At last we are in McGivney Hall, the new permanent home for Council It was an honor to preside over our first Council business meeting on September 1. And we can all take pride in the facility. To get here, there were a number of twists and turns along the way. While it didn t exactly end up as we all had expected in the early stages, we can all relax now and thank God for the blessings of our new home. The fact that we are now able to invest funds which we would have spent, creating a much larger treasury that allows us to accomplish many great charitable works in the future, is an added blessing. As I looked out at the assembled membership last Thursday, it was virtually impossible to find any Knights whom had not contributed much over the last few weeks preparing the Parish Center and McGivney Hall. The Parish thanks you and I thank you for the hours of hard work spent bringing us to this day. Now that we have the new Hall, let s fill it up. Membership is always a hot topic and as I committed to you at our meeting, we will make Star Council this year. We did not qualify the last two Fraternal Years because it was necessary to clean house and purge the records of many inactive, nonpaying members who were a drain on our Council resources for several years. Not an easy, nor a fun task, but PGK Paul headed the team that now has us current and I plan to keep it that way. We have several opportunities to build our membership. Starting next weekend, September 10-11, the new Parish Information Table project gets underway. Each weekend, there will be a team of two people at the Information Desk in the Bethany Narthex for 10 minutes before and after every Mass. Their primary purpose is to be of assistance to any parishioner or newcomer who may have questions about parish organizations, service times, etc. The Knights of Columbus will

be responsible for staffing this table once a month on the second weekend. I have sent out a request for this coming weekend s staffing and then we will do a full schedule which everyone can fill in as to when they would be willing to help. With our large membership, and the fact each team only needs to do one Mass on those Sundays, the demand is not excessive. Since many of us are Ushers and/or Eucharistic Ministers, it makes sense to cover the table at one s normally assigned Mass. The Ladies Auxiliary will also be participating on the same weekend so it seems natural that our wives would join us for that brief assignment. And the best part is that we will be able to introduce the Knights of Columbus to everyone who stops at the table. What a great recruiting opportunity. Brother Dave Bruggeman is getting more information brochures printed to hand out at that table. A more specific recruiting opportunity will happen later this month on September 24-25, which is the Stewardship Commission Recruiting Drive weekend. We will be making pulpit presentations at all the Masses, in the company of our wives who will be there in support of the Ladies Auxiliary. We ll be able to meet and greet parishioners after each of the Masses at which we present and provide more information. Be sure to have lots of Form 100s at your disposal. Dave Bruggeman announced at our Business Meeting that we were going to abandon the bi-monthly schedule Info Night. It has been a frustration for those who always make a point of being on hand and despite interested men s promises to be there, more often than not, the evenings have been a waste. From now on as we aggressively identify a potential Knight, Dave will arrange a one on one information session. Now that we have McGivney Hall, we can do that more easily there or we can go to that person s home. Ideally, we will be able to schedule more than one candidate at a time. But we MUST step up our recruiting efforts. We often say, Just ask one guy at your Mass of choice if he has ever thought of being a Knight. Now is the time to do that. Carry an information brochure with you and if there is a flicker of interest, get the contact information and get that to me and to Dave. If you know the person, stay in touch with him on this and help us bring him home. I had such a conversation with a friend this past Sunday after the 7:30 Mass and I think he s ready to join. Just imagine if our regular core group of 50 to 60 Knights did that just one time a month how we could grow! I am challenging each of you to pick out a person of interest at the next Mass you attend and try your pitch". You might be surprised at how successful you might be. Pete Maurer just received an award pin from the Diocese recognizing his recruiting efforts this past year, bringing in three new members. Shame on the rest of us, myself included, for letting three be the awarded amount! And last, but not least, we have another Passbook sales event on September 10-11, and we should always take advantage of the interaction with the parishioners to tout our successes and the many benefits of being a Knight. Vivat Jesus Ron Schoof Grand Knight Page 2

