4 5 FROM THE WEST FROM THE SOUTH 6 Brethren, Brethren: Many thanks to all of the Brothers who volunteered at the Sun Fiesta Belly Buster Hot Dog s & Brat s booth, the turnout was outstanding! This year s effort was very successful due to all of your time and effort. Our next adventure to add to our coffers will be held at the Sarasota Medieval Fair at the Fair Grounds. We will again need volunteers to man a food booth. The food and booth will be provided by the fine people at the Fair. We need only man the booth for two weekends, November 16, 17 and 23, 24 from 9: 30 am until 5:00 pm each day. We must provide at least 8 people for each shift. The shifts will be from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, and from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Any Brother or Lady willing to help out can contact me at my steve.murphy654@gmail.com or phone me at ( preferred). On Monday, October 21 Venice Lodge hosted a fund raising dinner to raise money to buy Christmas gifts for the residents of the Masonic Home who have no relatives in the immediate area. This project has been headed by W:. Rocky Kearney and his Lady Wendy (it was Wendy s idea) for the past several years and it has brightened the faces of the residents each and every year. Our dinner was very successful thanks to all of the Brothers and their ladies from all of the Lodges, with special thanks to all of the members of the Widow s Sons who attended. Brother John Greene and his Lady Marilee outdid themselves AGAIN preparing and serving this outstanding meal. I can guarantee that no one left the building able to eat one more bite. I know that we will see some new and familiar faces at the upcoming meetings. If you haven t been to the Lodge in awhile please come to our Monthly Dinner and bring your family members or a guest and we will all enjoy the Fellowship. I hope to see you in Lodge. Fraternally, Br. Steve Murphy, Senior Warden The Sun Fiesta was a big success and the Lodge received much needed funds. I wish to thank the volunteers and brothers who gave their time so readily in assisting the Lodge with this annual event. The Chair for this event was Worshipful Lou Kelly who did an outstanding job in setting up and planning, assisted of course by our Senior Warden Br. Steve Murphy who staffed the event. On attending the Grand Masters visit, in Sarasota, it was brought to our attention that the Masonic home is desperately in need of funds. The Grand Master requested us to encourage our members to go to the Masonic home site and sign up to contribute $100 a year to the Masonic Home 100 Program (MH-100). This can be completed by using a credit card and works out to only just over $8.00 per month; donations can be monthly or just pay the $100 for the year. You are making an investment in the security of your future and that of every Master Mason and his wife. In our advancing years we may reach a time when our health may not allow us to either physically or financially support ourselves. Our Masonic Home is there for this specific purpose and we are here to continue to give "so far as we are able." The lodge dinner on the 18th November 2013 will be provided by myself. I will need support once again with setting this dinner up, assisting with cooking, table placement and of course clean up, if we have any brothers who like cooking your assistance would be invaluable. Please advise me at or by petamaka77@gmail.com. I am undecided at present as to what the main course will be. I will advise members in the near future of what our main course will be. Please RSVP to me if you are attending the dinner. Our next lodge meeting will be November 4th 2013 at 7.30 pm; I will provide a snack at the end of the meeting so we can all participate in fraternalship. The charity of the month will be All Faith's Food Bank in Venice FL. Fraternally, Derek Lynn, Junior Warden CHARITY OF THE MONTH All Faiths Food Bank Venice Masonic Lodge 301 Like us on Facebook Monitored by W Hampton Crimi
