4 From the East Fraternal Greetings Brethren, Firstly I would like to thank the Degree Master J.W. Scott Steelman for the splendid Fellow craft degree, and his degree team for a job extremely well completed on February 23rd at 7pm. The team put a lot of practice in and it showed. A special thanks also goes to R.. W.. Barry D. Hart, once again another splendid, and well-presented lecture, which we all enjoyed. We now have 6 more new fellow craft s, now on their way to completing their Master masons degree. Thanks to all the attendees it was a good turnout. Everyone enjoyed snacks & fraternalship at the end of the degree. The lodge dinner on February 16th was a great success once again, thanks to our resident Chef Lady Deb Sims who works tirelessly and to all who assisted her. Reviewing the month of February We had two successful lodge meetings and a gracious visit from our DDGM R.. W.. Allen Sorbie. On the 16th February. There was 46 attendees that night for his visit to Venice Lodge 301. Br. s Bracken, Green, Kidwell, Wemes, Brecka and Duke. Congratulations my Brothers on your next step in Masonry. Br. Gene Scheuring, and Br Marcel Leclerc, were the EA brother s instructors and they put a lot of time in at the lodge, during instruction of the EA S, and it showed! Thank you for a great job Brothers, very much appreciated. These two Brothers were assisted by R.. W.. Cervi, thank you also for your assistance. Officers and Brethren of Venice Lodge 301, traveled to North Port Lodge to once again claim the Travelling Gavel, which again is in the safe keeping of our lodge. There was an attempt to take the gavel from us at the DDGM visit by Manatee lodge unfortunately Manatee did not have enough members, it was a valiant effort maybe next time. Another special thanks goes to Br. Marcel Leclerc, who repaired the gentlemen s toilet ceiling which had a large hole, what a great job, thank you again. Brethren as you all know, we will be having a Chicken BBQ at the lodge on Friday April 10th 2015 from 4:00pm -7:00pm, we had to change the venue, and date. Watch out for the tickets for this event, we will be sending them out, please support this lodge event. Also we are planning to have a sea fishing trip out of Sarasota on an 88 passenger vessel on May 23rd 2015 which is a Sat, if we have enough attendee s prices will be announced. 5 From the West Brethren, I would like to start by congratulating Br. Steelman on doing an outstanding F.C. Degree on the 23rd. R.. W.. Barry D. Hart also provided another flawless lecture. I always marvel at the depth of his Masonic knowledge. Venice and the 27th district is so lucky to have R.. W.. Hart. At the DDGM official visit on February 16th we had over 40 brothers on the sideline. They saw a great EA proficiency return by Br. s Bracken, Green, Kidwell, Wemes, Brecka, Duke. A big thanks goes out to Br. Marcel and Br. Gene for preparing the brothers. Great job!!!!. I would also like to thank R.. W.. Cervi for his assistance. others to enjoy long after we are gone. We should remember we are part of the greatest fraternity in the world. We would love to hear fund-raising ideas any brothers may have. 6 From The South Brethren, Congratulations to our newest Fellow Craft Masons: Darren Bracken, David Green, Donnie Kidwell, Micah Wemes, Wayne Brecka and Kadan Duke!! I was honored to sit in the East for your degree. You all did a great job with your EA Catechism and I am sure you are anxious to get started with your Fellow Craft Catechism. I want to thank my degree team for their dedication to Freemasonry and for all the hours of practice they logged in order to get ready to put on such a great degree! Thanks also to W:. Lou Kelly and W:. Dave Harris for all of their guidance and time they spent helping me to prepare for the degree. Their dedication and love for Freemasonry is awesome. Thanks also to everyone who sat on the sidelines for this degree. It is truly a great and humbling experience to preside in the East for a Masonic Degree. Happy St. Patrick s Day to all!! Deb has put together a traditional St. Patty s Day dinner for us which I am looking forward to! Join us for some awesome food and great fellowship. Our next family dinner will be held on Monday, March 16th, starting at 6:00 pm. I encourage everyone to come out and get a head start on St. Patty s Day with another great meal from Chef Deb. 10 Masonic Educa on WHAT IS A FREEMASON? Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternal organizations. The lessons Freemasonry teaches in its ceremonies, are to do with moral values. Freemasonry's acknowledgement, without crossing the boundaries of religion, is that everything depends on the providence of God. Freemasons feel that these lessons apply as much today as they did when it took its modern form at the turn of the 17th century. Despite what many people claim, Freemasonry is not in any way a secret society. Freemasonry's socalled secrets are solely used as a ceremonial way of demonstrating that one is a Freemason. In any case, Freemasonry has been exposed by the media for almost as long as they have existed. The real point of a Freemason promising not to reveal their secrets is basically a dramatic way of promising to keep one's word in general. Other reasons why Freemasonry cannot be called a secret society are that Freemasons do not promise to keep their membership a secret. Where and when Freemasons meet are matters of public record. It is ironic that Freemasons used to be quiet about their membership. They were and still are taught never to use it to advance their own interests. Critics have taken this the wrong way and think that there is something secretive and nasty because of the silence. Nothing could be further from the truth. way you would not tell someone the ending of a good book or a film, you would not tell someone about the ceremony. Freemasons are required to profess and continue in a belief in a Supreme Being. Their ceremonies include prayers, which are not in any way a substitute for religion. It has no theological doctrines, it offers no sacraments, and it does not claim to lead to salvation. By having prayers at its meetings Freemasonry is no more in competition with religion than, say, having a meal where grace is said. Freemasons are not allowed to discuss religion or politics at meetings. Freemasonry's aim is to encourage its members to discover what people from all different backgrounds have in common. As is all too well known, debate about religion and politics can lead to heated discussion rather than enlightenment. A Freemason is thus basically encouraged to do his duty first to his God, and then to his family and those who dependent on him. He is to help his neighbors through charity and service. None of these ideas is exclusive to Freemasonry, but all should be universally acceptable and Freemasons are expected to follow them. Masonic ceremonies are secular morality plays, which are learned by heart, by members of the lodge for the benefit of the person who is becoming a Freemason. Each ceremony has a message for the candidate. A further reason why Freemasons do not go around broadcasting their contents is simply because it would spoil it for the candidate. The same 10
