page1 CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER APRIL 2017

page2 HOLY WEEK SERVICES It's a full week of services for Holy Week. Wednesday we meet at 6:00pm to share together the scripture, song, and devotional, Goldendale Evening Prayers, that was written for us by Myron Fehr, followed by a soup supper. Then on Thursday and Friday evenings at 7:00pm we observe our Holy Week services. Supply Pastor Mary Johnson, will be with us for the week and Easter Sunday. Special music will include the male quartet and a saxaphone trio. PICTURE DIRECTORY Quite a number of you have not yet picked up your copy the new church Picture Directory. Why not get yours at the Easter Sunday service. Myron Fehr will be available to anyone who missed out on pictures and info and will produce your own special page for inclusion. HOME VISITS AND COMMUNION by Deborah Heart After too long a lapse, home visits to celebrate communion are again underway. During Sunday services with ordained clergy, elements are consecrated and prepared for transport to those unable to attend church. If you are among those who cannot get to services but would like a visit, please either call me at or leave a message on the church voic . On a recent Sunday, Reverend Mary Johnson prepared me to take communion to a dear friend in hospice. It was a blessing for all who participated and brought much comfort. God is with us at all times. Communion allows us to focus on that relationship. If you cannot attend worship, know that you are missed. Prayers are said for you. An opportunity to visit and share communion is just a phone call away. Deborah BIGGEST RAKE WINNER! Rich Marshall wins Biggest Rake category at the first outdoor Weed and Feed event of the year. We suspect Rich bought the new truck just so he could haul his big rake.

page3 Can you answer which is more fun? The weeding or the feeding?

page4 WEED AND FEED by Hal Eliason We managed to fit in a Tuesday evening of weeding, planting, pruning, and general cleanup with a crew of twelve before a wonderful time of pizza and fellowship. It was a nice start to the season! Prior to that, not much progress to report on this month. Between working around The advent schedule, some vigorous Winter weather and the recent Wednesday soup suppers for Lent, the Weed and Feed group hasn't met for a while. Our intention is to re-group after Easter and depending on weather conditions, resume our every other week activity schedule. If it's nice we'll get started where we left of last Fall in the Church yard... if it's nasty, we'll find a project indoors until it changes. MEETING WITH THE BISHOP By Myron Fehr On March 19 Bishop Wells was with us for preaching and officiating the service and sacraments and hung around with us for a time of discussion during the fellowship time. Myron Fehr took notes for the benefit of the Council and church and has them available to anyone who would like to know a bit of what was said. NEW MEMBER! Congratulations to our newest member of the CTKL Church family, Walter (Wally) Young! Wally was formally inducted by Bishop Wells on March 19. He transferred membership from Zion Lutheran Church in Redmond. Short Wave Radio and model trains are among Wally's passions and he owns a home here in Goldendale close to the hospital. A son and daughter-in-law, and Wally's grandaughter live in Goldendale and are key to his love of the area. MYRON BENZ VISIT! What a pleasure it was to have our Former Pastor, Myron Benz, with us this past week for Palm Sunday. He preached on the passion of our Lord. He shared about the significance of placing the palms and even their clothes in order to honor the King and how the events of the week were going to turn so dark that Jesus would implore God to Take this cup from me. Myron shared many remembrances of his time with us and seemed very happy to have been invited back to be part of our family. CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP from Rich Marshall Our worship team has decided to make an effort to have a contemporary worship service the last Sunday of each month from now through the summer months. A favorite of folks has been the male quartet that includes Rich Marshall, Doug Siegel, Steve Stout, and Myron Fehr. Of late the quartet has had the benefit of Cathy Shelton at the keyboard. HAPPY News!

page5 On Palm Sunday during fellowship hour Laurie Davenport and Rich Marshall announced their engagement to be married. Following applause Rich suggested that the real applause should have been reserved for the fact that when he proposed Laurie said yes! No date has been set. Rich shared that this move in their lives could not have happened without the grace of God and a supportive church. He thanked everyone for their kindnesses. WORLD TRAVELLERS Everyone knows that Dr. Ogden makes at least one mission trip each year to far-flung corners of the world. Lesser known is that Betty Zesiger also went and this year is the second trip that Shirley and Ordell Enstad have made with the team. They are still experiencing culture shock after having been home for only a few days from Laos. They also vacationed for a time in Vietnam. Welcome home! PRAYERS Our hearts go out to many folks both in our church and in our community. Among them are: John and Linda Quinn in John's mother having a stroke. She is stable but very ill. Mary Langsdorf as she faces health issues. The passing of our dear friend Claudia. The passing of Dwane Larson. During this time without a pastor at the helm if you have a prayer concern please contact Carole Thayer at NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK APRIL by Ivy Velarde Here is a big Shout Out of THANKS to the many volunteers who bring their time, talents, dedication and support to Christ the King Lutheran Church. Our church's volunteers are vital to the health and welfare of all we do for the church and its ministries. April 23-29, 2017 is National Volunteer Week which was established in 1974 for the purpose of recognizing all the volunteers who contribute their time in our schools, churches, hospitals and the many non profits that serve our communities. Over 30 million hours of service are provided by volunteers in over 30 countries each year. VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY!

