GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE March 2018 About this month s Sponsors: Ray and Kathy Conrad joined GWRRA in February The Conrad s have given so much to GWRRA starting off in KY-N as Pins and Patches (Kathy) and Ride Coordinator (Ray). Then they served 4 years as ACD and another 4 as CD s for Chapter N. After that, they did 3 years as Assistant District Directors and another 3 as District Directors and when they finished there, they went back to Chapter N and did another 2 years as Directors. When Chapter N closed they went back to district as Vendor Coordinators (an office they still hold), and as Assistants to the District Director. In 2016 they stepped up as Assistant Chapter Directors for Chapter G for two years just because they were asked. Chapter G is honored to have Ray and Kathy as members. 3 Page 3 March 2018 Chapter Director s Report Happy Birthday Chapter G! March marks our 31 st year as a chartered chapter of GWRRA. We have a calendar full of activities for you to choose from throughout the year. Come on out and see for yourself why Chapter G continues to thrive into our 3 rd decade. Those of you attending the February gathering witnessed the awards presentations for Congratulations to all the members receiving awards and a special thank you to Gary Heil for all the hard work in tracking the events and mileages necessary to determine the award winners. If you have not already done so, please ensure that you give Gary your beginning mileage for Even if you only ride a few miles throughout the year, your mileage is used to determine the overall miles the chapter rides each year. Thank you to all the members who have participated in the Chapter visitations so far this year. We have been accumulating quite a bit of points and even captured the Traveling Plaque a couple of times already this year. Besides being a great way to get to know other members of GWRRA throughout Kentucky, the visitation program is actually a fun competition with the winning chapter being awarded a nice $ check at the Kentucky Blast. Each year every chapter in GWRRA has to pay a $ charter fee and winning the visitation program is a fun way to earn the charter fee. We were successful in winning last year and are off to a great start this year. Please try to join us at least once this year. It really is a lot of fun meeting fellow GWRRA members, and to see how other chapters operate. Points are awarded for miles traveled to the gathering or event, number of people attending, and for the type of event attended. Riding season is just around the corner and some of us have already taken a ride or two this year. It won t be long now until we can ride almost every day. To say, I can t wait would be an understatement! Stay safe! Rick and Leah Cridlin KY District / Chapter G Team Directors
Page 4 March 2018 Treasurer s Report Congratulations to our winners from the February Get Together!! Charlie Thornton won the $10 membership draw this month. One of our visitors, Rick Broadway (District Director) won 1 st place of $49, Judy Norris won 2 nd place of $29 and Sue Zimmerman won 3 rd place of $20. Thank you to all who participated at the February gathering. I want to thank Kim Hedger and Jack Redd for doing a great job selling tickets!! Dean was unable to join us due to training. If it wasn t for Dean/Kim and our substitute, Jack Redd selling our tickets and our wonderful members/guests, we wouldn t have the opportunity to do the fun events that we do each year THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Luanne Williams, KY District/ Chapter Treasurer Membership Enhancement Report Here it is March and getting closer to spring!! The roads will be soon clear of salt and snow and we will be riding again. Please take this time to spread the word about how much fun we have at our Chapter Get Togethers and our many Chapter Events!! In fact, Rick Cridlin mentioned at the February Get Together that we had 83 events last year there is always something for everyone. As a reminder, please check your membership cards for expiration dates to ensure that your membership is current. Please contact us if any of your contact information has changed. If you have any questions, changes or need assistance, please don t hesitate to contact us. Our Chapter G Membership Enhancement Address is: mec@chapterg.org.. Jerry & Luanne Williams KY District / Chapter G Membership Enhancement Program Coordinators Awards As is usual for February, we presented the mileage and participation awards for the previous year. Our perennial high mileage award winner, Bob Moss, scored the top prize again. He slipped this year riding only 44,491 miles. Rick Cridlin advanced from Third place in 2016 to Second place for 2017 with 13,398 miles. Third place was won by Tom Dierig with 10,312 miles. A special Honorary Mention award went to Charlie Thornton who was only 83 miles behind Tom. The average miles ridden by everyone else was 5,182. Troy Robinson was closest to that having ridden 5,174 miles. The Chapter rode a total of 182,214 miles. Kim Pommier won the SWAG award with a guess of 176,405. This is the third year in a row that a co-rider won the SWAG award. During 2017, the Chapter sponsored 87 events. Our earnest Chapter Director, Rick, participated in 63 events but requested to not be included for a participation award. So the first place winner with 60 events was me. Second place with 57 events was Dean Hedger. Third place went to Charlie Hobbs with 55 events. The Chapter has many events planned for Start preparing the bikes for the riding season and join us for some fun! Gary, Darlene & Raven Heil, Awards
