3 Our personal relationship with God can be measured directly in proportion to our love and care for one another (I John 3:16-20). We do not accept the cultural model that seeks every person s move toward complete independence. God s intention is clearly to move us toward a relationship of healthy inter-dependence (I Corinthians 12:21 ff, II Corinthians 8). We need one another for growth in our understanding and experience of God and to fulfill our God-given responsibility to love others as we love ourselves. In order to help each other fulfill this kind of relationship, New City Fellowship is committed to a community of house churches through which the primary care of the people of God for one another can take place. Our commitment to each other as fellow members of God s family means that we will walk through all the ups and downs of life together. It also means that we commit to supporting each other s basic needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, nurture, love, and care. Pastors and deacons assist the members of the church in fulfilling this call to love, both by modeling and by teaching the congregation how to walk in the grace of the Gospel to fulfill this calling. This instruction takes place and is best expressed in each of the house churches, and House Church Teams. Presently there are five House Church Teams each named by a book from the Bible and representing a community of house churches: Ephesians, Galatians, Romans, Colossians, and Deuteronomy. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47

9 LEADING THE BODY IN THE CARE OF THE BODY Diaconal Opportunities in your House Church Meeting one another s basic needs within the church is best done in relationship with your house church. With support of the diaconal ministry, house church members demonstrate their love for our Lord God and for our neighbor (Matt. 22:36-40) with the sharing of our resources (time, treasure and talents) during times of need (Acts 2:42-47). If needs are financial in nature, and exceed the ability of the house church, the diaconal care leader may make a recommendation for diaconal resources to fulfill the need. If needs are related to food, clothing, furniture, or transportation, and exceed the ability of the house church, the Mercy Coordinator can coordinate access to the appropriate diaconal ministry. Sometimes we may be asked to consider the needs of families outside of our house church. If circumstances allow for it, an individual house church may be provided an opportunity to GIVE support to another house church, or RECEIVE necessary support from another house church in order to be a blessing to a member of the body. We believe this is a necessary part of God s plan to knit us together as one (Rom. 12:5, 1 Cor. 10:17, 12:21). Through use of an online social network, NewCityExchange, members can donate to or make requests from the Exchange ministry. For more information on the New City Exchange, contact your Mercy Coordinator or Stephen Tyree, Furniture Ministry Team leader at swtyree@gmail.com

10 House Work is a diaconal ministry initiative that enables house church members to join with other house churches to support the operations of diaconal ministries, and demonstrate God s love and providence to others. Two to three times a year, your House Church Team will be asked to serve in the various diaconal ministries. Ministry opportunities may include: sorting clothing, delivering furniture, filling food pantry orders, cleaning ministry areas, learning about diaconal ministry opportunities of the Stewardship ministry, assisting with title transfers, cleaning a car, visiting a St. Louis attraction with a new immigrant family, or mentoring someone looking for work, to name a few. Activities may take place at anytime and often can be changed to accommodate schedules. You are encouraged to make a 2 hour commitment of time. Sign up sheets are provided to Mercy Coordinators in advance, and include necessary details (dates and times). HC@W Schedule 2016: January (Galatians), February (Romans), March (Colossians), April (Ephesians), May (Galatians), June (Romans), July (Colossians), August (Ephesians), September (Galatians), October (Romans), November (Colossians), and December (Deuteronomy). Seasonal and Other Ministry Activities From year to year there may be diaconal opportunities to serve such as: Project Angel Tree (distributing Christmas gifts to families of prisoners living within our church communities), Cold Weather Drives (focusing on gathering winter gear to keep the poor in our church family and those we serve through our RSL ministries warm), Back-to-School Supply drives or Holiday Food Baskets. See other opportunities to serve at New City Fellowship in other ministries, including Restore St. Louis, by visiting newcity.org/universitycity/get-involved/ 50 Ways to Get Involved at New City

11 Within the House Church Ministry, there are six leadership positions represented. Pastoral Leader ordained elder and member of the NCF session whose primary role is to provide spiritual support and development to their House Church leadership teams. Elder the role of the elder (not serving as a House Church leader) is to assist the Pastoral Leader in the development of House Church leaders and with providing pastoral counsel to Deacons, and house church members. House Church Leader the role of this leader is to provide spiritual leadership and direction for the members of their house church. The House Church leader should strive to understand and communicate God s direction for NCF and encourage commitment to the church s mission, vision, and core values. This leader should also support the diaconal care of the house church by assisting and supporting the Mercy Coordinator and by remaining in active communication with the Diaconal Care Leader. Diaconal Care Leader The Diaconal Care leader is an ordained deacon and member of the NCF Diaconate Team. Their primary role is to provide diaconal support to the Pastoral Team. This is accomplished through the coordination and support of Mercy Coordinators representing each of the house churches. We also have Deacons who serve as Diaconal Ministry leaders and support the Diaconal Care Leader within the House Church ministry. Mercy Coordinator The role of the Mercy Coordinator is to support the House Church leader in their effort to provide for the diaconal care of their house church membership. This will be accomplished through their knowledge and wise application of diaconal principles and ministry resources. The Mercy Coordinator should be a spiritually mature member of the house church, and be able to serve as an active representative of the house church with the Diaconal Care leader.
