. Thank you to all the brothers who came out to support our brothers in this degree. I believe everyone had a great time and the dinner provided by our JW Darren Bracken was fantastic, I m glad I m not following him in the line the bar just got set pretty high. Just in from the Master Mason Association, the Annual Chili Cook-Off to offset the Grand Master s Visit will be held at the Sarasota Shrine on 27 April Brother Alan Meudt will be representing Venice Lodge this year so come out eat chili and support your lodge and have a great time. Just a reminder the Venice Shrine Club is holding a North Carolina Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork BBQ fund raiser on 7 April 2019; 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Venice Shrine Club. Tickets are $ See Br. Bracken/Junior Warden for tickets. Everybody knows North Carolina BBQ is the best! The Masonic Tile fund raiser is almost ready for the first order. The tiles are $35.00 each and you do not have to be a Mason or a Master Mason to order a tile or to have a tile dedicated in your name. If you would like to order a tile for a Mother/Father, Sister/Brother, Friend, Dog or Cat, etc. it s good. The list will be available at our April first meeting for the brother s review. The lodge improvements keep rolling along; you can t escape the smell of fresh paint. If any brother has ideas or suggestions on how we can improve our lodge please see one of your officers. We welcome any and all ideas. Also if you have any suggestions for fund raisers or community involvement projects please bring them forward. The Officers Meeting will be held on 22 Apr 19, at 6:30 pm, you do not have to be an officer to attend the meeting. All Master Masons are welcome. This is a good place to bring up ideas for the lodge. Hope to see you there. 5 Greetings from the South Spring is here and we are onto the 2 nd quarter of Late March was a blessing with beautiful weather once the pollen was washed away. Congratulations to our newest Master Mason Br. Timothy Ferndon. We attempted a outdoor Master Mason degree but due to weather, had to perform the degree in the Lodge. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the outstanding chicken dinner. We have a Fellow Craft degree scheduled for April 8 th to pass along our EA s Christopher Bowman, Keith Higgins, Cody Houck and Joseph Neunder, please come out and fill the side lines for our Brothers. A dinner will be served along with dessert. There is also a Master Mason degree April 6 th at Phoenix lodge starting at 9am for those that would like to go out and support them. Our Fraternity is growing Brothers. The Grand Communication is coming up May 26-29th in Orlando Fl. Make your reservations soon. Also make sure you have your signed dues card with you when you arrive. The charity of the month is Loveland Center at 157 S. Havana Rd, Venice Fl. providing services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with programs in education, life skills and employment training. We will be having our family dinner on April 15 th. Our Chef Deb is sure to have a great meal prepared including dessert. Many thanks to the assistance of the Cross family who have volunteered their time on several occasions to come into the lodge and set the dining room up with table settings and placemats I also want to thank Brothers Russ Mattson and Chik Livinghouse who are always helping with the kitchen duties serving and even with the cleanup. Our Family Dinner is open to everyone, please send me your reservations and bring your friends along. Another food event will be held on April 7 th at Venice Shrine Club located at 91 S. Auburn Rd. See the flyer in this Trestle Board. It will be slow cooked North Carolina Pulled Pork with all the fixins. Our own Chik from Venice Lodge No.301 will be chef for the day. 7 Masonic Education THE TEST Several years ago, the story is told of a Mason who always wore his Masonic ring and lapel pin when in public. On some occasions, he rode the bus from his home to the downtown area. On one such trip and when he sat down, he discovered the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it." Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter; who would worry about this little amount." Anyway, the transit company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet. When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change." The driver with a smile replied, I noticed your Masonic ring and lapel pin. I have been thinking lately about asking a Mason how to join. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. You passed the test. Can you tell me how to become a Mason?" When the Mason stepped off the bus, he said a silent prayer, Oh God, Grand Architect of the Universe, I almost sold you and my beloved Masons out for a mere quarter." Our actions are the only Masonic creed some will ever see. This is a really almost scary example of how people watch us as Masons and may put us to the test even without us realizing it! Always be diligent, whether it be at the theater, restaurant, grocery, service station or just driving in traffic. Remember, whether it be a lapel pin, a ring, or an emblem on the car, you carry the name of our great fraternity on your shoulders whenever you call yourself a Mason. 9 Masonic News & Events ANNUAL GRAND COMMUNICATIONS th Annual Grand Communication of the Grand Lodge The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Florida will hold its 190th Annual Grand Communication on Monday, May 27th thru Wednesday, May 29th, It will be held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, located at 9700 International Drive, Orlando, Florida, The schedule has not yet been released, but will be updated as soon as it is finalized. For more information, please visit: The Scottish Rite is widely considered to be the University of Masonry. You are invited and encouraged to spend one weekend in Tampa at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on May 18 th & 19 th. Witness numerous degrees performed on stage in full costume by members of the Scottish Rite. There is nothing for you to memorize. You just, watch, learn, and enjoy.
