3 3 FROM THE EAST June 17th great talk by W Casey Fletcher from Bartow with a crowd of at least 50 for the pot luck dinner, handled by Br. Lynn, and about 45 for the Stated Communication. FREE COLOR TV door Prize or $250 cash (your choice) will be given away at our December 16th dinner. Winner must be present to accept. ONE FREE ticket for this door prize will be given to each person over 18 who attends our Family Dinners, Pot Luck Dinners, or other special events. THREE FREE tickets will be given to each person who makes a dinner reservation at least 72 hours in advance (that s 6 pm Friday evening for a Monday dinner). Reservations must be made to Br. Steve Murphy, preferably via at: steve.murphy654@gmail.com or by phone at (941) Thanks for your cooperation. Recycle your old cell phones and ink cartridges and help the Venice-Nokomis Rotary Foundation provide scholarships. The Rotary Club has provided $3,000 in donations to our Lodge over the past three years for our CHILD ID PROGRAM, so I have placed a collection box inside the Lodge for your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Please bring them in. You can recycle them and help provide scholarships in Venice at the same time. Bros. Steve Murphy & Blair Post will be asking the members to sign up to help at the Sun Fiesta. Everyone is asked to work at least one shift. Please give your preferred time slot request to them. You could make this process easy if YOU approach THEM to volunteer and not wait to be asked. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and volunteers are needed. On June 22nd we held a Road Rally & Fish Fry chaired by Br. Milne (RR) and R W Hart (FF) assisted by Bros. Malmfeldt, Baltimore, Greene, Steelman, Shauan, W Pick, and Ladies Carol Milne, Sarah Shauan, Louise Craig, and Marilee Greene. Publicity was handled by Br. Post (Gondolier) and W Crimi (Facebook). For the Road Rally, 1st prize (a $25 gift card donated by the Daiquiri Deck) was won by the Sims team, 2nd place was the Shauan team, 3rd place was the Pick team. There is now a plaque in the dining room with the name of the 1st place winners on it, with room to add other winners in future years. R W:. Richard Cervi also made a generous donation during the event. Music was provided by the Cross Girls, Kalli & Kelli, under direction of Br. Jim & Lady Ann Cross. Our Lodge netted about $750. Thanks to all of you! Due to an impossible work schedule W Kern has been unable to teach any catechism this year. W Lou Kelly who has been filling in as Lodge Instructor during the past 6 months will officially take over those responsibilities effective immediately. Br. Menosky s work in Sarasota prevents him from being able to commit to his duties as Jr. Deacon. On occasion he has worked in the kitchen without even having the time to attend the meetings. That is not fair to him. Br. Gene Scheuring will take over his duties. July 15th will be the official visitation of our new DDGM, R W Norman F. Cyphers. He promises that the meeting will be a short one. Please try to attend to support your Lodge and your DDGM. Officers are asked to wear white jackets that evening as a sign of respect. We have a new water fountain in the dining room. W Kelly was able to snag one for us for free! Thanks, W Lou. We have a limited number of new powder blue shirts for sale at the Tyler s station. Fraternally, W Jeff Pick Worshipful Master W Barry Hart (L) and Br. Scott Steelman (R) cooked and served over 50 meals at the Fish Fry First Place Winners of the Road Rally Br. Ed and Lady Deb Sims Photos of June 22 Events Kalli and Kelli Cross provided musical entertainment during the afternoon Br. Walt and Lady Linda Milne challenged us with their clues for the Road Rally 4 Jonny Shauan, who helped his parents Br. Ed and Lady Sarah win second place
4 5 Brethren, FROM THE WEST We are now well into the summer season and many of our Brothers from the North have returned back to their homes until the fall. Our Lodge will be semi-dark now through the month of September. During the summer months we usually see a decline in members attending the monthly Stated Meetings. Your Officers understand that this time of the year many Brothers plan their family vacations and are not able to attend the Stated Meetings. This message is for the Brethren that will be at home and are able to attend our Monthly Dinners and the Stated Meetings. The Officers of Venice Lodge no. 301 would really like to see the sidelines as full as possible and we welcome Brothers who haven t attended Lodge for awhile to come back and enjoy the fellowship with us. I have heard that some Brothers who have not been in Lodge for awhile feel that they may be a little Rusty with their work and are leery of coming back but I assure you all that we are a Fraternal Brotherhood and will help any Brother who may have forgotten some of our customs and rituals. June was a busy month at the Lodge. During the Stated Meeting we had the pleasure of hearing a dissertation on the first Three Degrees in Masonry delivered by W Casey Fletcher. The discussion was very interesting and informative with a question and answer period afterwards. The Lodge was full that evening, as we had Brothers from Phoenix