We received the HOT POTATO from Chapter M at our chapter gathering and Buddy & Kim took it to Chapter F that same day. We attended the North Carolina Convention and the Traveling Plaque Capture in Aiken. We had an apple ride to North Carolina and visited Bald Rock and Pretty Place. Chapter S was well represented at the South Carolina District Picnic and we all enjoyed the food, games, and fellowship. Four members also went to the Midlands Ride for Kids last Sunday. Thank you all for participating. This participation shows that Chapter S is alive and doing well! We have members that are new to the chapter and please make them feel at home by getting to know them. This Saturday we ll discuss other upcoming events and rides, so be sure to attend our monthly gathering. See you there. 4 From the desk of your ACD: Hello everyone, Asst. Chapter Director: I would like to thank all of you who remembered my family and me when my sister passed away on September 30. Your thoughts, prayers and cards meant a lot to us during this very sad time for our family. Thanks to all of you! September 21, 2013 Chapter S Gathering It was great to have 18 members of our Chapter S members join us for the September gathering, and 7 visitors from Chapter M in Greenwood. Doyle Montgomery from Chapter M told us that he brought us a little house warming gift, and promptly presented the Hot Potato to Bill Wilson. We all figured Chapter M was up to something, we were right! It was great to see all of them who joined us! Chapter F visit Buddy and Kim traveled to Chapter F to deliver the Hot Potato to them that same evening. The Hot Potato has really been on the move recently and that s the idea of it, to keep members visiting other chapters! September 27, 2013 Ride to the NC District Convention in Concord, NC. We had a good group of 11 riders attend the convention, Bill W., Roger and Mary Hair, Glenn and Donna, Buddy and Kim, Ron Driggers, Wayne and Marianne and me. We were a little disappointed in the number of vendors and the crowd this year. Hopefully next year will be better for the NC District. Most of the members stopped for an early supper on the way home, I decided to ride on home from the convention to wait for an update on my sister s condition. With everything that has gone on with my sister s passing, the problems I am having with my back, I have missed most of the chapter activities this past month. I will be returning to Ohio on the 22 nd of this month for the graveside service for my sister. I am hoping by the time I return from Ohio my back will have healed from the injections and I will be ready to get back to riding and chapter activities. I hope everyone enjoys the cooler days for some great riding, remembering to watch out for those 4 legged critters that like to hop out on the roads at any given time, and the leaves that are falling and can be slick at times. So be safe, but ride!!! Until next time, Your ACD, Jane Brinck SC District Picnic: Chapter S Members Glenn, Millie, Larry & Kaye, Bob & Dee enjoyed the shade; Jon, Dee, Marianne & Wayne and Bill relaxed after a great meal; the SC District Staff served; Roger and Kim participated in the water carry game. 4

Ride for Kids, Lexington: Midlands Ride for Kids was October 13 th at Lexington High School. Jon and his niece rode the ride along with Buddy & Kim. TV personality Tyler Ryan MC ed and the event raised over $23,000 for children with pediatric brain tumors. 5

Membership Enhancement: It s fall, and the leaves are beginning to turn. It s a beautiful time of year. This is one of the best times of year to ride, and we hope you are taking advantage of the nice weather we are having. If you can t take off to the mountains to see the changing colors, take a short ride to some of the rural areas of our part of the state. There are a lot of great places to ride if you just ask some of your fellow riders where they like to go. You can read the newsletters of other chapters near us and find out where they are going or have been. If you know of a place that we might enjoy let us know and let s ride. It s too pretty to sit inside and the open road awaits us. Donna Bumgarner bumgarnerg@bellsouth.com Chapter S Members participated in the games at the District Picnic. Roger, Jon, Bob & Bill lined up for the water carry, Kim & Glenn held the apple almost until the end, Bill poured water while Kim balanced the bottle, and Roger had a good stream pouring. 6

Do You Have An Action Plan? Newberry Saluda Wings Rider Educator: Action Plan? Action plan for what? Well, for those "Out-Of-Nowhere" hazards we have all encountered at one time or another while riding our bikes. Pot holes, road kill, trash in your lane, things falling or flying off vehicles in front of you and those ever present sudden swerving 4-wheelers that apparently want your lane, even though you are still in it! These and so many other things that come at you out of nowhere. Missing these sudden hazards is a combination of your action plan and your riding skills. Some riders tend to look feet in front of their front tire. That just does not give you any reaction time at all. All Rider Courses stress the rider looking further ahead. I know if you have taken a certified riding course, one of the things that you continually hear stressed is, if you look down, that is probably where you are going to go. What is around you? Which way do you go to avoid the problem? Try to know what is next to you, behind and in front of you? You've got to react, you are either going to go right, left or brake. You do not have much time to figure out what you have to do. Know your surroundings. Left lane clear of vehicles? Right lane? Anyone tailgating you to where you can't apply brakes? Be aware of what is around you. Give yourself room to move to an escape route if the rider/driver in front of you has a sudden change of travel or if an out of nowhere hazard confronts you. If someone wants to pass you, let them. Try to maintain your spacing when travelling with a group. With road debris, some people see it, stare at it and then hit it! Program your mind to think of what to do to NOT hit something. Your goal is to ride safely around the hazard. Alertness and reaction time go hand in hand. Choose wisely. If two or more potential hazards are facing you, which one are you going to choose? Not many options and not much time to make a decision to react to the decision that is made. Try to pick the decision that will give you the least injury. Plan ahead, choose wisely, react quickly and ride safely, and as always, be very watchful for the unwatchful. I have no idea where this article came from but it has so much good info that I wanted to share it with all of you. Dee Collyer Ride Educator Buddy and Kim got the Redick Award because Buddy didn t know when to quit transmitting on his CB. 7

Editor s Comments: Since being chosen as Region A Couple of the Year, Buddy and I have been busy on the road. Our new trike already has 10,000 miles on it. We visited Chapter F and then attended the North Carolina Convention to see their Couple of the Year selection. Last week we went to the Virginia Convention in Salem to see their Couple of the Year selection. At the same time, Region N had their Regional Couple of the Year selection because Region N does not have a yearly convention. The Tennessee Couple won Region N and they were the couple that we were cheering for. We had planned to attend the Mississippi District Convention, but thanks to the Federal Government shutdown (me working with no pay), our plans were curtailed. Oh well, maybe next year. The convention season is slowing down, but we will still be very mobile. We have plans to attend many chapter and district functions as possible, so you will be seeing us soon. The week before we competed in the Regional selection, Phil and Judy Stone asked us if we would like to re-join the district again as Assistant District Directors. We accepted never realizing that we might win at Region. Therefore we wear triple hats: chapter, district and region team members! But as was told to me in a Leadership Training Seminar, Always ask a busy person to do something, because you know it will get done. See you on the road. Kim Summer buddykimsum@gmail.com Phil and Judy Stone presented Buddy and Kim with their appointment as Assistant District Directors. 8
