3 BOW BRICKHILL CLUB JULY AUGUST MEETINGS The club meeting on Tuesday July 6th was replaced by our annual summer outing. This year, a shorter journey than usual took us to the Woburn Safari Park where, after picking up our guide we embarked upon a tour that for animal lovers was a "Dream come true". From the basking lions to the mischievous monkeys this was an unforgettable afternoon. All followed by tea and biscuits before our return home. Our meeting on August 3rd was very well attended and everyone kept busy with our competitions. Our first quiz "Who, What and Where?" involved the identification of twenty photographs of well-known and not so well-known personalities, was won by Rosemary Guess`s team. This was followed by our second quiz "Name Dropping", won by Pat Parker. Raffle drawn and tea consumed, we soon came to the end of our afternoon`s entertainment. The next meeting of the club will be in the Pavilion at 2.00pm on Tuesday September 7th, when our speaker will be a representative from the United Sustainable Energy Agency. We look forward to a very informative and interesting afternoon. NEW SCANNER AND PRINTER The Parish Council has recently purchased an A3 multi-use machine for use by village clubs. A small charge per copy will be made towards the cost of replacement ink cartridges: A3: 25p per copy A4: 15p per copy Contact Gill or Andy on candishtowers@gmail.com if you wish to use it. 14 3
4 WOMEN S INSTITUTE The meeting for August was open to all, and we welcomed visitors both from the village and from other local Womens Institutes, with a total of about 50 people attending. The speaker was Roger Crews, who gave a very interesting talk entitled Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway Trust: a waterway park for all. This new canal is the first to be built for 200 years; it was started in 2009 and will probably take 10 years to finish. It will be 26km long, and will link Bedford to Milton Keynes. This will mean that for the first time the eastern waterways, right across from the Wash, will connect to the network of canals through the spine of England, and across to the Bristol Channel. The new waterway will benefit not only boat-owners, but also walkers, cyclists and anglers, and will boost the local economy in the form of jobs and tourist attractions. You can find out more on the website: The next meeting will be on Thursday 23rd September and will be on ribbon floral art. The competition letters will be `Q` and `R at The Three Locks Golf Club from 16 th September 2010 NEW Beginners classes will be held at the old Clubhouse on Thursdays 10.45am to 11.45am & 8pm to 9pm: 45 for a 6 week block of classes. Private 1:1 and small group sessions are also available Places are limited so please book early, it is not possible to come along on the day without pre-booking. To find out more or to book your place please contact Louisa on louisa.pilates@googl .com or on You will need to complete and return an enrolment form before coming to class, this is for your safety and to ensure that any individual health needs can be catered for during the class. 5 YOU GOTTA BE HAVIN A LARP! If you go down to the woods today - well actually at a weekend - you probably won't meet bears but you might meet a lady with horns or some other curiously dressed character. Bow Brickhill woods is a favourite venue for a group of people who engage in live action roleplay. Our local incarnation of this leisure activity is Pathfinder Live Action Roleplay which you'll find at The group has been running for ten years and is a small non-profit, non-commercial group based in North Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire which runs regular weekend adventures from mid-spring right through to early autumn. There is a yearly camp-out called "The Overnighter" allowing longer and more ambitious adventures. Some members even play in the winter. So if you should encounter a curiously attired person while walking your dog, don't worry, they're only having a LARP. AN AMERICAN BOW BRICKHILL Bow Brickhill Stables offers a superb full-care boarding facility with a wide range of amenities in a safe and friendly low-key atmosphere the web site says. However these stables are not in this village but situated in Milford, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, USA. When Alsmeer Farm in Milford was bought by new owners last December, they decided to name their equestrian business after our village in acknowledgement of the wonderful rides they d had in our woods. Bow Brickhill Stables web site - if you want to check it out - even features a picture of our village sign with the hill in the background. NEW LINE DANCE CLASS FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS MONDAY 13 TH SEPTEMBER 2010 AT 7.00PM THE PAVILION COME ALONG AND GIVE IT A GO! FIRST WEEK FREE For more information phone Jan on KILIMANJARO CLIMB FOR CHRISTEL Over the past few months you may have seen a tall girl with a backpack walking up and down the hill on Church Road. This is Sonya Kempster, a Bow Brickhill resident who has set herself the challenge of a lifetime. In February of 2009, Sonya s husband, Grant, lost his mother to Cancer within two months of an unexpected diagnosis. Understandably, this changed their world. A year on and Sonya has decided to Climb for Christel as she endeavors to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in October in memory of her mother-in-law and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. If you would like to support this very worthwhile charity, donations (however small) can be made via Kempster or in a collection box which is held at Magnolia Cottage (2a), Church Road. COPY DEADLINE - OCTOBER We welcome your news and events. Please deliver contributions by 20th September 2010 to: Gill Cannell - bowbrickhillpavilion@gmail.com 12 5

7 HARVEST FESTIVAL WEEKEND HARVEST SERVICE This year we will be holding an informal "cafe-style" harvest service in the Church Hall at 11am on Sunday 12th September, followed by a bring and share lunch. We hope that the new disabled access at the hall will enable more people to join us. It would help if you could let Rosemary Clarke ( , rosemary.clarke@googl .com) know that you plan to join us and what kind of contribution you would like to bring for the meal. However, everyone is welcome, so don't hesitate to come on the day even if you haven't indicated your attendance ahead of time. If you would struggle to bring some food, please don't let that prevent you from coming. HARVEST PRODUCE AUCTION Produce donated for the Harvest service will be sold at our Harvest Auction to be held by kind permission of Chris and Sue on Monday 13 th September in the Wheatsheaf at 8.00pm Donations of produce can be taken to Rosemary in the Church Hall on Saturday 11 th, to Stuart at Driveside or to the Wheatsheaf from Monday 13 th pm. Come along and join in this entertaining evening and make a bid! GROWING DISCIPLES A couple of years ago John Waller and Rosemary Clarke ran a yearlong, monthly course on leadership within a Christian context - for people who might wish to develop skills that could be used in church, at work or in the community. The course is being offered again, beginning this autumn. Most sessions will be on Wednesday evenings, but the first meeting, in October, will be on Saturday 9th from , and the February meeting will also be on a Saturday. This time we are opening up the opportunity for people across our deanery so there will be an opportunity to meet new people too. If you would like to know more, please contact Rosemary ( ). We will need to know if you plan to join us by mid September. HISTORIC CHURCHES BIKE RIDE SEPTEMBER 11 th WANTED cyclists, walkers or horse riders to do this sponsored ride for the restoration of our church. You do not need to give up your whole day but it will be very enjoyable; some of the old and new churches in this area are very interesting. Helpers also needed to look after the church during the day. The more there are, the easier it is - a shorter time at the church and more people to natter to while you are there. We need sponsors too for the riders so please contact someone who is riding, or me. Come on, let s get this Church Restoration fund started, we need in excess of 20,000. More information from: Sally Pepper Or ALL SAINTS LUNCH CLUB Sunday September 26th 12.15pm for 12.30pm the Church hall. All Saints Lunch club was formed in September 2004 and aims to provide a good lunch with good company and fellowship in a friendly atmosphere. All are welcome and transport is available. This will be the 6 th Anniversary of the lunch club so we hope to have as many guests as possible to make it a special occasion. If you would like any further information or to book in please contact Stuart and Kay on