Page 5 March 2018 District Educators Report Copied and summarized from Insight News letter from January This is for everyone s information I hope it answers a few of your questions. Rider Education Appointments There has been much confusion as to the proper appointment procedure for the Officers of the Rider Education Program at the Chapter and District levels. Of specific note is the appointment process for the Chapter and District Ride Coordinator. It may be beneficial to review the Officer Appointment Process as posted on the Officer s Connection: All Officers but Director (At District and Chapter level the Officer may be called Coordinator) Rider Education, University, Membership Enhancement, Motorist Awareness, Finance To summarize the process for Rider Education Officers at the Chapter level: The Chapter Director will locate a candidate for the Chapter Ride Coordinator position. After determining that the candidate meets the qualifications for the position, he/she will discuss the candidate with the District Ride Coordinator. In the case where there is no District Ride Coordinator assigned, the Chapter Director will discuss the candidate with the Director of Rider Education, or their designee. The District Ride Coordinator (Director of Rider Education/designee) will interview the Chapter candidate, and then discuss the candidate s qualifications with the Chapter Director, offering a recommendation in favor of, or against, the candidate. Should the Chapter Director decide to appoint the candidate against the recommendation of the District Ride Coordinator (Director of Rider Education/designee), the District Ride Coordinator (Director of Rider Education/designee) will create a plan to train and/or coach the Chapter candidate and discuss that plan with the Chapter Director. The Chapter Director will complete the Officer Appointment Form and MOU and mail them to the Home Office. The Appointing Process for District Educator or District Ride Coordinator is the same as at the Chapter level. The District Director identifies the candidate and discusses their qualifications with the Director of Rider Education or their designee. The Director of Rider Education, or designee, will interview the candidate and discuss the candidate s qualifications with the District Director, will offer a recommendation in favor of, or against, the candidate. Should the District Director decide to appoint the candidate against the recommendation of the Director of Rider Education/designee, the Director of Rider Education/designee will create a plan to train and/or coach the District candidate and discuss that plan with the District Director. The District Director will complete the Officer Appointment Form and MOU and mail them to the Home Office. New District Educators, District Ride Coordinators, or Chapter Ride Coordinators moving into these positions from a Chapter or District Educator position will not be required to take the Knowledge Level Evaluation (KLE). Any candidate not moving from a Rider Educator position may download the KLE from the Rider Education website, REP Officer Section tab. The candidate should answer the questions, then mail the KLE to the Director of Rider Education for review. The Director of Rider Education will contact the candidate to discuss the answers and offer any guidance required. The Director of Rider Education will then contact the Chapter or District Director to inform them that the KLE has been completed so that the Appointment paperwork may be completed. 6 Page 6 March 2018 Technical Educator Report Due to an unexpected medical issue, I am unable to provide a new report for the March Newsletter. So, I thought I would share an old report for those who may not remember it and for those who were unable to attend the Chapter gathering. This is the report I presented March This month s word is wax. This word is used to refer to a group of organic compounds, both naturally and synthetically occurring, which are insoluble in water, malleable at room temperature, and typically begin to melt around 113 degrees F. Natural waxes are typically formed from esters of fatty acids and long chain alcohols. Some waxes come from animals, such as beeswax from bees, and lanolin, from wool. Other waxes come from plants, such as carnauba from the Brazilian palm. Synthetic waxes are long-chain hydrocarbons lacking functional groups. Paraffin is one common type. I guess no one will ever find wax in Chapter G, as this is a highly functional group. Wax has many uses. It can be formed in a taper, or hardened in a jar, to become a candle. It can be used as a seal for letters, or when canning food. Wax is also found in chewing gum. And it is often used in association with water sports equipment such as surf boards and skis, and I guess for swim suits too, because in my research I found a reference about bikini waxing. I personally use wax to protect and beautify our classic Wing. Waxes form an invisible barrier to prevent damage to the painted and plated surfaces of our bikes. There are many different waxes available, in spray, liquid, and paste. Some waxes are better than others, and I am sure that many people here have a favorite wax. I like to look for products that include UV protection to prevent color fade. Waxes with carnauba tend to last a very long time between applications. Always start with a clean cool motorcycle that is not in direct sunlight. Be sure to use clean cloths, turning the wiping surface often. Be wary of waxes that contain cleaners or advertise renewing the painted surface, as these products often contain abrasives, and will cause scratches in modern painted finishes leaving them dull and hazy. 7 Page 7 March 2018 Pins & Patches Warmer rider weather will soon be here :) Make sure you have all the riding gear you need - if it's a Chapter shirt you need, just let me know! We have, so far, a good crowd riding