1 the S U M M E R MESSENGER DUNCANSVILLE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH Summer Saturday Service Time: 5:00 PM Sunday Service Times: 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:45 AM Summer Saturday Worship We listened to your requests for an evening worship. With the addition of Vicar Matthew, we are trying a trial worship time on Saturdays during the summer months of June, July and August at 5:00 PM. The rest is up to you. If you wish to see a regular Saturday worship service become reality, you will need to support the service by your attendance, by welcoming the stranger who enters, and by assisting Pastor or Vicar Matthew as we alternate weekends. The service will last approximately 45 minutes and include the Word and Sacrament (I will consecrate and reserve the elements of Holy Communion on Vicar Matthew s weekends). Save the Date! 3 THE MESSENGER SUMMER 2016 VICAR S MESSAGE Summer is in the air, finally. Usually that means it s time to slow down. But this is an unusual year for our family. Summer 2016 will be as busy as ever for our family and at church. Stewardship of the Body is coming along well and we are approaching the finish line. Approximately 20 individuals of the congregation have been exercising, improving their nutrition through weekly challenges and small changes in their diet, and growing spiritually through Scripture reflection. On June 11, we ll gather at the Duncansville park for the culmination. We ll do a 5k walk through Duncansville and celebrate our accomplishment with a picnic. All are welcome to come, walk, cheer, and eat some good food. I ll announce more details in church as we get closer. By the time you read this, we will have completed our second book study this time on The Rapture Exposed, by Barbara Rossing. It s been an eye-opening experience for so many in the discussions. I m grateful for the thoughtful conversations, observations and questions that have guided the discussion along the way it s my hope that this study gave participants an alternative, hope-filled, view of Revelation. June will be an especially full month going to Confirmation camp with Emma will be a real treat. And we ll be taking a much-needed vacation at the end of June to enjoy some time away for relaxation and rejuvenation. This will prepare us well as we approach the end of our internship year there is still so much to do. Which brings me to this final thought for the month God has more for you than being busy. That s true for all of us. Make time for God, not out of obligation, but so time can be enjoyed regardless of what you are doing. Vicar Matthew HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATUES TO BE HONORED On Sunday, June 12, we will honor our high school graduates including: Rachael Angermier (HAHS), Carly Craig (AAHS), Julianna Franco (HAHS) Sara Ritchey (HAHS) and Jacob Holsopple (HAHS). Congratulations and God s blessings as they continue to journey where God s spirit will lead them. If we have missed any graduating high school student, please contact the church office immediately.
4 THE MESSENGER SUMMER 2016 CHURCH HAPPENINGS VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Vacation Bible School will be held Monday, July 25 through Friday, July 29 here at Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church from 7 to 9 PM. Teachers, helpers (youth to adult), artists and welcome staff are needed to make our VBS a success. All volunteers will need to obtain child abuse clearance forms from the church office. INDOOR YARD AND FOOD SALE Saturday, August 13, :00 AM Church Social Hall Items for the yard sale may be dropped off at the church any time after August 1. If you need help with hauling, please contact Dale Holsopple at Benefits family and youth ministry. DELC COFFEE SHOP OPENS Join us in the Family Life Center for a time of refreshments and conversation. Jill Evans, who holds a master degree in addiction counseling, will be our moderator, and Susan Ritchey will oversee refreshments at the hospitality center. The coffee shop will be a place for good conversation around any number of subjects that impact many, but most especially younger adults. No subject will be off the table and conversations will be held in a respectful manner for all who attend. There will be opportunities for private conversations and private prayer as well. We will be working to secure some music to help create a casual vibe for the evenings. Please invite others to join us on the following dates: Saturday, June 25 at 6 PM / Saturday, July 30 at 6 PM / Saturday, August 27 at 6 PM. ORGAN LESSONS TO BE OFFERED A gift has been given to cover the cost of youth organ lessons. Any church youth in grades 7 through 12 who can sight read piano music, and is willing to practice and purchase organ shows and music may apply to the church office. Contact Dawn Morden at for more information and to schedule you summer lessons.
5 2 1 THE MESSENGER SUMMER 2016 PASTOR S MESSAGE With summer fast approaching, vacations of all types are being planned. Trips to the beach or camping, cities large and small, and national parks are just a few destination options available for those who have the time and resources. For some, vacation will come in the form of a week at home in order to start or finish a project that is long overdue. For still others, with no vacation time and no money, vacation away or at home is something to dream about with hopes of a better future. When making your vacation and holiday plans, I would be amiss if I didn t remind you that the ministry we share at Duncansville Evangelical Church (DELC), continues all year long including the months of June, July and August. With that said, please be at worship the Sundays you are in the area and when away, see what other congregations are doing. Remember too that the financial obligations of the congregation continue in your absence. Please continue to make your regular offerings and tithes when you will not be at worship. Along with your offering envelopes, you can now give securely online at duncansvillelutheran.com. It is vital for us as a growing congregation to finance for the present and future as we have now realized the blessing of Vicar Matthew s presence and as we welcome Vicar Amanda in August. Further, with plans for renovations to our first floor (old church section) currently underway, your gifts are vital to continue to maintain our facility for our current and future ministry needs. It s important to understand that getting away is very much a Jesus thing to do. When Jesus was busy with ministry, he often tried to get away to regroup, sometimes with his disciples and sometimes he would go it alone. As you make your preparations, the following may be helpful to understand: Vacations are a privilege and very much needed. If you are able, do not apologize for getting away, it s important. For those who cannot, find ways to create a sacred and restful spot at home inside or out where a relaxing glow of a candle or fire in a pit will bring light to the weariness of darkness. Sip a glass of wine or cup of tea or coffee and be grateful for the moment of rest and relaxation. Keep your Bible or devotional handy to allow God into those moments. Invite your closest family or friends to share in that special place of renewal. Maybe there is a special place within a short distance that can take you away from the reality of piled up dishes or laundry and the stack of bills waiting to be paid. In this area especially, we are blessed to have Canoe Creek and other locations that offer a shoreline free of charge, not to mention meadows and trees in which to have a picnic lunch and a jaunt away. For all you do in our shared ministry at DELC, please know how much you are appreciated. Thank you, +Pastor Jaime 5
