Engage Rotary, Change Lives In an era when electronic communication seems to be everywhere, the role of printed magazines is still important to our organization, but we must be open to new formats to get the word out. This month, I encourage you to explore The Rotarian Magazine s new digital experience. Dong Kurn Lee, Chair, Rotary International Foundation Board of Trustees. District Conference in ABQ to focus on fun! When was the last time you attended a District Rotary Conference? Was it educational? Was it entertaining? Was it fun? District 5520 Governor Kit Turpen and his conference co-chairs Donette Wagner and Barbara LaGree want to make sure the upcoming District Conference in Albuquerque is, indeed, fun. For the first time, all afternoon sessions will not have break-out business sessions, but instead will feature golf, museum behind the scenes tours, ABQ Uptown shopping, a trolley tour, wine tasting and fly-fishing classes. So register today and have fun May 1-4. All-Rotary luncheon set for Friday, May 2 All Rotary clubs in New Mexico and El Paso will be gathering for a District 5520-wide Changing Lives luncheon meeting on Friday, May 2, which will replace clubs regular meeting dates during the week of April 28. The luncheon meeting will take place at Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town on Rio Grande Boulevard as part of the annual District 5520 Conference. For Del Norte Rotarians, it means no meeting on April 30. Attendance for this special luncheon will be counted as a regular meeting, said Club President Gene Gaik. Rotary Magazine now online Whether on a computer, tablet or smartphone, Rotarians and non- Rotarians can now access The Rotarian Magazine directly at TheRotarianMagazine.com without having to hunt for it on the Rotary website.
3 Del Norte Rotary NorthWind April 9, 2014 Page 3 Rotary business: Bottom-line stuff Dave Anderson in line to be Dist. Gov Long-time Rotary benefactor is named Governor-Nominee D el Norte Rotary Club benefactor Dave Anderson, whose blood runs a Rotary blue, has been chosen by a District 5520 Nominations Committee to be District Governor-Nominee for the coming fiscal year, which will put him in line to become the district governor for the 71 club two-state district for the term. This is a huge honor for a Rotarian who has served Rotary in so many ways, said Bobby Wallace, former district governor who headed up the nominations committee. This is also a huge commitment for Dave, but I can assure you, Dave is the man for such an awesome responsibility. Current District 5520 Governor Christopher Kit Turpen was present to offer his congratulations when the announcement was made at Del Norte s luncheon meeting at the Canyon Club on March 26. Dave stood with his wife (and also Del Norte member) Maureen Anderson, as well as their daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Scott Honsowetz. Maureen was presented with flowers from Donette Wagner. Dave spoke briefly to his fellow Del Norte Rotarians about the challenge ahead. Throughout this process, I will need all the support I can Dave Anderson get, he said. New Executive Secretary: Ed Hughes to succeed Sonia Torres Sonia Torres onia Torres, Del Norte Rotary Club s jack-of-all-trades Executive S Secretary for the past year and a half, has submitted her resignation due to an increased work load at her marketing firm. Club President Gene Gaik has announced that Ed Hughes, the club s public image director and editor of NorthWind, will succeed Sonia effective May 1. Ed will continue to serve as the editor of NorthWind. Ed joined Del Norte Rotary in 2012 after serving five years with the Loveland (Colo.) Rotary Club and five years with Jefferson City West club in Missouri, where he also served as club secretary. Sonia previously served as the club s Public Image director. 4 Del Norte Rotary NorthWind April 9, 2014 Page 4 Luncheon Notes: Meetings of March 26 and April 2 Blowin in the (North) Wind... A breezy collection of luncheon bites from NorthWind Editor Eddie S. Hughes. March 26, 2014 R andom note-taking while wondering how they know if deer can read those yellow Deer Crossing signs. Congrats to all who remembered that we changed venues for this meeting at Four Hills Country Club oops, make that The Canyon Club. Among those remembering their volunteer assignments: Kim Helm, greeter; Clarence Hughes, who led the Pledge of Allegiance; Marc Powell, who gave the invocation; and Dan Regan who gave a page full of thoughts of the day. Also congratulations to members for remembering the Four Way Test without a 4-Way Test banner hanging from the podium. Ruth Ronan didn t have her usual keyboard to play God Bless America, but she had a grand piano that was oh so grand! Among those standing at attention during Ruth s concerto: Michael MacDonald s trusty companion, Chance. Baby news: Scott and Megan Honsowetz are expecting their second child. John Freeman said the club s next work day at the New Mexico Boys & Girls Ranch will be Saturday, May 17. Bobby Wallace, on the Ranches board, promised he would be there this time! Steve Becker reported that Kathie Williams is back home recovering from her second hip replacement. Therapy is expected to last three weeks. He quoted Kathie as saying I could