Lodge no. 346, Englewood Lodge no. 360 and North Port Lodge no We were happy to receive all of these Brothers into our Lodge to attend our June meeting, but we knew that they all had an alternative reason for being there. Our Lodge was in possession of the District 27 Traveling Gavel and they were all there to take it away to their own Lodge. That night North Port Lodge no. 406 outnumbered the other two Lodges and took the Traveling Gavel. We also held the First Annual Venice Lodge no. 301 Road Rally on Saturday June 22 with a Fish Fry afterwards. The event was well attended and everyone had a great time. The Lodge is also in need of Brothers to help with Catechism classes and with Mentoring. If anyone is interested in assisting with Catechism class instruction please contact W Lou Kelly, and R W Rodger Craig is always happy to receive help with his Mentoring Corps. I will also be seeking volunteers to work the Sun Fiesta Belly Buster Hotdog and Brat stand. If you are willing to put in a few hours for a good cause please see me before or after our meeting in July and we will add your name to the list. See you in the Lodge. Fraternally, Br. Steve Murphy, Senior Warden Brethren: FROM THE SOUTH I would like to take this opportunity in this Trestleboard, of thanking the volunteers who assisted me in setting up the tables and also at the end of the pot luck meal with clean up. Especially R W Roger Craig and his Lady Louise. Also thanks to all who brought the starters and desserts to make this a well attended pot luck dinner a success! As you all know I attended Grand Lodge at the end of May with the Senior Warden, Worshipful Master and other members of our Lodge. This was my first USA Grand Lodge and I was very impressed. Very different from Grand Lodge in Ireland. At our last meeting we lost the traveling gavel to North Port lodge, hopefully we can travel to get it back. I will be looking for volunteers to assist me in this endeavor and will advise you when we can travel, and to what lodge. Please advise if you can assist me. The charity of the month will be Boy Scout Troop 77 - Venice Florida. Our next communication will be on the 3rd Monday in July. The communication on the 1st of July will be dark. Fraternally Derek Lynn, Junior Warden On June 17, 2013 W Casey Fletcher talked about the typical questions raised during the Three Degrees W Lou Ortt gave a presentation on the meaning of Americanism in honor of Memorial Day May 20, 2013 CHARITY OF THE MONTH Boy Scout Troop 77- Venice, FL 6
5 7 BIO CORNER R W Barry D. Hart R W Barry D. Hart was born on March 28, 1954 in Pensacola, Florida and was graduated from Butler High School in in Georgia in He obtained a B.A. degree in sociology/anthropology from Georgia Southern College in 1979, then continued his studies in archeology at the University of Florida. He met Barbara, his wife, through Br. Steve Hoss Weatherly in 1996 and got married on November 15, He has two sons, one daughter, and one granddaughter. Both of his sons are Masons, as is his father, and one cousin. R W Hart became a Master Mason on April 12, 1988, a 33rd degree member of the Scottish Rite in 2007, served as Master of Venice Lodge No. 301 in 2011, and was District Deputy Grand Master of the 27th Masonic District in He has made many friends and met many admirable men through Masonry and wishes he had become a Master Mason when he was 21. R W Barry moved back to Sarasota in July of 1985, became a New York Life agent in February of 1986 and is the owner of Hart & Hart Financial, Inc. selling life, health, disability, long term care, and financial products. Favorite hobbies include hunting, bowhunting, motorcycling, reading, scuba, and geocaching. Still on his bucket list: learn the EA & MM lectures, earn his gold card, ride the Harley to Alaska & back, and shoot a bull with an arrow. If he won the $25 million LOTTO he would split his $15 million net (after taxes) as follows; put $7.5 million into a deferred annuity, put $3 million into trust for his kids, pay off the houses, and after a Jeff Pick world cruise he would go back to work. He d also learn to fly and take that motorcycle ride to Alaska and back. Growing up his heroes were Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle. He is most proud of his children. If he could meet anyone living or dead he would chose Albert Pike and/or George Washington. Interesting fact: he once worked as a federal peanut inspector. Headline he would like to see: Tampa Bay Rays win the World Series. One favorite saying he has is that worry is the tax you pay on a debt you many not owe. When he s gone he hopes that people would say Barry was honest and he was fair. BIO CORNER W Hampton Crimi W Hampton Lee Crimi was born on August 20, 1970 in Homestead, Florida, but spent his childhood in Nassau, Bahamas (since his grandfather was a ship captain). He moved to Venice in 1976 and was graduated from Venice High School in 1988 and went on to complete the art program at Ringling School of Art & Design. He started his own business 20 years ago and does decorative art, mural and faux finish work. His business has taken him to Mexico and all over the country but he likes Florida the best, especially for raising a