page6 LOCALS SUFFER AS FOOD BANK CLOSES THREE DAYS! As the snow kept coming and piling up, our troubles were nothing compared to some of our Food Bank Clients. The snow plows of Goldendale piled the snow across the entrances of our drives so deep that not even 4x4 trucks could get through. And our volunteers and manager did not have a hope to get to the building. None of our usual go-to people could get us any equipment to deal with the circumstances. Consequently, the Food bank was closed for three days and our clients went without! Both the Church Council and the Food Bank Board are working to address the matter so that we are able to keep our ministries going no matter the weather! Did one of these dogs bite off Doug Siegel s arm as this photo suggests? What will be the consequences to his guitar playing? And how will he continue to be a right hand man to Myron Fehr without a right hand? Come to church Easter Sunday to get answers to these and other hard questions!

page7 Where Does our Offering Go? Each Sunday after church two volunteers record, count, and deposit the offerings made to the church. The majority of the money received is used by our church to pay for Pastoral and Secretary s services, and for the operation (think utilities) and maintenance of our church building and grounds. A small percentage of our weekly gifts are sent on to our Synod office on a monthly basis. This money is what is referred to as benevolence, or mission support. It pays for the Bishop and the Synod staff s services, helps to fund campus and outdoor ministries, and provides support to the 92 congregations of our Synod (Eastern Washington and Idaho.) One half of the money received by the Synod is passed on to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to provide support throughout the United States and the world. It supports Lutheran Seminaries, Universities, and other Social Ministries including Lutheran World Relief. Last month our church got a certificate of thanks from the Eastern Washington Idaho Synod in grateful appreciation for our 2016 Mission Support, which totaled $5, So you see when we give our gifts to Christ the King Lutheran Church in Goldendale, Washington, we are also giving to those in our region, our country, and the world. We have truly been empowered by the Holy Spirit through Christ, and given to the community and the world to tell the story of God s love and grace.

page8 SWEET MUSIC! An amazing thing has happened at CTKL Church for the first time in about 50 years (which is most of forever)! Our little congregation has TWO pianists!! Nearly three years ago when Sandee Marshall became increasingly ill and unable to serve at the piano, as she had done for more than a decade, Myron Fehr took up the slack. But on Christmas Eve we were blessed to have a new pianist added to the ranks as Myron moved over to the organ and Cathy Shelton occupied the piano bench. Cathy had been in an accident six years ago and had several surgeries on her hand. It was a tough and long recovery and just into Advent Cathy approached Myron and said that she had been practicing and thought that she was ready to give the piano another try. Cathy has been an active musician and accompanist since she was in High School. She played for church for years and has a world of printed music from both her and her mother. For Christmas Eve she had picked out a wonderful piece that she had asked Myron to sing and her to play piano. She has a wealth of suggestions for special music and we look forward to her sharing her gift and talents. Thank you Cathy! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY! (April 24) Mary Johnson, Supply Pastor CRAIG (April 27) and Sidne (April 12) CORBIN (April 29) ANN (April 28) (Don't recognize these names? Get a directory and dig a little!) Please take the time to welcome Bob and Linda Durdel to our church! They live at 171 Balsam Way and you can reach them at: lindanbob@frontier.com birthdays are: Bob 7/5 Linda 11/3

page9 LUTHER 500 Martin Luther made known to all his strong conviction that the gospel message put to music was more powerful than the preached word alone. Anyone who gives more than a passing thought will know it to be true. For what person on their deathbed has asked to hear their favorite sermon read one last time? No! Instead, as they pass they want to hear the hymn and music closest their heart...perhaps EINE FESTE BURG A Mighty Fortress that will usher them to the next life. Only memorized scripture may have as important a place in our hearts. One of Luther s lengthiest hymns is #746. Our Father, God in Heaven Above with its nine verses is a complete gospel sermon in song. It is usually included in worship in an abridged version of four verses. While Luther was dean of the University of Wittenburg he had a close musician friend, Victor Schumann. It was he who set the text to music in YOU ARE INVITED! Everyone has a story. Yours is valuable to us. Write it down and get it to Myron Fehr and we will include you in an upcoming newsletter. AND, a picture is worth a thousand words so your pics of our church family and happenings would be worth a lot!