feel the spirit of Rotary all around me. Thanks for all the prayers and cards. April 2, 2014 M ore random jottings, while wondering if computers are the next best thing to sliced bread, what was the best thing before sliced bread? Yours truly helped Executive Secretary Sonia Torres set up before everyone arrived. I would say Sonia is the unsung hero of Del Norte Rotary! Clarence Hughes served as greeter, John Wright filled in for Carol Wright to give the Pledge of Allegiance, and Art Humphries gave the invocation. Ruth Ronan was back at her familiar keyboard to lead Rotarians in singing My Country Tis of Thee. Back as Sergeant-at- Arms was ever-cunning Chuck Brown, who had fun picking on individuals while picking out interesting events in history that occurred on April 2. Examples: In 1513 on that date, Florida was discovered. He asked Dale Alverson what Frank Bird was doing that day. He wasn t born, replied Dale. Wrong, said Sarge. He was seen surfing on the coastline. More: In 1800, Beethoven performed his First Symphony for the first time. Asked what Ruth Ronan was doing, Caroline Chamblin replied: I not going there. And ol Sarge replied, Wrong, Ruth was named piano teacher of the year in Vienna. The best reply for the day came from Richard Follingstad when asked what Andy Anderson was doing the day the strongest wind gust in history (250 mph) hit Topeka, Kansas in 1958: I don t know, Richard replied, but I know he ended up in El Paso, Texas. For the record: Guests of Rotarians and visiting Rotarians March 26: Guest of Rotarian: Michaela Oldani (guest of Dale Alverson); Megan Honsowetz (Scott Honsowetz); and Brian Bingham (Terry Boulanger). Club Guest: Christopher Kit Turpen, District 5520 Governor (program). Visiting Rotarian: Kit Turpin (Del Sol Club). April 2: Guests of Rotarians: Glenn Burgmeier (guest of Andy Anderson), and Brian Bingham (Terry Boulanger). Club Guests: None. Visiting Rotarians: None.
5 Del Norte Rotary NorthWind April 9, 2014 Page 5 Inside Rotary: What s going on in Del Norte land Million Dollar Dinner set for June 28 Rotary reaches out to those who can leave a legacy for RI W hen you think about Rotary legacy, most Rotarians will think it means Rotary s 25-year non-stop effort to eradicate the dreaded disease of polio from children around the world which now seems to be on the verge of becoming a reality. And yet, Rotary s outreach into local communities and the world is much more than polio eradication. It reaches out into solving some of the world s most severe needs water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, peace and conflict resolution. And yet, for all of its doing good in the world, which was the basis for the founding of Rotary International Foundation in 1917, the amount of money it distributes doesn t even rank it in the top 100 giving foundations in the U.S. Thus, there is a new effort on the part of Rotary to encourage Rotarians to be a part of its legacy by being a major donor or benefactor to RI, to help build up its endowment fund from which its proceeds can indeed have a major impact on doing good. Carol Rickert-Asbury Two Million Dollar Dinner events are being Dist. Gov. Kit Turpen scheduled by Rotary District 5520 one in Albuquerque on June 28, and one in El Paso two nights later in order to reach every Rotarian in its vast district covering all of New Mexico and a part of West Texas. Del Norte Rotary s Carol Rickert-Asbury has been asked by District Gov. Kit Turpen to head up the Million Dollar Dinner in Albuquerque at the Albuquerque Country Club. Each dinner has as a goal to raise $1 million in contributions or pledges, seeking Rotarians who will give $10,000 either as a single donation or as a pledge, or as a bequeath from a Rotarian s estate upon his or her death. Bill Gates is a proud Rotarian himself, said Gov. Turpen, but he said our only drawback is we don t think big enough. We need to think bigger. We need to think what we can do to leave a legacy in the name of Rotary. Stay tuned. You will be hearing from Carol and others very soon. #*%*# computers!! ech-savvy Terry Boulanger, chief operating officer T of New Mexico TechNet, Inc., says love your computer and it will love you back. But that s only if you load it up with anti-virus software that really keeps hackers out, or clean-up software that can free up memory space when old stuff doesn t really disappear in the recycle bin. The greatest security you have is your power switch, he said in a talk to fellow Del Norte Rotarians April 2. If you just turn it off at night, you will keep a lot of bad stuff from infiltrating your computer.
6 Del Norte Rotary NorthWind April 9, 2014 Page 6 Candid Camera: What if they said that? As an old Sergeant-at-Arms who knows better, I can t believe I said that! Trying to sell a house is tough these days, but not as tough as old Sergeants-at-Arms coming back. With the tax deadline approaching, I am looking forward to doing my taxes with eyes closed! Believe me when I tell you that the cost of funerals is not the result of an increase in the cost of living! I wonder which is worse having a baby on April Fool s Day, or the day after Christmas? If white wine goes with baked fish, would it make sense that white grapes would go best with sushi?
