WORSHIP PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Prayers of the People provided for Lift Up Your Hearts have been composed to echo or complement words and images from the Scriptures, Proper prayers, suggested music, and sermon resources provided for each Sunday. They may be used as is, or revised or adapted according to local need. The response for the prayers remains the same for each Sunday during Lift Up Your Hearts. It is hoped that the words will be readily committed to memory, whether said or sung. A musical setting for the response has been composed specially for Lift Up Your Hearts. The sung response is fitting for the uplifting tone that is the aspiration of this six- week initiative. Therefore, you are encouraged to sing the response throughout the Sundays of our Diocese- wide celebration. Prayers of the People are also provided for Harvest Thanksgiving. Some congregations may choose to observe this festival on the final Sunday of September, having it serve as the launch for Lift Up Your Hearts. However, if your congregation is observing the occasion on a Sunday during October, you are encouraged to use the Prayers of the People provided for that date rather than those provided for Harvest Thanksgiving. 1
HARVEST THANKSGIVING Intercessor: That our thanksgiving this day may deepen our gratitude for God's goodness, let us lift up our hearts to God, as we sing/say: Response: Turn our grateful hearts into lives that bring you praise. If the response is to be sung, a Cantor (or the Presider or Intercessor) sings the response. All repeat the response. All sing the response after each bidding. If said, the Intercessor says the response. All repeat the response. All say the response after each bidding. Let us pray for the church, especially for this congregation of N. With our sisters and brothers throughout the Diocese, let us pray for [insert from the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer]. With Anglicans throughout the world, we pray for [insert from the Anglican Cycle of Prayer]. That we may be set free from fear and worry and always trust in the abundance of God s goodness, we lift up our hearts to God: /R/ Let us pray for the earth, for good weather and fruitful harvests for all to share. Let us pray, too, for the nations and peoples of the world, [especially N.] That the wealth of our world may become a force for generosity rather than greed; a source of hope rather than discontent; an agent of friendship rather than enmity, we lift up our hearts to God: /R/ 2
Let us pray for this Dominion of Canada as we approach the upcoming Federal election. That, as they vote, citizens will show concern not only for themselves, but also for the wellbeing of the most vulnerable in our society and in the world, we lift up our hearts to God: /R/ Let us pray for the sick and for all in need, [especially N.;] That they may know God's healing embrace through the compassion of many sisters and brothers, we lift up our hearts to God: /R/ Let us remember the dead, [especially N.;] and that we may be filled with laughter and raise shouts of joy when the fortunes of all God s people are restored, we lift up our hearts to God: /R/ The Presider or Intercessor concludes the Prayers of the People with the following Collect: Giving and forgiving God, you created the good earth and blessed it. Give us glad and generous hearts, that we may rejoice and give thanks for the abundance of your creation, the depths of your mercy, and your care for all. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. 3
OCTOBER 4 Intercessor: Response: Longing for the day when Creation will be set free from bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God, let us lift up our hearts to the Lord, as we sing/say: Turn our grateful hearts into lives that bring you praise. For this Diocese as we engage in the worship and activities of the Lift Up Your Hearts celebration; that we may experience transformation in our lives, and bring praise to God in the communities we serve, let us lift our hearts in prayer: /R/ For the people of St. Paul s, Thunder Bay, and Archdeacon Deborah Kraft, their Incumbent, The Rev. Dr. Festus Yeboah- Asuamah; and that all Christians will strive to safeguard the integrity of God s creation, let us lift our hearts in prayer: /R/ 4
