A native of Latrobe, PA, Kathy and her husband, Allen, with whom she recently celebrated her 36th wedding anniversary, reside in Hanover, PA. They have two grown children, six grandchildren and three cats. Kathy is a second-career intern having been previously employed as a real estate paralegal, legal secretary, and an executive assistant. In 202, the Hanover YWCA awarded her the Women Making a Difference award. She began her studies for ordained ministry at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in August 205. As a member of St. David s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover, PA, Kathy served on Church Council for -/2 terms including one year as Church Council Secretary. 2 2 3 THE MESSENGER SPRING 207 BLESSINGS TO HAITI Dr. Mike Satryan and Pastor Jaime volunteer in Haiti providing eye care to those in need In early March, Dr. Mike Satryan, Pastor Jaime and others from the optometry field traveled to Haiti to provide eye care for those in need. In 5 days, about,800 Haitians received eye care, something that is drastically lacking in their country. If you attended Sunday services on March 2th, you heard both Dr. Mike and Pastor Jaime speak about the profound impact this trip had on both of them. For Dr. Mike, it was his 6th trip. The Haitian people have next to nothing. For example, water must be obtained from a community well as there is no running water in their homes. Basic healthcare and hygiene is severely lacking. However, organizations like VOSH-PA, of which Dr. Mike is a member, join together to provide supplies and volunteer their time to provide this vital service to the Haitian people. So, to support this organization, DELC has chosen VOSH for our May/June benevolence. We hope all members will consider giving to this wonderful organization! SEEKING ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Now accepting resumes for our part-time Administrative Assistant. Duties will include document development, fiscal responsibilities including payroll, bill payment, handling of offerings/giving statements, etc. The applicant must be able to learn our computer software program, perform web page updates, push notifications on our App and other social media sites. 25 hours per week. Salary negotiated based on qualifications. 2

3 THE MESSENGER SPRING 207 PASTOR S MESSAGE Weathering Winter Storms to See the Birth of Spring Winter Storms can be both beautiful and destructive depending on the circumstances. To sit at home without travel or work plans affords us the opportunity to watch as Creation is painted in white. Hues of blue and gray sprinkled with sparkling glitter in drifted beauty appear magic prompting nostalgic memories to dance in our heads. Of course, on the other hand, if we have a meeting, an important appointment or the thought of missing church comes into play, the story is different. Beauty turns into nuisance and the thoughts of travel become a burden. Reports of school closings, delays and early dismissals have families scrambling to ensure quality care is available. Events are cancelled and being stuck means a shovel, snow blower, ice melt and the waiting for roads to clear becomes a reality. Winter also has a way of purging the old as powerful winds and the weight of frozen water down lifeless branches making way for new growth. The snow that is piled at the edge of my driveway covers and protects the spring flowers and summer lilies waiting to push through in colorful bloom. The days of melting snow fill our reservoirs with vital water ready for our use and the warmth of the sun is appreciated so much more as Winter wanes and Springtime emerges. In anticipation of Spring and in my own journey through Lent, the following is what I have been doing in Lenten discipline looking forward to the new beginnings that start in Spring and the newness of life that comes in the resurrection of our Lord. ) I have been praying. I have prayed for forgiveness for my failings and pray that you all can forgive me for the times I have failed you. I am praying for winter s chill to pass and the brightness of Spring and the glory of resurrection to be revealed in new ways. I pray for all who lead and all who follow. I am praying for you and your families for the very best and brightest of days filled with good health and wholeness of mind body and spirit. 2) I have looked to scripture. I am seeking to find similar times in the biblical narratives when God is most revealed in times of separating oneself from the world or taking a break from the busyness of life. 3) I have removed myself from social media. Human interaction is vital to all we do as a people of faith and finding that in its fullness and other church activities. 4) Worship of God together is where God comes to us in the Word and Jesus fills us with his presence at the Table of grace and forgiveness. Together we are called in the commandments to worship and it is worship that remains the greatest treasure for me as a pastor to share with others. 5) Finally, having the privilege to serve the people of Haiti helped me clearly understand that on my worst day, I rise to family and friends, food and shelter and am blessed beyond measure. 4 THE MESSENGER SPRING 207 Continued It is my sincere hope that the journey our Lord took unto death for the sins of the world is a reminder that we are blessed beyond measure and in him we find overwhelming LOVE. It will not be long until we gather to celebrate Holy Week, the ever-present reminder of the true cost of salvation and life beyond the grave. Peace in the love of Christ, +Pastor Jaime Intern: Continued from Page She continues to serve as a Worship Assistant, lector, Biblical Storyteller, and Eucharistic Home Visitor. She chaired St. David s Congregational Health Committee and was the Secretary of its Fellowship Committee. She also served as a Sunday School Teacher for grades 3 through 6 and adults, and as a Vacation Bible School instructor. She plays in the bell choir and is a flutist for its worship band. When she is not attending classes and studying, she volunteers at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital as an Associate Chaplain on call and for its cancer center. On campus, she is a member of the Student Association Executive Committee as its Treasurer. She is an avid gardener and enjoys reading mysteries, writing, crafting, cooking and playing with my grandchildren. Please look forward to Kathy and Allen s arrival at DELC later this Summer! DAWN MORDEN ACCEPTS DELC DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRY With Lois Hunter s announced retirement after 9 years of faithful service, we are extremely grateful that Dawn Morden has accepted the Director of Music Ministry position. Dawn has also faithfully served DELC over the years as an organist/accompanist, so it was a natural fit to offer her this additional responsibility.

As I ve mentioned before, my internship project is going to revolve around an Eco- Reformation, an initiative to promote better environmental stewardship in our congregation as well as around the

6 THE MESSENGER SPRING 207 Have you ever planted a tree? Or grew your own vegetables for a summer? Little things like this can have a huge impact if we all took the effort to do a little more; to be a little more conscious about our footprint we leave on this earth. As I ve mentioned before, my internship project is going to revolve around an Eco- Reformation, an initiative to promote better environmental stewardship in our congregation as well as around the region. During the month of April, we re going to have presentations, see a new recycling program, and come together again in a Walk with Worship where we will have the opportunity to worship God in creation itself. As I spoke about at our final Lenten worship, Environmental Stewardship is a passion of mine. I ve had an interest in it since I can remember. If you ever meet my parents, you can ask them about my recycling "project" when I was in elementary school, where I took things out of the trash and collected them to recycle. Needless to say, I just ended up with a pile of trash in my bedroom that is still joked about in my family today. And if you re ever driving around with me, you learn quickly that I am fascinated by wind turbines. I just think they are incredible inventions!! But for me, taking care of our earth just makes sense. God created everything on this earth, and we are all intertwined. Everything we do impacts us, and impacts everything around us. From the loss of the honeybee population to the deforestation that is still happening today, all of our human actions are affecting the ecosystems around us; ecosystems we are a part of. We can do our part here at DELC. We ve already cut down our paper usage by almost 500 pieces a week, as well as our toner usage. We will soon be recycling our Sunday bulletins as well as any other paper, plastic, and glass items that we use. We re going to have a paperless Sunday to honor Earth Day. And we are working with the synod to plant 500 trees throughout the region to commemorate the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation! Help us out by doing what you can. Do you have some land that you want to plant a new tree on? Let us know! Want to find out how you can be recycling at home? We can help direct you! Be conscious of how much waste you create at home and see if you can cut down on paper products by using flatware and glass dishes rather than paper and plastic. Or only take the necessary length shower so that you re not wasting water (I m guilty of that one!). Every little thing that we all do adds up and can make a difference.