family. He met Nicole at night school at Manatee Community College when a mutual friend introduced them. They married on October 22, 1993 and have one daughter and one son. The thing he is most proud of is his family. W Crimi joined Masonry in 1997 because of an interest in following tradition and an avid love of history. His grandfather, great grandfather, great uncles, and many others further back were all Masons. His daughter is a Rainbow Girl and his son is a member of DeMolay. Besides a continuation of a family tradition, he has gained great lasting friendships, a more purposeful life, and a better understanding of the Craft his Grandfather loved. W Hampton s hobbies include motorcycle riding, boating, fishing and MARTIAL ARTS. In fact, he is 3rd degree black belt in Karate-Jutsu, SAN- GAKU BUJUTSU RENMEI, and was a private student/deshi under Soke James R. Horne (10th Dan). He would like to train others in martial arts. He also enjoys doing anything with his kids. If he won the $25 million LOTTO he would first talk to a good accountant, get a good lawyer, then get out and travel. He still wants to do lots of motorcycle rides: Alaska, cross-country coast to coast runs, and go to Lakonia. W Crimi s heroes growing up were; Steve Austin (the $6 million man), Superman, Batman, and two real people, his grandfather (Capt. George Skelton) and his uncle (Jeff Southall). If he could meet any persons living or dead the following would be on his list; Morehei Ueshiba, Albert Einstein, Ayn Rand, Nikola Tesla, Kahlil Gibran, Jesus, Miyamoto Musashi, and Hunter Thompson. If he were king of the world he would make common sense common again. Headlines he would like to see would include the following: John Gault Wins Election; Balanced Budget reached; Socialism has failed the Founding Fathers plan has gone viral; or Liberalism No More. 8

7 11 BIO CORNER W Rocky Kearney W Rocky Kearney was born in Kenmore New York, near Buffalo on Nov. 8, 1954 and was graduated from Kenmore West Sr. High School in His hero growing up was his father. He met Wendy in Venice and after dating for 13 years they were married at the 2011 Hillbilly Convention at the Sahib Shrine on Sept 30, His family includes Wendy s daughter, Gena and grandson, Austin, who are here with them in Florida and Wendy s Son, Brian, and wife, Jami, and 2 more grandchildren, Alex & Emma who live in Howell MI. W Kearney was a DeMolay until he was 21, then was raised on November 19, 1976 at Master Builder s lodge 911 because his father was a Mason and it was something he always wanted to become. He shared many Masonic events with his father. He became a dual member of Venice Lodge on Sept. 15, 2003 and Worshipful Master of the Lodge in He has since affiliated with North Port Lodge as well. He has already received what he hoped to get from becoming a Mason, and that is feeling better about himself as a person. His Masonic highlight so far is becoming Chief Rabban of the Sahib Shrine and he is scheduled to become Potentate in W Rocky has owned a custom cabinet shop in North Port for the past 26 years and loves working with his hands. He believes that if you can t put in a day s work and take a picture of what you ve done, then it isn t worth working. That is why he could never work in an office job. He also works as a pyro technician, which he considers a hobby as he enjoys the danger and excitement of blowing things up in the pyro technician shows. Other hobbies include riding motorcycles, boating, and scuba driving (he was also a scuba instructor). All of these hobbies he enjoys with his wife, Wendy. He moved to Florida in He thought if Florida was a good enough place for people to save, retire and move here, he would move here while he was young enough and help them spend their retirement money. Interesting fact: he joined the Polar Bear Club in Buffalo by jumping into the freezing cold water. He looks forward to becoming Potentate of the Shrine and would like to attend the Summer Olympics some day. He would love to see a headline that states that there are no wars going on and there is total peace on earth. When he s gone he would like people to say; He s gone? The salesman is concerned as he has an important appointment in the local town: "Don't worry says the farmer you can use my car, I will call a friend and get the car repaired while you go to the appointment". Off goes the salesman and a couple of hours later he returns but unfortunately the car is awaiting a part which won t arrive until the next morning. "It's not a problem," says the Farmer, "use my telephone and re-schedule your first appointment tomorrow, stay with us tonight and I'll see that the car is done first thing!" The farmers' wife prepares a wonderful meal and they share a glass of fine single malt during an excellent evening, the salesman sleeps soundly and when he awakes there is his car, repaired and ready to go. After a full English breakfast the salesman thanks them both for the hospitality. As he and the farmer walk to his car he turns and asks "My brother, thank you so much but I have to ask, did you help me because I am a Mason?" "No" was the reply, "I helped you because I am a Mason." - Author Unknown - Sickness and Distress by Br.
