1 The Conservation Trust for St Laurence, Ludlow Charity No LUDLOW CONSERVATION WEEKEND EXCEEDS 8,500.00! St Laurence s Church once again echoed to the sound of chisels on stones when 21 stonemasons from as far afield as Trondheim Cathedral in Norway to Winchester Cathedral in Wessex descended on Ludlow to take part in the Stone Carving Festival, one of the events within the Ludlow Conservation Weekend. The Flower Festival and Wedding Dress Display transformed the already magnificent aisle and chancels; and Church Green buzzed with visitors buying plants, watching craft demonstrations, or delighting in the beauty of the Paved Garden. The Weekend raised over 8,500! Trustees organised the event to raise money to restore the stonework and monuments in the church, and are delighted with the result! Centuries ago, the Church and Town worked very closely together, said Trust Chairman, Bill Lloyd-Kitchen. We would like to express our gratitude to the many, many Ludlow organisations and businesses which supported us, by financial donations, ns, services or loan of equipment. There are too many to mention, but without them, we could not have staged the event. Other highlights of the weekend included illustrated talks, historical walks and guided tours of St Laurence s. The Mayor s Service was arranged to co-incide with the Weekend, emphasising the essential relationship between church and town. The Conservation Trust exists to raise money to conserve and maintain our magnificent church, sometimes called The Cathedral of the Marches, said Bill. Although the weekend was an outstanding success, we hope it will also result in more people wishing to become Palmers, that is, financially supporting the Trust by committing to regular donations. 2 2011 CALENDAR OF EVENTS MAKE A DATE IN YOUR DIARY NOW TO SUPPORT THESE EVENTS MMMMM Following in David s Footsteps : Church Walks, led by Trustee Andrew Pike. Culmington Church, Wednesday June 15 Leintwardine Church, Wednesday June 22 Many people will remember with great fondness the series of Church or Town Walks, led by the late Dr David Lloyd, MBE. David was Chairman of the Conservation Trust for St Laurence for several years, and Trustee Andrew Pike, Hereford Diocesan Archaeological Adviser, and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, will follow in David s footsteps and lead two such walks this month. The first walk will be in Culmington on Wednesday 15 June. Starting at 6.00 pm, participants will enjoy a leisurely 2.5 mile walk, a visit to the parish church, the motte and bailey castle, and an expert historical commentary by Andrew! The walk concludes with coffee and biscuits at Culmington Church. Meet Andrew at Culmington Church at 5.45 pm (parking is available at the village hall), and pay on the day. Each walk costs 3 or 5.00 for both. The second walk is at Leintwardine on Wednesday 22 June. Walkers should gather at Leintwardine Church at 5.45 pm (parking in Leintwardine is on-road and car-sharing is encouraged). This walk concludes with a fish and chip supper at The Sun : all suppers must be pre-booked and orders will be taken at the start of the walk. David s walks were attended and enjoyed by so many people, said Trustee, Rosemary Wood. Andrew s knowledge of local churches is immense: we are sure David would have approved! Street Collection in aid of the Conservation Trust Saturday 18 June Dr Jen Davies has again agreed to organise a Street Collection for the Conservation Trust. Last year resulted in a wonderful total of , and we hope to raise even this month. Volunteers needed! Contact Jen at jendavies_ludlow@yahoo.co.uk, or phone or CHANGE OF DATE FOR THE CONSERVATION TRUST ANNUAL MEETING WAS Thursday 30 June CHANGED TO 6.30 pm WEDNESDAY 13 JULY St Laurence s Church, Ludlow Everyone is invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Conservation Trust, when Chairman, Bill Lloyd-Kitchen will outline last year s achievements and next year s plans. The Trustees have pleasure in inviting Palmers and supporters to join them afterwards for a complimentary glass of wine in the church. The Annual Meeting will be followed by: Siluria: the story of a lost ocean An illustrated talk by Michael Rosenbaum, Emeritus Professor of Engineering Geology 7.30 Wednesday 13 July, St Laurence s Church, Ludlow This talk will illustrate the importance of the Silurian to the fabric of St Laurence s: built with and upon rocks deposited some 420 million years ago, a time when an ocean to the west was being destroyed, life was beginning to emerge from the sea onto land, and Ludlow was south of the Equator! Michael will also explain why geoscientists from 20 countries across the world have assembled in Ludlow this week to discuss issues that affect our understanding not only of local geology but across the planet, and the evidence within these rocks of climate change during one of the least stable episodes of Earth history the Silurian seas were full of life, but not the land, so providing a valuable analogy for the present day but without the factors associated with Man.