5 7 BIO CORNER R W John Wermann BIO CORNER W John Hobeika 8 R W John Wermann was born on March 25, 1945 in New Haven Connecticut and was graduated from West Haven High in From there he went on to the University of Hartford and joined the U.S. Army Reserves where he served for 6 years. W John Hobeika was born on June 23, 1966 in Gainesville, Florida. He was graduated from Venice High in 1984, then attended what is now called SCTI (Sarasota County Technical Institute), then two years at Sinclaire Junior College in Dayton, Ohio. He and Merri-Anne met in June of 1964 on a blind date in Hamdon, Ct and were married on Dec. 16, They have a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren. R W John wanted to volunteer at the Shriners Hospital but was told he needed to be a Mason. He got a petition from R W Eric West and W Rick Tacy and was raised in Venice Lodge in January He also joined because he wanted an opportunity to meet good Brothers and continue the Fellowship. He was Master of Venice Lodge and was Past District Deputy for District 27 for the Grand Lodge of Florida. He has just earned his KCCH in the Scottish Rite. In the York Rite, where he is a KYCH and KYGCH and the Order of Purple Cross recipient, he presently serves as Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. He says the highlights of his Masonic life were every moment of (his) Masonic career. R W Wermann was VP of manufacturing & plant manager for Cook-Bates from 1969 to (He and Merri-Anne now own their own cleaning company). They came to Florida because his former employer transferred him here in 1980 from Connecticut. Hobbies include Masonry and motor cycle riding. Pet peeve is backbiting. Hero as a kid was Superman who didn t need anything to be himself. Headline he would love to see: Conservatives Win in Landslide. If he were king of the world he would institute justice for all. One of his favorite sayings is: You can t fight city hall, but you sure can spit on the steps. R W John claims to be an excellent chef; his favorite dish to make is take out! (That s a gotcha). If he won the $25 million LOTTO he would share it with his children and deserving Brothers. He still has a long bucket list and every day brings something new. If he could meet anyone, living or dead, it would be Ronald Reagan True American President in (his) lifetime. If R W Wermann could do it all over again, he would not have listened to misguided people. He also would have joined Masonry as a younger man. He is most proud of raising his son-in-law (Br. A.J. Ahrens). The thought he would like to leave behind is that Every person is worth your consideration. When he s gone he hopes that people would say: He was always willing to help. He met Audra, who lived in the same community, through her sister. They were married on February 23, By sheer coincidence they were divorced exactly 10 years later to the day, February 23, They have one son, Vincent who is now 19 years old. W John has no relatives who are Masons, except his father. He joined the Masons in 2002 to meet others and to socialize. Highlights of his Masonic career so far, were being Worshipful Master of Venice Lodge in 2009 and going through the different positions to get there. Masonry has helped him become a better person. W Hobeika is a self employed air conditioning technician. He has been doing this since When he is not working, his hobbies include fishing, hunting, and target practice. If he won the $25 million LOTTO he would live well and travel to warm climates, like the Pacific islands, or maybe Europe again, or take a cruise to Australia. If he could meet anyone living or dead, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin would be on the list because they were cool. One of his pet peeves is incomplete work by others. He is most proud of his son. One of W John s favorite sayings is There s a Frank Burns in every profession, bumbling, but talented. This alludes to the character in the TV series MASH. If you ve seen the series then you know what this means. When he s gone he would like people to say: Loved by all, hated by none, and He harmed no one. A headline he would like to see is Harmony & World Peace are Achieved. In 1978 W Hobeika competed in the qualifying competition in Cincinnati, Ohio for the Junior Olympics in freestyle swimming and the backstroke, and finished as first alternate in the backstroke. If one person ahead of him had not gone to the Junior Olympics, W John would have made it. His one regret is that he did not stay on the swim team past Junior High School.

8 13 MASONIC EDUCATION Submitted by W Hampton Crimi What Attracts a Man to Freemasonry? Every man comes, of his own free will and accord, with his own individual needs and interests. One man may join so that he can associate with other men who believe that only by improving themselves can they hope to improve their world. Another man may join because he is looking for a focus for his charitable inclinations. And yet another may be attracted by a strong sense of history and tradition. Many join simply because they knew a friend or relative who was a Freemason and they admired that man s way of living his life. All who join and become active discover a bond of brotherly affection and a community of mutual support; a practical extension of their own religious and philosophical beliefs. - Author Unknown - 11/08/62 Br.
