And we try to keep our list current. If you know of anyone who should be added or removed from the list, kindly contact Donna Von Seggern. Thank you. The VBS program this year is from Cokesbury Publishing, and is titled, "HERO CENTRAL: Discover Your Strength in God!" The planning materials are quite thorough but yet flexible for whatever the setting or length of VBS. VBS will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church--Hooper, from Monday, June 19 through Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 1:00-3:45 p.m. That time frame seemed to be the best for the majority of volunteers. A number of this year's confirmation students have volunteered to help with VBS, so we have an excellent group of helpers. Thanks to you all! The Cokesbury website contains a good deal of information about this VBS program, including sample songs. The web address is: it gives you an idea about the whole scope of the VBS program. We usually have a VBS mission project each year. We have contributed to God's Global Barnyard the last several years. Do you 3
4 have any suggestions for this year? There are a number of very worthwhile organizations. I'd like it to be something the children can take a personal interest in and have fun doing it. Use this registration form as directed on the form. 4
5 June 4th is the Day of Pentecost As recorded in the New Testament of the Bible, it was on the 50th day after Easter that the apostles were praying together and the Holy Spirit descended on them. They received the gift of tongues the ability to speak in other languages and immediately began to preach about Jesus Christ to Jewish people from all over the world who flocked to Jerusalem for the Feast of Shavuot. Christian Pentecost became not only a commemoration of the Holy Spirit s visit but also marks the birth of the Christian Church. 500th Anniversary of the Reformation To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in a spirit of mutual reconciliation, repentance, and hope, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha and the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are hosting a prayer service in Omaha, September 11th. The September service will be held at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church (2650 Farnam) on Monday, September 11th, at 7 p.m. Archbishop Lucas of the Archdiocese of Omaha will preach. Both bishops will co-preside at each service, and all are welcome and invited to attend. The service will use Common Prayer*, a resource developed by a joint commission of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Lutheran World Federation. The Common Prayer service is based on the joint ecumenical document, From Conflict to Communion, which calls on Roman Catholics and Lutherans worldwide to affirm their common faith. The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation is a celebration of the fundamental aspects of faith that the two bodies share in common. The two sides are committed to discussing their remaining differences with honesty and humility. By participating in this prayer service, Roman Catholics and Lutherans give public testimony to the shared 5
6 virtues of repentance and reconciliation, thanksgiving and hope through the merits of Jesus Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Soli Deo Gloria! (To God alone the Glory!). VOLUNTEERs can make a difference BE ONE! The Faith Food Pantry continues to grow in the numbers of clients served in several counties Dodge, Washington, Burt, Cuming and volunteers are always needed to make this ministry work. Food will be delivered from the Food Bank Friday, June 9th this month after 3:30 p.m. to the Immanuel Lutheran School Gymnasium east of Winslow. The food is then distributed to the clients the second Saturday of the month (June 10th). Help is needed on Friday to get the food into the auditorium and set up and ready for the distribution on Saturday. Then of course, volunteers are needed to help distribute the food to the participants who pick up this food. In May food was distributed to 147 households totaling 449 people. A total of 14,737 pounds of food was distributed to these families for an average of pounds per household/ 32.8 pounds per person. Members of these households help as they are able with the distribution of the food. It is an awesome feeling to be able to touch the lives of these people. You may contact David and Donna for more information: , , , devious@midlands.net. Save the date God s work. Our hands. Sunday is Sept. 10 God s work. Our hands. is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the ELCA one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The suggested date for the 2017 dedicated day of service is Sunday, Sept. 10. You work every day to make your community a better place. Let us continue doing this work together in 2017! Please let your council chairperson know of any ideas that you have that can be done for this year s project. St. John s: Becky Von Seggern ; St. Paul s: Chris Heitshusen

Ten years ago, LFS opened the Fremont Area Building Families Boutique providing early intervention and prevention programs to families with children from pregnancy through age five. Now know as the Rupert Dunklau Center for Healthy Families, more than 3500 families have participated in its parenting programs. Your support allows LFS to empower families toward self-sufficiency while breaking generational cycles of poverty, child abuse, neglect and isolation. 11

13 Father s Day History Though Father s Day wasn t made a national holiday until 1972, the efforts of one woman in Washington sparked a movement to celebrate dads long before then. Sonora Dodd and the First Father's Day In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was inspired to create a holiday honoring fathers. William Jackson Smart, her father, was a farmer and Civil War veteran that raised Sonora and her five younger brothers by himself after his wife, Ellen, died giving birth to their youngest child in While attending a Mother s Day church service in 1909, Sonora, then 27, came up with the idea. Within a few months, Sonora had convinced the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA to set aside a Sunday in June to celebrate fathers. She proposed June 5, her father s birthday, but the ministers chose the third Sunday in June so that they would have more time after Mother s Day (the second Sunday in May) to prepare their sermons. So it was that on June 19, 1910, Sonora delivered presents to handicapped fathers, boys from the YMCA decorated their lapels with fresh-cut roses (red for living fathers, white for the deceased), and the city s ministers devoted their homilies to fatherhood. A National Holiday The widely publicized events in Spokane struck a chord that reached all the way to Washington, D.C., and Sonora's celebration started it's path to becoming a national holiday. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson and his family personally observed the day. Eight years later, President Calvin Coolidge signed a resolution in favor of Father s Day to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed an executive order that the holiday be celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Under President Richard Nixon, in 1972, Congress passed an act officially making Father s Day a national holiday. (Six years later, Sonora died at age 96.) 13

15 A little Holy Humor During these serious and troubled times, people of all faiths should remember these four great religious truths: 1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as God's Chosen People. 2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. 3. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian world. 4. Baptists do not recognize each other at the liquor store.
