The birthday program is a great way to build the endowment fund. Just donate your age in dollars in your birthday month to help this fund grow. Happy Birthday! for providing hospitality and continental breakfast the next two Sundays Conversation Corner Summer Preaching Thank you to Cory Bys, Pam Crawford and James Estes for sharing the message with us during July so that Reverend Scott could take some vacation time. It s Choir Time! Rehearsals begin Wednesday August 3rd and our first Sunday is August 7th. Now is a great time to try something new to serve our church. God loves all voices and abilities to sing His praises. Agape Mission: Our Church provides volunteers to prepare and serve meals at Agape Mission in Bartlesville - every Tuesday from 10:00 to 2:00 - every second Saturday of the month from 9:30 to 2:00 This ministry is looking for a few more willing hands to help feed Bartlesville s hungry. You may work the morning shift, afternoon shift, or the whole time. If you would like to participate on a regular or periodic basis, please contact : Gene Wrich
3 Stop by during the week and meet our new Child Development Director Jennifer Rice. Jennifer lives on a small farm with her husband and three children. She enjoys gardening, taking care of her chickens and goats and watching her children grow. Jennifer is excited t o start this new career journey at Good Shepherd. Our fall session starts on August 22nd. Looking forward to seeing our returning kids and welcome the new ones to Good Shepherd! We are looking forward to a fun-filled fall session with lots of growing and learning. Helping Hands Ministry If you have simple needs at your home that can be addressed by a strong arm, a ladder-capable volunteer, or even a semi skilled crafts man, we re here to help. List your need on your Sunday response card or phone Julie at Once your request is received, it will be forwarded to one of the ministry team members who will phone you to get a better idea of the need, and how best to meet it. SUMMER FRIDAY OFFICE HOURS Good Shepherd will be closing at noon on Friday s during the summer; until Friday, August 19th. Monday through Thursday the office and facility is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CONCERN SUNDAY IS AUGUST 7 Don t Wait! Concern needs us to be generous the next few weeks. During the week of July 4th, the CONCERN Pantry was the only food pantry open in Bartlesville! It was one of those weeks CONCERN volunteers and staff won t soon forget. In just 12 hours the CONCERN Pantry served 48 households (135 individuals) that placed pantry orders. CONCERN provided 1700 pounds of food including meat, eggs, butter and bread to the hungry of Bartlesville a total of 1,620 meals. In addition, 78 individuals visited our bonus tables receiving nearly 1,000 pounds of produce and bakery items. Meeting summertime food needs is challenging. The children are home all day and even though there is a summer food program, it is not always possible for those with no resources or adequate transportation to take advantage of the breakfast and lunch provided. Those 3 days substantially reduced the amount of food in the pantry. The pantry needs canned fruit, canned meat (Treat/Spam, chicken, ham, tuna, etc.), Jiffy muffin mix, sugar, flour, pancake mix (made with water) personal care items (toothbrushes and paste, bar soap) and size 5 diapers. Please shop for these items or consider a monetary donation marked pantry. The Bartlesville community has always been generous and compassionate when asked for help, which CONCERN appreciates immensely.
4 And A Word from Our Sponsor Rancor is what I see in social media and news feeds. Violence, shootings, rants, raves. My side is right; your side is wrong. Anger, shaming, political posturing. Love is what I see in the cards that grace my piano top; love is what I see in the generosity of family and friends; love is what I see in spontaneous acts of kindness. Love is in the meal brought by a friend. Love is in a ride given. Love is in a hair stylist as she volunteers her time to shave my head. And wisdom is what I see from two authors whose eloquent words grip my soul: Love from the center of who you are; don t fake it. Don t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. Forget about deciding what s right for each other. Here s what you need to be concerned about: that you don t get in the way of someone else, making life more difficult than it already is. Help others with encouraging words. Cultivate your own relationship with God, but don t impose it on others. Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, How can I help? Eugene and Paul, collaborating across the centuries, remind me what is essential in life. Paul wrote the Greek; Eugene transposed it into twentieth century American English. I copied my pink highlights from Romans No matter how full or empty your schedule, no matter how influential or invisible your life, no matter how few or how many you impact each day, take heart in today s words from our sponsor. They are for all of us. Good Shepherd received this note thanking us for our continued support of Agape. This donation is made possible through Good Shepherds regular giving. You are appreciated. Acts 4:32 (NRSV) 32 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. Our support of Agape and other missions is made possible through your regular giving. Thursday, October 13, 2016 TULSA BOK CENTER PRESEASON GAME OKC THUNDER VS. 5 FROM THE PASTOR S PEN Jesus is calling would-be followers of the kingdom to sharpen lives... What s your favorite color? Is it more 450? Or do you tend towards 600? Maybe even 700? In case those numbers don t immediately mean anything to you, on the visible spectrum scale for light 450 nanometers means blue, 600 is yellow, and at 700 nanometers you are seeing red. But we don t see numbers, do we? We see the beautiful, variable, illuminating colors that light takes on as it is refracted and reflected before our eyes. We don t experience nanometers. We bask under a blue sky? Or we bathe in wonder at the beauty of a sunset that melts from orange to red to crimson and purple. Whether we catalogue light as 550 nanometers, or perceive it as green, is all a matter of perspective. Are we dissecting the idea of light into its most basic components (measured nanometers)? Or are we responding to the expression of that light as we experience it in the world (colors)? Light and salt. The world looks like a pretty dark place these days. The news from territory controlled by ISIS reveals one act of barbarism after another with children being sold as sex slaves and the routine crucifixion of those who oppose their despotism. Casting a global net, terror seems to have spread far and wide, even an 84 year old priest celebrating Mass was not immune to the chaos erupting seemingly every day. And in the midst of the darkness, there is as great as need as ever for preservation of the true, right, lovely, good and gracious. In Matthew s account of the Sermon on the Mount, immediately after Jesus lays out his blessed be Beatitudes, he lifts up two metaphors of how disciples of the kingdom will be known to this world. They will be the salt of the earth, they will be the light of the world, a light that will shine before others. Salt sharpens flavors. Light sharpens both sight and insight. Jesus is calling would-be followers of the kingdom to sharpen lives by living on the sharp, the cutting edges, the places where new perspectives, new tastes, and new visions are embraced. Light does not just banish darkness and illuminate corners and crevices. Light also works to provide a new perspective. In the light there is depth and shading that inform our sense of how things fit together. And with the light we get to see the true nature of things. True light allows the colors and variations of color to be seen and appreciated. A small fish in our pond a year ago seemed to completely black like his three sisters. But every so often he would venture into the light and his black scales almost became a velvet like blue. A year later he is a brilliant blue and white fish. But his true nature was revealed in light. Salt of course is a staple at our tables. We add salt to bring out flavors in foods that might other wise be under appreciated. Sometimes its taste helps set up a contrast so that salt and sweetness might be appreciated at the same time. Put salt on the rim of your favorite sweet drink and you ll see what I mean. But, of course, salt is also a preservative. It ability to hold at bay the forces of decay is well known to anyone familiar with jerky or old fashioned smoked meats. Salt and light. Preserving, enhancing, revealing, delighting. Do these qualities describe you?