The Grand Unwrapping The "Grand Unwrapping Crew" hard at work at McGivney Hall... kneeling in front is Leonard Stanislav, who specialized in cutting off the plastic wrappings from the legs, being careful not to scratch the metal. Standing behind him is Pete Maurer, who "sat down on the job" while he unwrapped his chairs. Next to him is Larry Sloan, who perfected a method for removing all the wrappings. Standing to the rear is Rudy Profaizer, the "ex-officio" crew chief, who got the four of us together at the request of Will Alt (not shown). In addition to doing his own unwrapping, Rudy was also the official "chair mover", taking them from the work area to the main storage area. All in all, the crew spent the better part of three hours on the task. So when you, fellow Brother Knights, take a seat in these new chairs, give thanks to the guys who "unwrapped" them for you! Just one of the many boxes of trash that resulted from the "grand unwrapping" of the new chairs for St. Mark's. Each chair had a plastic cover over the back, a cardboard protective cover on the seat bottom, and the legs and back support arms were wrapped in a "plastic-like" material. And it all had to be taken off... and then the cardboard was recycled... as any good "green" parish would do. Chairs, chairs, and more chairs... and they all had to be unwrapped, one at a time. Answering the call, several members of Council 6065 met at the soonto-be-open McGivney Hall to assist in the "unwrapping". The parish bought about 500 chairs... and here are a couple hundred of them. 4 New Parish Center Blessing/Dedication Father Cliff (center) leads the parish in prayers during the Blessing and Dedication ceremony for the new St. Mark's Parish Center. Flanking Father Cliff are Deacon Gregg Kahrs and Deacon Sid Little, while the Color Corps, under the command of Bill Ptacek (in the green cape and chapeau) stand at attention. The Boy Scouts raise the flags at the dedication ceremony of the new St. Mark's Parish Center. The center flag is the Papal Flag, which was a gift from Assembly 2266 to honor the occasion. The Texas State flag is on the way up to form the trio of flags that will fly proudly in front of our new building. Father Cliff is surrounded by the Christopher Columbus Assembly Color Corps during the Blessing and Dedication ceremony for the new St. Mark's Parish Center on Aug. 27th. Page 4

Assembly 2266 and Councils Visit Greet the Troops at DFW On August 27th, Sir Knights and other Knights and family members from the Assembly and some of our Councils made a trip to DFW airport to greet the troops leaving the US. The troops were heading back overseas and going back to Iraq and Afghanistan after two weeks' R&R. Eighteen Knights and family members took part in thanking them for their service to our country and assuring them of our prayers. We gave out water, juice, crackers, cookies, gum, beef jerky, and candy donated by Assembly We also presented some of the troops cigars donated by Rick Baldelli of Two Brothers Cigars in Plano. Since the DFW Airport USO opened in 2004, the USO has welcomed and hosted over one million service members. This was our quarterly visit to DFW Airport to greet the troops. Our next visit will be on Saturday, December 3, 21 (Gate B - 15). Included in our group were three generations of one family Chuck Neubecker (former US Army), Greg Neubecker (former US Navy), Danny Neubecker (future US ---), Thomas Neubecker (future US ---)... both young boys will certainly keep the Neubecker name on the military rolls of honor. Army sergeants Cralley and Anderson are making sure that both Danny and Thomas Neubecker learn the proper way to stand at attention. Well, since it was a "casual setting", the two "young troopers" were cut a little slack, since the Army guys didn't want to come down too harshly on their potential Navy allies. Danny and Thomas are the grandsons of Sir Knight Chuck Neubecker. A contingent of Knights and family members gathered to greet the troops at DFW on Aug. 27th. Kneeling in the front row is Chuck Neubecker with his son, Greg, and two grandsons (Danny and Thomas). Greg served in the US Navy, hence the boys are attired in Navy shirts. Page 7

Frank McElligott named Knight of the Month for August Frank McElligott (right) was honored as Knight of the Month for August and received a certificate from GK Ron Schoof at the August business meeting. Frank was recognized for his participation in many Council events, most recently as chairman of the Family Picnic in July. Frank has also served as Community Chairman for several years. Pete Maurer, right, receives a leather-bound Holy Bible from Membership Chairman Dave Bruggeman, in recognition of his recruiting the most new members to Council 6065 during the "contest period". Todd Bartz (left) receives a framed certificate from GK Ron Schoof in recognition of his participation on the First Degree Team. The award was presented by the State Council for Todd's work on the Degree Team for the Northern District. Page 8

