For some, fun means a power walk on the beach no matter the weather, and for others it means finding bargains at the Outlet Mall. Quiet time with a book or playing board games are also fun options. FROM THE COUNCIL CHAIR WHAT WOULD YOU NEED IF YOU WERE A REFUGEE WITH NOTHING TO KEEP HOUSE? We have begun a new ministry of partnering with the community.

Henry Catholic Church, along with a handful of others, have formed the Refugee and Immigrant Hospitality Organization with the goal of providing a gathering space for refugees, where they could hang

3 FROM THE COUNCIL CHAIR WHAT WOULD YOU NEED IF YOU WERE A REFUGEE WITH NOTHING TO KEEP HOUSE? We have begun a new ministry of partnering with the community. Pastor John Baskaron of the Arabic Christian Church and Nancy Molina of St. Henry Catholic Church, along with a handful of others, have formed the Refugee and Immigrant Hospitality Organization with the goal of providing a gathering space for refugees, where they could hang out, have coffee, receive assistance with job searches, interpreting letters from the government, etc., and be referred to services if needed. The group is currently looking at spaces, and have begun fundraising. In addition to working on this ambitious project they need a storage space for household items that they have collected for refugees who move into the Gresham area. GUMC has provided that space in our basement storage area. We can help by collecting household items. Immediately on arriving in Gresham refugee families need pots and pans, dishes, silverware and kitchen utensils. Rice cookers are much loved by refugees from many countries. Also think of cleaning supplies, toiletries, linens and furniture items. If you have large items to be picked up, call the church office. Leave your donated items in the west hallway and they will be moved to the basement storage. WORSHIP NOTES: TWO WORSHIP SERVICES Starting September 11th, we will be going back to two worship services. 9:00am Celebration Service 11:00am Traditional Service SUNDAY SCHOOL KICKOFF September 11th, Room 108 Hannah Banana, Ice Cream, and Fun SOLVE-IT SATURDAY "Solve-It Saturday" is a fellowship opportunity for men. It includes breakfast and a short devotional. Those that feel so inclined and able are invited to stick around and do a few tasks around the church and grounds that have been left for our special touch. The latter part is strictly optional. Join us on Saturday, October 1st at 8:00 am. Any questions or feedback can be directed to Doug Moore or Robert Potter.

5 MISSION MATTERS If you wish to contribute school supplies, you mat put them in a SnowCap barrel in the hallway. On July 25th, it was our pleasure, along with Kathy Gepsen, Judie and Tom Kissinger to serve a meal to nine children and five adults. Four of the children had recently arrived from Vietnam and knew no English except thank you, which they used literally. All were a very congenial group and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening with them. We served ice cream in celebration of Larry s birthday. What a way to spend your birthday at 90 years! -Mary Kissinger BREWS AND BIBLE Brews and Bible will be meeting at Mojave Restaurant on September 8th and 22nd. 77 NE 4th Street, Gresham, OR. Come from 6:00-7:30 pm and join us for conversation! THE GOSPEL OF LUKE DISCIPLE CLASS What does it mean to be a disciple in 2017? How do we recognize God's presence in our lives? These are two of the questions that will be part of the fall Discipleship group's time together. A new group is forming in the early weeks of September. Meetings will begin during the week of September 18. You will hear more about this on the first Sundays of September. Following the service September 11th you will have a chance to sign up for this new Discipleship group led by Laurel Brown and Adam Jenkins.