down to Spring Fling. If you're interested in going, make sure you register and let Rick/Leah know... I have all the goodies you might need for your vest, just let me know! Time still to get any needed maintenance done - be ready for the warm weather... as always, make sure that you're wearing some kind of hearing protection - once it's gone, it's gone forever. Safe Travels John Keiter, Pins & Patches If you have any information that needs to be passed on to your Chapter G family, please contact me at: social@chapterg.org or phone me at (859) Ride Safe! 8 Page 8 March 2018 Couple of the Year Report Our year as Chapter Couple of the Year has gotten off to a great start. We attended the District Operations Meeting in Shelbyville on Saturday, January 27 th. This was a very informative meeting. We got to learn what was going to take place for the year. We also got to meet the other COY couples and many members of other Chapters. We won the draw to see which couple starts off with the mascot. We got the privilege of naming the mascot. The name we chose was Lucky. Lucky for two reasons, one because we won the mascot and the other reason is that we are lucky to have such an awesome Chapter to be a part of. On February 3 rd, we traveled back to Shelbyville to attend Chapter H's meeting and to have dinner with the group. This was certainly a fun time with this Chapter and with our own Chapter members who also attended the meeting. At our February gathering, COY from Chapter A from Louisville got Lucky the mascot. Guess that means that we will be going to their meeting on March 10 th. If you get a chance to attend one of the other Chapter meetings, do so. It is fun to see what other Chapters have going on in their meetings and what events they have planned. We also attended the January (Tousey House) and February (Dominic) dinner rides and as always everyone had a great time and great food. We have always said the more involved you get, the more fun you will have. So check out that great new ride schedule that Chuck and Judy Norris have put together and plan on participating in as many as your schedule will allow. We are sure you will have a great time! As you can see we have been busy these past two months and had a lot of fun. Can't wait for the riding season to officially begin. Steve & Babette Centner, COY
Page 9 March 2018 For Sale Editor s Notes Renzo and I would like to say thank you for all the cards, s, thoughts and prayers that Chapter G has been sending our way. Every correspondence received is like a little drop of sunshine on a very dark time in our lives. We feel the love that you send and are deeply grateful for such good friends and wonderful people. As always, Chapter G rocks!
Page 10 March 2018 Ride Coordinator Report As February comes to an end we all look forward to the weather getting warmer and getting out of our cages. With a snowy messy day we had a very good turnout at the Dinner ride at Dominic s with 25 signed up. We lost one to not feeling well. Luanne joined us and had to drive herself after recent knee surgery and is doing very well. March is approaching and we will be doing Dinner at Barleycorn s in Lakeside Park. We meet March 17 at 5PM. This is a triple event day. St.Patricks day, Dinner, and March Madness. Make sure you check the web page. There have been changes since last month. 11 Page 11 March 2018 Hysterical Historical Highlights Congratulations to our members who are celebrating their March Chapter G anniversaries! Well here we are loving our newest home right here at Dave and Busters, And I must say from all appearances and comments it s working like gangbusters! For the food is good and the servers are great and G attendance is expanding, Though changing locations can often be chaotic, I think we nailed a perfect landing! And keeping on a positive note let s salute some members for whom we are thankful, For these folks not only love to ride, but are ready and waiting with their tankful. So we ll start way back with Bill and Barb Conrad, who ve been members since 1987, To ride in this beautiful country for thirty-one years Wow! That sounds like heaven! Then we were blessed by our own Doc Baker who joined the G in the year 2001, For he s not only a big hearted and compassionate guy but he s also a lot of fun! Then our blessings continued when three years later in March of 2004, When a sweet couple, Whitey and Judie Howard strolled through our chapter door! Then in 2005 we gained Jesse and Joyce Baker and two years after that, Mike King, We could hardly wait to see who else in the future, our lucky month of March would bring! But we didn t have to wait long, for it was in 09, when the Artmayer s came our way, And they have been actively involved in Chapter G ever since that very first day! Now, if by some chance, you don t know who Rick and Kim are, I ll offer some assistance, By describing Kim so you ll easily recognize her whether up close or from a distance. She wears a helmet, jacket, boots, long pants, and gloves every day of her life, Why? You asked well the answer is simple it s because she is Rick s wife! Now Rick wears all that too, but adds some buttons, which makes some think he s a ham, For the one on his lapel proudly announces This button isn t funny but I am! And, of course, he has another that proclaims the truth it s not simply idle talk, For it states in large, bold, red font I Kill It when it comes to Knock, Knock! And then we acquired Wilber and Patricia Wills, in the year two thousand thirteen, Which just confirms that the G is still on a great roll if you know what I mean. Now I ll close by sharing Rick s favorite button which is basically about Goldwingers, And simply says The world is filled with biker dudes but I m the only one with zingers!
