Even doing one or two simple things now could help save you time and money. Preparation now can also help you stay healthy and avoid becoming unwell. The Get Ready for Winter webpage provides links to specific information and advice from government departments and charities to help you as the weather turns colder Met Office Pages: Public Health information is included at: The Milton Keynes Council Pages are found at: Santa Claus is coming to town! Watch out for Santa s sleigh which will tour the village On Saturday, 8 th Santa will visit Bow Brickhill on his sleigh accompanied by his `Helpers Starting in Station Road then on to Greenways, Downs View, Rushmere Close, Edwin Close, Parkway and Church Road from 2:00pm 5:00pm Then visit him in his grotto at 74A Station Road He has promised to be there to meet the children Advent: The word is derived from the Latin: Adventus meaning arrival. It is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas the coming of Jesus. It is the New Year of the Christian Church and of the Church season that leads onto Christmas. Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to 30th November and lasts until Christmas Eve. Advent began in the 5th century when it took the form of a 6-week fast leading to Christmas. During the 6th century advent was reduced to its current length and later fasting was dropped. During the Advent, Clergy typically wear purple or royal blue vestments, and many churches also include an advent wreath or rings. 12

5 MAINTENANCE OF THE NEW GRAVEYARD Keeping the grass cut and the graveyard tidy on a tiny budget has been a huge challenge this year! The wet and mild weather has meant that the grass has grown at an astronomical rate. Each cut costs 80, which is reasonable when you consider how difficult it is to manoeuvre round the gravestones. We have enough money in reserve for one more cut plus a tidy up of leaves before the winter descends upon us. The compost and litter bins have worked well, thank you to everyone who has used them. We try and empty them frequently. You may have noticed that, with a lot of help from ASTRA, we have put some additional gravel on the steps to try and keep the weeds at bay and the area looking tidy. We are indebted to his Grace the Duke of Bedford who is generously donating an additional piece of land for an extension to the graveyard. The maintenance of the graveyard is paid for via voluntary contributions, any amount is gratefully received and we do our very best to make limited resources stretch as far as is possible. If you would like to contribute towards the 2013 program please could you send your donation to 33 Church Road, Bow Brickhill either in the form of cash or a cheque made payable to All Saints Church Bow Brickhill. Thanking you in anticipation CHANGES MK Brenda Goodger and Mary Preen I would like to introduce our company Changes MK. We are a community interest organisation that is here to serve the Milton Keynes community. We have currently launched a back into work program with Milton Keynes job plus, where we help train individuals back into employment. We would be grateful if, when you come across members of the public who are looking for employment, you direct them to our organisation. Please note that this service is free and so we desperately need your support in promoting our work. If you require anymore information please do not hesitate to visit our company website or contact our company Tel No or our company contact address: Changes MK Centric MK Foxhunter Drive Linford Wood MK14 6GE CAROL SERVICE Our annual carol service is in the Church on Sunday 16 th at 3.00pm. The afternoon continued in a very lively way with our quiz and raffle, before closing at 3.00pm. Our next meeting will be at the Wheatsheaf where we shall be enjoying our Christmas lunch, scheduled for 1.00pm on 4th On Tuesday 1st January at 1.00 pm we shall be back at the Pavilion, weather permitting, ready to welcome the New Year with a lunch, quiz, raffle and no doubt a great deal to talk about! We're terribly grateful to those of you who have volunteered - thanks so much. But we still need more help. Please, if you haven't responded yet and have a few hours to spare each month, do let us know to: bowbrickhillchurch@gmail.com "New Rainbow Unit in the Village? It has been suggested that there is potential for a Rainbow Unit to be opened in the village for girls between 5 and 7 years old. This could be held in the Church Hall on a Wednesday between 5 and 6 pm immediately before Brownies What we need now is leaders and, of course, girls who may be interested in coming along! Please contact Sally Pepper Tel or Sally Robinson Tel if you would be prepared to help, have a daughter who would like to attend or would just like further information. ASTRA Archaeologist Wanted - Church Grounds, Bow Brickhill ASTRA may require archaeological supervision during construction works in the graveyard to All Saints Church, Bow Brickhill, MILTON KEYNES in early Whilst the position is purely voluntary reasonable disbursements will be met. A local professional with the required skills and experience is called for to work with the ASTRA team and contractor over a very short construction period (perhaps a couple of days). In the first instance call Alan Preen (Chairman of ASTRA) on or alan.preen@electric-help.co.uk. Thank you : Alan Preen TELEPHONE CONTACT DETAILS FOR THAMES VALLEY POLICE On 14 November 2011, Thames Valley Police went live with 101, the new national single non-emergency number, which replaced the 0845 number. Both numbers have run side by side for the last year, and now 70 per cent of non-emergency calls to Thames Valley Police come from the 101 number. The 0845 number will be switched off on A recorded message will tell callers who ring the old non-emergency number to re-dial is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Calls to 101 (from both landlines and mobile networks) cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day the call is made, or the duration of the call. Everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters can be assured of equal access whether they are on a pay-as-you-go mobile or a home landline. The routing is based on the same system as 999 calls, which link a caller's dialing code to the police force that covers that geographic area. Calls from a landline are routed to the nearest police force that covers the area's dialing code. If the caller is using a mobile, the call is routed using the location of the mast that the phone is transmitting from. Supt Howard Stone, Head of the Control Room and Enquiry Department, said: "The introduction of the 101 number in the Thames Valley a year ago has proved very successful, with over 70 per cent of all calls coming in via the 101 number. "This national scheme to introduce an easy to remember number to contact police anywhere in the country means callers do not have to spend time searching for the number of their local force, and the number of 999 calls have not risen since the change, meaning people are aware of the new 101 number to call in a non-emergency situation and are not misusing the emergency lines to contact us." 4 11

7 Bow Brickhill History Society Please note that there will be no meeting in January the next meeting will be Wednesday 6 th February in the Wheatsheaf YOUTH CLUB Bow Brickhill E-Group There is a village e-group which operates using Yahoo! Groups. It s used for Neighbourhood Watch messages, village news and general discussion and has nearly 100 members. However some people aren t receiving messages any longer because they ve changed their addresses or they haven t set up their normal to receive posts. If you d like to become a member or wish to renew your membership, please Sue Malleson - sue@bowbrickhill.com. Congratulations to members of the Youth Club who attended the night hike on 15 November. After setting off from the Church Hall our group of 24 members (plus several adult helpers) criss-crossed through the woods and made it back for well earned hot refreshments. There is nothing like a group walk through autumnal woods on a dull, cloudy night without moonshine to raise the spirits and to give everyone, young and old, an experience of seeing the landscape of the local hills transformed into a dark mass. Fortunately we had some torches with us. It was a bit wet underfoot, but feedback shows that it was an enjoyable night out. The next Youth Club meeting is at the Pavilion on 6th The following meeting will be the Christmas outing on 20th to be held at the Leisure Plaza Milton Keynes (prior booking is required) Community Car Raffle and the Youth Club Bow Brickhill Youth Club has teamed up with Milton Keynes Community Foundation to offer tickets for the Community Car Raffle.
