3 FROM THE EAST Brethren, Thanks to all of our Brothers and Officers who attended the Stated Communication at Punta Gorda Lodge and also the dedication of West Coast Lodge in Bradenton by our Grand Master, M:.W:. Stanley L. Hudson. We are on a great roll with new Masons joining Venice Lodge! We currently have four new Entered Apprentice Masons who will give back their catechisms at a Called Communication at our Lodge on Monday, May 8 th at 7:00 pm before moving on to the Fellowcraft Degree. At our April 17 th meeting, two candidates were balloted on and approved to receive the Entered Apprentice Degree: Alan Edward Schudel and Aaron Matthew Oakley. Also, I just received another petition at our Wednesday Masonic luncheon at IHOP where 13 Brothers enjoyed lunch and great fellowship. (Note: our next luncheon will be on Wednesday, May 3 rd at Gold Rush BBQ on the Island of Venice.) Thank you to all of our Brothers who are working so hard to raise new Masons!! On Wednesday, May 15 th we are having a Widows Sons appreciation night at Venice Lodge. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm with our Stated Communication to follow at 7:30 pm. The Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association has brought many new good men into Masonry and has raised thousands of dollars for the Masonic Home of Florida, Shriners Children s Hospital and many other local charities. Come out to the Lodge for a fun evening! W:. Derek Lynn has organized an offshore fishing trip on Saturday May 20 th. If you are going and have not already given him a deposit of $50.00 cash, please do so. He will provide us with more details in the near future. The Deputy Grand Master, R:.W:. Richard G. Hoover will be at Phoenix Lodge No. 346 on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm to discuss proposed resolutions for the Grand Communication. All Master Masons are welcome to attend. We will discuss those resolutions at our Stated Communication on Monday, May 15 th. Just a reminder--- Grand Lodge Communication will be held in Orlando from May Your principal Officers will all be attending. All Master Masons are welcome to attend. Our next Stated Communication will be held at the Lodge on Monday, May 1 st at 7:30 pm. Attendance in the Lodge has been great, so let s keep the fellowship and attendance going! Thank you to all of our Northern Brothers who attended our meetings over the winter months, their attendance and participation was greatly appreciated by all!! Travel home safely. 4 FROM THE WEST Greetings, The days are getting longer and the nights shorter which brings us into summertime; including Hurricane season. Look at the Sarasota County Web site covering Hurricanes. There are many items which are relatively inexpensive that are very important if we want to weather the storm. Along with summertime come vacations and increased travel. If driving to relatives, friends or just sightseeing. Check the vehicle for, tire pressures, including the spare, jack etc. Those checks go a long way to having a good trip or a long layover for repairs. Upcoming events: - District Open Books at Sarasota No.147 on 5/13/2017, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Lodge Fishing trip is scheduled for May 20 th out of Venice. Contact PM Derek Last year s trip produced a plethora of assorted species including Grouper & Shark. - Master Mason meeting has been cancelled for May. This a call to the craft for any Brother who may be interested in and willing to join the line in the secretary s capacity. As you may consider this decision recall President John F. Kennedy : ask not what your lodge can do for you ask what you can do for your lodge. Well yes he said country not lodge, but you get the idea. Our next stated meeting will be on May 1 st, see you then. Remember, we will be dark for June, July, August and September. During these months our meetings will be only on the 3 rd Monday; our Family Dinner Meeting night. My brothers have a wonderful safe summer. Always strive to live by your obligation. 5 FROM THE SOUTH Greetings, I want to begin by wishing all of our brothers and their families travelling north for the summer a pleasant and safe trip. We will miss you! May will be a busy month this year with two stated communications, dinner, degree practices, a fishing trip, and Grand Communication. Please continue to check your as we may have additional updates as well. In continuing with the quarterly theme of making Venice a great community to live, work and play, I am pleased to announce that the Charity of the Month will be: Venice Area Beautification, Inc. Some of their projects that you may be familiar with are: the Venetian Waterway Trail their signature project which is a 10-mile trail along the Intercoastal Waterway; Freedom Walk at Patriots Park; West Blalock Park and Monty Andrews Arboretum; Ruscelletto Fountain; and several on-going public art projects. The organization is run by several volunteers and one staff coordinator. If you happen to see individuals in bright yellow t-shirts with Keep Venice Beautiful on the back, stop and say Thank You! and let them know that Venice Lodge supports their efforts. We have several EA s and a few new petitioners that are looking to get involved at lodge. Please make it a habit to welcome them and their families. Let s not wait until they are Master Masons to let them know that they can be engaged and part of the fraternity. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or helping with any aspect of engagement please let W: M: Scott Steelman or any of the officers know. We would greatly appreciate your support. 7 Masonic Education DRESS Shall a Lodge require of its Officers that they wear formal dress? The wisdom of so doing depends entirely upon circumstances and is a point which it is the prerogative of each constituent Lodge to decide, though much may be said in favor of formal dress cutaway coat, tuxedo, or full evening dress, since it is a mark of respect to the Fraternity. In any event, one thing is certain: if any of the Officers are required to wear formal attire all the Officers should wear it without exception; and if he and his colleagues wear it, the Worshipful Master should use a hat to correspond not a soft hat, straw hat, or a cap. The members will dress according to private taste and it is proper that they enter the Lodge Room with apron properly arranged beforehand, and any other regalia, jewels, etc., in due order. The custom prevails in some Lodges of having the Worshipful Master wear one type of dress (clothing) while the other Officers wear different styles of dress. The harmony of good taste will be better served if all dress alike. There is a philosophy in dress as in so many other things, and the dress proper to Masonic occasion is no exception. Its principle is good taste; its practice is to wear such attire as shows respect to the Brotherhood and expresses the dignity of Masonry. 7
