3 Raise your Easter voices to all peoples Pastor Vic s Epistle Easter is filled with many great hymns. One of my favorite hymns is Easter People, Raise Your Voices. The third verse says, Every day to us is Easter, with its resurrection song, when in trouble move the faster to our God who rights the wrong. This hymn reminds us that Easter is not just one day of the year. Every day we are given the opportunity for a, new life, and a fresh start. Throughout Easter, we hear stories of the ways that people experience the Resurrection. When the women reached the tomb on Easter morning, the men in white asked, Why do you look for the living among the dead? Their question reminds us that when we go looking for Jesus, we will find him not in the tomb but in other places, in the people we meet, in the situations that we find ourselves. As an Easter people, we are called to share our resurrection story with those in need. May we take the message of the Risen Lord with us wherever we go so that all my believe. Blessings, Pastor Vic Every day to us is Easter, with its resurrection song, when in trouble move the faster to our God who rights the wrong. Celebrate the miracle of the Resurrection and help fill our sanctuary with lots and lots of lilies! Time is running out for ordering these special flowers of spring. Lilies are available for $10 each. All orders must be placed and paid for by March 17. To order, fill out the form below and put in the offering plate or the flower coordinator s mailbox outside the church office. Questions? 4 Latin Cross The Latin cross is the simplest and most common form of the Christian cross, possibly dating from the second or third century. Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christians typically display a crucifix an image of Jesus hanging on the cross to remember his death for the sake of the world, while Protestant churches often favor the empty cross, commemorating Jesus resurrection. 4» March 2013 Perry Scope

5 This is Norman the lady bug. The youth painted him. He will be floating around the church. If he is seen, then pick him up and move him. (But don't tell anyone you have moved him.) Lock-In Paint Job During the lock-in on Feb. 8, the youth group let their creative colors flow, painting the upstairs Youth Room and some other things (see Norman the ladybug to the right). Check out their artistic wares sometime. March Madness tips off This Sunday, March 3, kicks off the youth s March Madness contest. 7 Praise Band During the early 1990s, Perry Hall UMC has services at 8:30 and 11, with Sunday School at 9:30. Pastor Bob Clipp was looking for a way to attract and engage young adults, especially those who dropped off their children for Sunday school. He asked Denise Boyd, the Music Director at the time, to accompany him to a workshop on Contemporary Worship. This led to the beginning of a Praise service led by Denise during the 9:30 Sunday school hour. The reaction waas less than overwhelmingly positive. Many felt the casualness of dress and the liveliness of the music disrespectful. There was considerable curiousity, however, about the entire project. Gradually, it did start to attract more congregants, including many young families. Dan Walker was the first to join Denise in the music accompaniment with his guitar. Later, Dan and Michelle Kalendek added their guitar and flute to the mix. Finally, Carl Elam rounded out the group on keyboard. Song lyrics were flashed on a screen using an overhead projector and transparencies, which had to be created weekly. Through a fundraiser, money was obtained to purchase a new sound system as well as our current video display and screen. Memorial money was used to purchase a new digital keyboard and bass guitar. The drum set was donated by our former drummer, Chuck Martin. The members of the Praise Band known as Crossbound have evolved through the years, but the Contemporary Service has proved its value, as it is now the most heavily attended our on Sunday morning. Thank you to Denise and her faithful crew of music makers! Did You Know? is a new feature of the Perry Scope that will highlight little-known activities, services, opportunities, and unsung heroes at Perry Hall UMC. We welcome suggestions from the congregation. For more information or suggestions, please contact Peggy Whiting at (410) or peggywhiting04@yahoo.com. HISTORY HELP NEEDED: We are looking for some helpers to sort out way through the boxes and boxes of files of Perry Hall church s history. Would you be able to give us a hand? We meet in Room 211 on Monday mornings, from Are you willing to commit for just one week? Or maybe a month? Any help would be appreciated. You can call Denise Boyd at , or just drop in any week! FOLK MUSIC NIGHT: The guitar duo known as Last Stone Thrown is this month s featured performers at Folk Music Night. Check out the duo from Overlea at The November Folk Music Night will be held Saturday, March 2, 7-10 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall. The stage (and microphone) is open before and after the main act and light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. If you wish, you may bring a dessert or snack to share. Questions? Contact Neil Zimmerman at (410) Check