5 BAH HUMBUG! Mr Ebenzer Scrooge has presided over the Bah Humbug auctions for several years and has given us plenty of merriment. On the 27th January villagers turned out in good numbers to enjoy another such occasion. This year he introduced a new apprentice, young Luke Scratchit - clearly someone we would call these days an 'unpaid intern' - who had to operate in the dim lighting provided by two candles in an almost unheated hall where a single smouldering log added to the evening s entertainment. A cool and smokey prospect, but everyone there huddled round the candles enjoyed the night. You never know what will come up at Bah Humbug. Boxes of chocolates, a Republican Party mug of Donald Trump, vases and knick-knacks, a sat-nav system (thank goodness young Scratchit was able to explain that one to Mr Scrooge) and collector s items such as a book of stunning photos of Formula 1 star Max Verstappen, donated by Red Bull Racing. All that was missing was a spare Christmas Pudding to auction off, maybe there will be one next year. All proceeds went to ASTRA for the Church Hall re-build project. A fantastic sum of 360 was raised on the night and in following days this increased to a total of 678 through donations by people who were unable to attend the event itself and from other generous contributions. ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING March 15 th at 7.45pm All Saints Church Annual Meeting will be held in the church hall on Thursday March 15th at 7.45pm and everyone from the parish is welcome to come along and hear about the work of the church council over the last year. 6 Are you aged 9-14? Then why not join the. BOW BRICKHILL YOUTH CLUB Rural crime update from Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Ross Reports of rural crime in the Thames Valley have increased by five percent between October 2016 and September st & 3rd Thursdays of each month 6.30 p.m. at the Pavilion : Cost 2 per child I would like to reassure members of our rural communities of my commitment to investigating reports of rural crime. We rely on information from our local communities and take such reports very seriously. Incidents are robustly investigated by our local policing teams who have dedicated Rural Crime and Wildlife Officers based across the Thames Valley. ASTRA 500 Club The results of the January draw : 1st prize: 2nd prize: 3rd prize: Sally Robinson Louise Tomlin Sue Malleson ticket number 12 ticket number 39 ticket number Rural crime can take many different forms including burglary, robbery, theft, criminal damage, fly tipping, poaching and hare coursing. We are continuing to work with local residents, businesses and partners to raise awareness of crime prevention techniques while developing problem solving solutions to tackle rural crime. There are often fewer witnesses to rural crimes and greater opportunities for criminals to target isolated properties and businesses. The impact of these crimes can also be greater, with people feeling more vulnerable due to their remote location. Andrea Spurdle : 500 Club Manager The draw is held in The Wheatsheaf on the last Thursday of every month - do come along and support Andrea Bow Brickhill W.I. You can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of rural crime by taking a few simple steps including: Here are a few photos of the WI Show the Love Climate Change Coalition campaign that was carried out around the village by members to celebrate Valentine s Day on February 14th. Keeping the boundaries of your land and property well-maintained and secure Fitting strong locks to sheds, garages and outbuildings Checking security equipment regularly to ensure it is working properly Locking equipment away in a secure building when it s not in use Security marking your tools and equipment For more crime prevention advice, and to see details of your local Rural Crime Officers, visit the Rural Crime page on the Thames Valley Police website at: protecting-your-business/rural-crime/ If you become a victim of rural crime or suspect that a crime has taken place, you should always report it to police by calling the non-emergency number, 101. If an incident is in progress, or there is an immediate threat to life, you should call 999. W.I. received a lot of likes from villagers on social media and one lady tweeted a photo that the Coalition then re-tweeted to their 23,000+ followers. I think this could have put B.B. W.I. on the global map! The March meeting is on 22nd March and is Keep Fit with Paula - fitness at all levels, including seated. Everyone is very welcome to attend and join in the evening s activities in the pavilion in Rushmere Close at 7.30 p.m.. For more information just Julia Paine: <kevinpaine1280@gmail.com> You can receive the latest rural crime news from Thames Valley Police and their partners directly to your phone or inbox by signing up to CountryWatch at:

7 Bow Brickhill History Society 20 people braved a wintry night to hear an absolutely fascinating talk on Medieval Dunstable on February 7th by the very enthusiastic and accomplished speaker Jean Yates. Most of us showed up thinking what has this got to do with Bow Brickhill? Well actually, far more that you can possibly imagine. The links to and the control Dunstable Priory had on, not just, Bow Brickhill, but also Great Brickhill and Shenley are incredible. The history group are planning a site visit to what is left of the priory later this year guided by the same speaker. Please contact BBHS if you would like to join us. and Snippets from the Petty Sessions Registers: 2 Jul 1891 Informant/ Complainant George Knight; defendants John Byrne, Walter Marsh, Harry Gilbey, John McGuirk, Dominick Owen; nature of offence: vagrancy: lodging in a shed without any visible means of subsistence, Bow Brickhill 1 Jul 1891; fine Byrne, Marsh,Gilbey & McGuirk committed for 14 days HL [hard labour] to HC [House of Correction] and Dominick Owen for 1 day to Police Station 23 March 1893 Informant/ Complainant George Cox; defendants William and Ernest Shepherd; nature of offence: wilful damage, Bow Brickhill, 31 Jan. 1893; fine 10s 0d, in default to be committed for 7 days each. Dress code: wear something green Hi All - over the weekend I came across a crime story where people give their address away at the Pharmacy and other locations. The thieves would stand around the counter at the Pharmacy. Before the medication is handed over, the address is normally asked for. The thief would then contact an accomplice to give them the address details. It is very probable that the address would be empty if someone is collecting medication. It is not certain how many people were robbed in this way. The elderly were the main targets. Be alert To prevent this happening to you, when asked for your address, please just state the road and never give your house number. Regards Mal McGar 7 8