For all who shape public policies affecting the planet and its creatures, especially those who hold, or are running for elected office; that they may consider wisely and selflessly the welfare of those who will come after us, let us lift our hearts in prayer: /R/ For the people and all creatures of God s world that are ill, or in danger, pain, or special need, [particularly N.]; For all who suffer from the unjust, violent, or intemperate use of the earth s resources; that God will heal and redeem the wounds of creation, visiting the places which suffer from our indifference, neglect, or greed. let us lift our hearts in prayer: /R/ Let us remember those who sleep in Christ, [especially N.] And that the Giver of all good gifts may awaken us daily to our dependence upon his generosity, let us lift our hearts in prayer: /R/ The Presider or Intercessor concludes the Prayers of the People with the following Collect: O God from whom all good proceeds: You established your covenant with all creation, and called it to be just, free, and fruitful according to your will. Guide all your people by your wisdom to walk upon the earth in righteousness and peace, and to honor you in our kinship with all your creatures; through our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, to the ages of ages. Collect from: 5
OCTOBER 11 Intercessor: Response: God was in Christ, reconciling the world to God's self, and has entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation. That we may live no longer for ourselves, but for the One sent for the world s salvation, let us lift up our hearts to the Lord, as we sing/say: Turn our grateful hearts into lives that bring you praise. If the response is to be sung, a Cantor (or the Presider or Intercessor) sings the response. All repeat the response. All sing the response after each bidding. If said, the Intercessor says the response. All repeat the response. All say the response after each bidding. Ours is the God who draws us into the circle of divine life. Let us pray for the church throughout the world, especially the Diocese of Tamale in Ghana, West Africa, and its bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Jacob Ayeebo. Let us pray, too, for our Bishop, Stephen, and this Diocese of Algoma, especially our Cathedral Church of St. Luke and its clergy, The Very Rev. James McShane, Dean of Algoma, The Rev. James Mosher, Assistant Curate, Archdeacon Harry Huskins and Archdeacon Hugh Hamilton, Honorary Assistants, and The Very Rev. Nelson Small, Dean Emeritus. That we may live as the ongoing shape of God s love in the world we lift up our hearts to the Lord: /R/ 6
Ours is the God who will not take up violence to counter violence. Let us pray for our world, rife with disease and disconnection, [remembering especially N.] That those who hold power over others may be troubled and transformed by the demands of peace and justice, we lift up our hearts to the Lord: /R/ Ours is the God who, in Christ, assumed all that it means to be human. Let us pray for the sick and the suffering, [especially N.] Let us pray, too, for victims of poverty and violence, and for those who live on the margins of society, [especially N.] That the eyes of all who await deliverance may see God s deeds of power and mercy, we lift up our hearts to the Lord: /R/ Ours is the God whose presence surrounds and accompanies us. Let us pray for all who travel this long weekend. And that God will watch over our going out and our coming in, from this time forth and for evermore, we lift up our hearts to the Lord: /R/ Ours is the God from whose love nothing can separate us. Let us remember those who have died, especially N. {pause for silent or spoken remembrance} And that we will trust in the faithfulness of the God who upheld our ancestors, we lift up our hearts to the Lord: /R/ 7
The Presider or Intercessor concludes the Prayers of the People with the following Collect: O God, in Baptism you anoint us and seal us as your own forever. Give us grace to walk in newness of life, that your gifts of healing and reconciliation may be enjoyed by every race and nation. We ask this through your anointed One, Jesus the Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 8
OCTOBER 18 Intercessor: Response: The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. That we may faithfully serve the One who chose us to be holy and blameless before him in love, let us pray to the Lord, as we sing/say: Turn our grateful hearts into lives that bring you praise. If the response is to be sung, a Cantor (or the Presider or Intercessor) sings the response. All repeat the response. All sing the response after each bidding. Doug Prebble and the people of St. Alban the Martyr Church, Capreol; and for this congregation and parish, that we may receive each moment past, present, and future as a gift from One who is Creator and Redeemer, let us pray to the Lord: /R/ For justice, reconciliation, restoration and peace in the world, [especially N.] That we will risk persecution and hardship to work for reform in society, seeking the well- being of those who are the blessed of God s Kingdom, let us pray to the Lord: /R/ For tomorrow s Federal election, that all who offer themselves for public office and those who vote will act from a posture of gratitude and service, let us pray to the Lord: /R/ 9
