Although there are several contenders for the honor of who created the first ice cream cone, my personal favorite story comes to us from the summer of People at the St. Louis World s Fair had walked for hours in the hot sun and they were ready for something to cool them off. Many of them chose to line in front of the booth of Arnold Fornachou to get a taste of his frosty ice cream. The problem was that Arnold s ice cream was so popular he quickly ran out of paper bowls. The moonlighting teenager scrambled to keep his potential customers by washing and reusing the few ceramic bowls he had on hand. But no matter how hard he worked, many people grew tired of waiting and wandered off in search of another treat. That s when an unlikely partner emerged to save the day.» See EPISTLE, pg. 3

In the booth next to Arnold s he was selling a wafer-thin Persian confection called a zalabia. That is, he was offering them but no one was buying. When Ernest saw his neighbor s plight, he was struck with an out-of-the-box idea. Grabbing a warm zalabia, he twisted it into a cornucopia shape and rolled it in sugar. Then he ran over to Arnold s booth and offered it to him. Still scrambling to wash bowls and wait on customers, Arnold didn t understand what the older man had in mind. But when Ernest handed an ice cream scoop atop a confection cone to a waiting customer, Arnold instantly got the message. A huge smile spread over his face, and in no time, the two men were working side by side Ernest made edible bowls, Arnold scooped ice cream. Back then, they were called World s Fair Cornucopias, and they were the hit of the fair. Two people working together had an idea that created something that would be enjoyed by millions for generations to come. Imagine what would happen if we worked together in the same way? Laying aside our differences, thinking out of the box and taking a chance. Who knows what we could create? This summer, take a chance, think out of the box, and do something bold! Blessings, Pastor Vic The church office is following a summer schedule of hours. On Fridays, the office will be open 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The regular office schedule will resume Monday, Aug. 25. 4 River In the Bible, rivers (and other bodies of water) often represent deliverance, salvation, freedom and cleansing. The Jordan River is especially prominent: The Israelites crossed it to enter the Promised Land after God delivered them from slavery, and John baptized Jesus (and many other people) there. The image of crossing the Jordan River has long been a metaphor for death crossing from earthly to heavenly life, from worldly struggles to the bliss of God s kingdom, from physical ailments to the wholeness of a resurrection body. 4» July-August 2014 Perry Scope

8 Wedding Coordinator Couples who get married at Perry Hall UMC are ably assisted by our wedding coordinator, Kim Cole. She took over the job from Terry Butler. Kim sets up the candles, flowers, and paraments and runs the rehearsals. Sometimes, she is asked to order and arrange for the flowers as well. She always remains in the Sanctuary during the ceremony to take care of any last-minute emergencies. Kim told me of several memorable weddings she has assisted. In one, the bride s mother was remarried to the groom s father, so seating guests on the groom s or bride s side of the sanctuary was pretty much impossible. One wedding featured 300 guests and 14 bridesmaids! In still another wedding, the very young ring bearer was transported down the aisle in a wagon pulled by the slightly older flower girl! Kim remembers occasions when doves were released, bagpipe music was included and, of course, there were sometimes family issues to deal with. Ceremonies are usually scheduled for a Saturday afternoon or evening. That allows for the flowers to be utilized during our Sunday services. On two occasions, the congregation served as witnesses for weddings conducted during our church services. Ken and Sheila McCracken and Danny and Dawn Darnall chose to share their special days with the church family. Over the years, the number of weddings in our church have diminished. But those who have chosen to be married in our sanctuary have enjoyed a beautiful setting and a wonderful wedding coordinator. Did You Know? is a feature of the Perry Scope that will highlight little-known activities, services, opportunities, and unsung heroes at Perry Hall UMC. We welcome suggestions from the congregation. For more information or suggestions, please contact Peggy Whiting at (410) or peggywhiting04@yahoo.com. Summer Folk Music Nights feature music with a mission, award-winning folk Bob Sima brings his music with a mission as the featured performer for July s Folk Music Night. Sima works to make his audience feel something extra beyond the music. Check him out at In August, Chatham Street comes in on the heels of a new CD. This award-winning folk duo has played many revered venues along the East Coast, notably opening one time for Don MacLean. Check them out at www. chathamstreetmusic.com/. The July Folk Music Night is Saturday, July 12. August s performance is Saturday, Aug. 9. For all Folk Music Nights 7-10 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall the stage (and microphone) is open before and after the main act and light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. If you wish, you may bring a dessert or snack to share. Questions? Contact Neil Zimmerman at (410) Check out the Folk Music Night Web page at The following contributed to our Memorial Fund since May: In memory of Charles Gramlich: Pat Fisher In memory of Ruth Radcliffe: Lois Welsh In memory of Bill Jones: Bob & Carol Knapp In memory of Ed Funk: Bob & Carol Knapp Wizard was wrong: What a heart is really for As much as I love the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, I have a gripe with one line near the end. As the would-be wizard bestows on the scarecrow, tin man and lion symbols of what they ve been seeking but in fact already possess a brain, a heart and courage he says to the tin man, Remember... a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others. No! I always protest aloud. Society often functions as if it were so, but Jesus taught, Love one another as I have loved you (John 15:12, NRSV). How we relate to others our heart is indeed judged by how much we love. The only sense in which the wizard s words carry a sliver of truth is that we are judged by how much we re loved by God, who counts us precious through his grace.