out the Folk Music Night Web page at MusicNight/. MARCH: Beef Stew, Baked Beans, Tuna Fish, Canned Fruit Please place the food in the blue food bins in the Fellowship Hall. EASTER EGG HUNT: This year s Hunt takes place on Sunday, March 24 (Palm Sunday) at noon. We are also including a Scavenger Hunt component for the older kids. Light snacks and donations are welcome. ZUMBA FITNESS: Zumba has arrived at PHUMC. This popular, new and fun fitness/dance/fellowship activity is being offered to adult women of the church (18 and over). Sessions are Mondays, 8-9 p.m., and Thursdays, 7:15-8:15 p.m. Space is limited, so we begin the invitation with our female church members first. Please invite a personal friend to come. Registrations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis on the night of the class. Not only will we have lots of fun, but $2 of the $5 registration fee (per class) goes directly to our church s General Fund. UPCOMING EVENTS: 3/17 Scout Sunday & Planting, 3/24 Easter Egg and Scavenger Hunt, 4/22 Earth Day Recycling Event & SWAP, 5/11 Mother s Day Tea. Also in the works are a Skateland Outing and Adults Mix & Mingle. If you have any questions, or would like to help, you can reach Amy Funk-Hines, Family Ministries chair, at (443) or phumcfamilyministries@gmail.com. Perry Scope March 2013» 7

8 Bible Quiz When Jesus was crucified, over what time period did darkness cover the earth? A. 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. B. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. C. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. D. 12 noon to 3 p.m. Answer: D (See Mark 15:33). Quoting Dare we set our hope and hearts in the hands of a small-town Jewish carpenter? The answer rests in the Jerusalem graveyard. If Jesus tomb is empty, then his promise is not. Max Lucado, Fearless Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people, and hallelujah is our song. Pope John Paul II Another Thought An Easter message On Easter Sunday 1544, pastor and church reformer Martin Luther proclaimed in a sermon: The conception and birth of every human creature... is no less a miracle and wonder-work of God than that Adam was made out of a clod of earth, and Eve out of a fleshy rib. The world is full of such works of wonder. ( On the Resurrection, The Table Talk of Martin Luther). That reminder holds yet today, that God brings life not only from death but from nothing. Easter joy Now let the heavens be joyful! Let earth her song begin! Let the round world keep triumph, And all that is therein; Invisible and visible, Their notes let all things blend, For Christ the Lord has risen, Our joy that hath no end. St. John of Damascus The greatest news Death carries with it a certain dread. It has always been the enemy, the great, mysterious monster that makes people quake with fear. Death stalks the rich and the poor, the educated and the uneducated. Death is no respecter of race, color or creed. Its shadow haunts us day and night. We never know when the moment of death will come for us. Is there any hope?... The greatest news that mortal ear has ever heard is the news that Jesus Christ has risen from the dead, as he had promised.... Because Christ lives, we also shall live. The greatest truth that you can ever hear is that Jesus Christ died but rose again, and that you, too, will die but can rise again into newness of life. Billy Graham Easter is timeless Easter is a moveable feast, falling any time between March 22 and April 25 on the Gregorian calendar. At a meeting of bishops in 325 A.D., Easter Sunday was set as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the northern hemisphere s vernal equinox. (Though the equinox can fall on March 19, 20 or 21, the church fixed March 21 as this date.) Over the years, branches of the church differed on the precise date for Easter, finally reaching agreement in the late 700s. Since 1582, however, when the Western Church adopted the Gregorian calendar while the Eastern Church retained the Julian one, the timing of Easter has sometimes varied between the two. Such computations are interesting but pale in light of the ultimate assurance that for Christians, every day is truly Easter. Christ s tomb is empty! Jesus defeated death! Whenever we worship, we celebrate resurrection. Date-bound by earthly calendars, the Feast of the Resurrection, by heaven s rendering, is eternal. Keep on believing Through major life challenges, Christian singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp has learned to walk by faith and cling to his hope in Christ. While he was growing up, Camp s family (which includes a brother with Down syndrome) struggled with poverty. When Camp was just 23, his wife of several months died of cancer. The first song Camp wrote after her death was the chart-topper I Still Believe. In the chorus, he sings: I still believe in Your faithfulness I still believe in Your truth I still believe in Your holy word even when I don t see, I still believe. Camp says trusting in God during life s valleys takes lots of courage. You can say, All right, Lord, I don t get it, but I m going to trust you, and go to the only One [who] offers life and hope and peace and joy. 8» March 2013 Perry Scope