6 UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWS SPECIAL EVENT: COMING SOON TO GRESHAM UMC: Gresham United Methodist Women are hosting the Columbia District UMW Annual Fall Meeting - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1ST! Featuring PAUL JEFFREY, Photo journalist for Response magazine Registration: 9:30 am. (no charge!) Salad Lunch Paul Jeffrey presentation: 1:00 pm Everyone UMW members, Circle members, women of the church, and men are invited to come hear Paul as he tells about his journeys around the world to photograph the people and places where ministries of the Church and United Methodist Women are giving people new life and hope! This is a unique opportunity to both HEAR and SEE how God s love for all people is being expressed in places we could never go ourselves! MARK YOUR OCTOBER CALENDAR! ARE YOU INTERESTED? PLAN NOW TO ATTEND! In May the UMW sponsored a survey to see what activities the women of the church might be interested in. Ten women responded to say they would be interested in forming a group of women who meet together periodically to participate in a hands-on mission project. Such mission-oriented projects might include helping with meal preparation for the Family Shelter, cleaning toys in the preschool, helping with mailings from the church office, sending notes/cards or visiting church shut-ins, collecting items for refugees the list goes on and on! The women who participate in these activities can decide for themselves what projects they would like to take on! Most of these projects do not happen on a regular schedule, so there will be notice of the project in advance of the group gathering. This kind of group requires some flexibility on the part of the participants, BUT it also requires dedication and commitment to participating. So the question is: ARE YOU INTERESTED in being a part of this kind of women s group? You do not need to come to UMW meetings. You do not need to participate in every project. BUT you DO need to try to participate when you can as often as you can or the group cannot achieve its purpose. If you would like to be notified of mission projects as they come up, please speak to Susan Taylor, Roz Collins or Carol Potter. Carol is acting as the coordinator of this group by sending out the Call for Helping Hands when needed. PLEDGE TO MISSION Many, many thanks to all the women (and men!) who helped and all who chose to eat at the Salad Sunday event on July 31! A total of $618 was cleared and will be applied to our UMW Pledge to Mission of $2,400 for Not only did we make money for our financial support of mission, lots of good food and fellowship was enjoyed by about 75 people. If you made a monthly or quarterly pledge to support the mission work of United Methodist Women, you can pay on your pledge at any Circle or General UMW meeting. Our UMW treasurer sends 1/4 of our Pledge to the district treasurer every three months. Since expenses for mission work go on year-round, a constant flow of money helps agencies and programs achieve continuity in the services they offer to those who depend on them. Your Pledge to Mission is important to lots of women and children!

7 UMW NEWS CONTINUED MEETINGS IN SEPTEMBER SEPT. 2 - CHURCH WOMEN UNITED will meet at Faith United Methodist Church at 10:00 to celebrate Human Rights Day. After the business meeting and program, a pot-luck lunch will be enjoyed by all. An offering for Clackamus Women s Services will be taken. SEPT. 5 - KNIT ONE, CROCHET TOO will NOT meet on Monday, Sept. 5, because of the Labor Day holiday. SEPT. 6 - Monthly meetings for FELLOWSHIP CIRCLE will resume in September with the Tuesday 6th 10:00 meeting at the Church. If you have not been coming to a circle meeting, this would be a good time to start attending. Members of Fellowship Circle will joyously welcome you into their fellowship! SEPT SARAH CIRCLE will meet at 1:30 on Monday, Sept.12th to begin the fall season. Bring a pair of scissors if you plan to attend. Everyone is welcome to come be a part of creating a bulletin board for the Fall District meeting: One picture is worth a thousand words! SEPT The UMW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE will meet at 9:30. SEPT RETELL BOOK GROUP will meet at 10:00 at the Church to discuss How Coffee Saved My Life by Ellie Roscher. (And of course, you can enjoy a cup of coffee!) Books for future reading include: The Round House by Louise Erdrich for October; All the Light You Cannot See by Anthony Doerr for November; The Quiet Little Woman by Louise May Alcott for December. SEPT AT 10:00 THERE WILL BE A GENERAL U.M.W. MEETING the first of the fall season! Experiencing Blessings at the Table will be the title of the program. led by Roz Collins. WOMEN ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING PERSONAL ITEMS FOR THE NEW WOMEN S SHELTER SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN SEPTEMBER. These items can include shampoo and hair conditioners, skin and hand moisturizing lotions, deodorants, toothbrushes and tooth paste, sanitary pads and tampons, personal bars of soap, lip balm sticks, nail files, small hand mirrors, washcloths and towels. This will be an on-going project to support the homeless women who find themselves and their children needing to use the Human Solutions shelter at 162nd and Burnside. As concerned women, we cannot solve the personal and homeless problems of these women, but we can help them feel supported by providing items needed to care for and feel good about themselves!