For the sick, the lonely, the fearful and all in need, [especially N.] That all who call on God s name may find cause to say, I will trust and not be afraid, for God is my strength and my might, let us pray to the Lord: /R/ Let us remember the dead, [especially N.] And that in all things we may rejoice and be glad, confident in the inheritance that is ours in Christ, let us pray to the Lord: /R/ The Presider or Intercessor concludes the Prayers of the People with the following Collect: Lord God, the well- spring of life, pour into our hearts the living water of your grace. By your light we see light. Increase our faith, and grant that we may walk in the brightness of your presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord. A Prayer for Grace and Faith from the Book of Alternative Services (1985), p. 131, and based on the biblical verse that serves as this year s Bishop s Motto: With thee is the well of life: and in thy light shall we see light. (Psalm 36.9, Coverdale) 10
OCTOBER 25 Intercessor: In baptism we have been marked with the sign of the cross and joined to the One who gave himself for the life of the world. That we may present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, let us offer ourselves in Christ, as we sing/say: Response: Turn our grateful hearts into lives that bring you praise. If the response is to be sung, a Cantor (or the Presider or Intercessor) sings the response. All repeat the response. All sing the response after each bidding. That all who bear Christ s name may display profound love for one another, and extend genuine hospitality to those we are tempted to overlook or judge, Let us pray for those who shepherd the People of God, especially our Stephen, our Bishop, Colin, our Metropolitan, Fred, our Primate, and Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury. 11
That they may be for us icons of hope, signs of grace, and examples of gospel service, Let us pray for N., elected as our Member of Parliament, and for N., who will serve as Prime Minister. Let us pray, too, for all the nations and peoples of the earth, [especially N.] That the paths we walk will prove wide enough for all peoples: for the homeless, aliens in flight, prisoners, and those on the margins of society, Let us pray for the sick, the lonely, the fearful, and all in need, [especially N.] That they may experience God s compassionate embrace through the care of many sisters and brothers, Let us remember the dead, [especially N.] And that we may look forward to the consummation of God's Reign at the heavenly banquet table, The Presider or Intercessor concludes the Prayers of the People with the following Collect: Great God, your love has called us here. By love and for love we were made. Give us grace to set your table in the church and in the world that all people may taste your goodness and rejoice in your salvation. We ask in the name of the One whom you have sent, Jesus the Christ. 12
NOVEMBER 1 ALL SAINTS DAY Intercessor: Response: That the insights and inspiration gained over our time together in our Diocesan Lift Up Your Hearts celebration may lead to renewal in the church, and prompt gratitude and thanksgiving in the world around us, let us offer ourselves in Christ as we sing/say: Turn our grateful hearts into lives that bring you praise. If the response is to be sung, a Cantor (or the Presider or Intercessor) sings the response. All repeat the response. All sing the response after each bidding. Calling, sending God, we pray for the mission of the church. We pray especially for the people of All Saints, Huntsville, and their Incumbent, Archdeacon Dawn Henderson; the people of All Saints, Coniston, and their Incumbent, Canon Genny Rollins; we pray, too, for Bishop Timothy Thornton and the Diocese of Truro in England, and Bishop Christopher David Goldsmith and the Diocese of Truro- St. Germans. That, in our worship, testimony and service, the church may be a sign, witness and foretaste of your Kingdom, Light for the righteous, we pray for the nations and peoples of the earth, [especially N.] That we may be delivered from all devices of violence and oppression, and believe deeply in the dignity of every human being, 13
Wellspring of freedom, we pray for those longing for deliverance from fear or anxiety, oppression or want, illness or any other affliction, [especially N.] That all who thirst may take the water of life as a gift, Ever Faithful One, in whom our future rests secure, we remember before you those who have died in the peace of Christ, and the departed whose faith is known to you alone. [We remember especially, N.] And that we, with them, may feast at the promised banquet on your holy mountain, The Presider or Intercessor concludes the Prayers of the People with the following Collect: Lord Jesus, come quickly! Hear the prayer our hearts lift this day, fill us with expectation for your coming again in glory, and shape us for the Kingdom that is God s gift, which we glimpse now through the power of the Spirit. We pray in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, through all ages and for ever. 14