Rudy Profaizer (right) receives his Honorary Lifetime Membership card from GK Ron Schoof. Rudy is a charter member of Council 6065, since its formation in April, Rudy has served our Council with distinction for all of those years and currently is the Historian of the Council as well as being Passbook Sales Chairman and the publisher of the Directory. He is also the first recipient of the Cardinal Medeiros Award from Council Ben Preboy (right) receives his PGK medallion from PGK Paul Krusac, in recognition of Ben's service as Grand Knight of our Council in the fraternal year. Paul Krusac shows the members the plaque he created to honor the Past Grand Knights of Council Each PGK is listed with a name plate and the year(s) served. Dave Bruggeman (right) is presented his plaque honoring him as recipient of the Bishop Farrell Passion Award. GK Ron Schoof made the presentation at the August business meeting since Dave was unable to attend the Awards' Banquet in June. Dave was cited for his leadership as Membership Director for the past year, during which time the Council has seen a steady rise in new Brother Knights. Page 9

Lloyd Hasley named Knight of the Month for September Lloyd Hasley (right) receives the Knight of the Month award for August from GK Ron Schoof. Lloyd was cited for his work on various committees as well as being an officer (Warden) of our Council. Lloyd has been active in our Council since his earliest days, as noted by the fact that he is the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award. Ron Schoof addresses the Council from the podium at our first-ever meeting in McGivney Hall. A packed house enjoyed our new "home" and we look forward to many more meetings in this superb facility. Father James Yamauchi (left) receives a "Hike for Life" T-shirt from Pro-Life Chairman Randy LeGrand (right) as GK Ron Schoof looks on. Page 10

GK Ron Schoof addresses the Council at the first business meeting held in McGivney Hall. Shown (l-r) are Trustees Greg Fisher, Paul Krusac, and Phil Reinkemeyer. Treasurer Israel DeLaRosa is at the right end of the table. To the GK's left are Chancellor Mark Peacock and District Deputy Danny Kendall. And if you really look closely and recognize some of your Brother Knights from the backs of their heads, you will see (from the left) Michael Brennan, Don Lauterbach (just barely), Pat Haney, Len Hilliard (just a bit of him as well), and Bill Ptacek, who is sitting in the seat made famous by sportscaster Bob Uecker---"front row, center"! Father James holds a set of "customized coasters" that were a gift to him from Council at All Saints. The coasters depict the names of Father James and the fellow priests who were ordained with him. It was remarked that he could use them while at the Vatican pursuing his studies, perhaps when the Pope paid an unexpected visit. Page 11

Father James addressed the Council at our first meeting in McGivney Hall and thanked us for the support we gave him during his journey to priesthood. Seen listening are (l-r) Phil Reinkemeyer, Israel DeLaRosa, Ron Schoof, Mark Peacock, Danny Kendall, and Steve Michlik. Don Lauterbach and Bill Ptacek (l-r) are also seen looking and listening. Payton and his wife, Judy, are active in all aspects of our Council and parish, from vocations to EM's. GK Ron Schoof made the presentation at the August business meeting. Father James Yamauchi receives a certificate honoring his family as our Council's Family of the Month for September. GK Ron Schoof made the presentation, adding the Father James' family has been long-time members of St. Mark's parish and the family is very active in many areas. Father James' younger brother, John Peter, is an altar server, while his parents, Brent and Jackie are deeply involved in parish life. Page 14

Guadalupe Radio Network Diane Xavier was our guest speaker at the Ladies Auxiliary August meeting. She spoke to us about the history and purpose of the Guadalupe Radio Network. She has been volunteering at 910 AM Guadalupe Radio for the past 4 years with plans to become a full time employee and ambassador with the station in the near future. In 1998, Pope John Paul II called the laity to be involved in The New Springtime of Evangelization by using all forms of media. Mother Angelica of EWTN answered with the announcement that she would give free radio programming to laity who bought radio Stations. The La Promesa Foundation that built the Guadalupe Resource Center answered the call. In July of 2000, their first station, KLPF 1150 AM, went on the air with Catholic Radio in West Texas. The positive impact on the community was so amazing that within 10 years the Guadalupe Radio Network has grown to 12 stations in Texas, one in Washington D.C. and one in New Mexico. The mission of Catholic Radio is to assist in drawing all people to the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and His Church in full accord with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. The Guadalupe Radio Network reaches out to people everywhere day and night. They also stream live on the Internet worldwide. EWTN Television provides many of the same programs they broadcast on TV to the Guadalupe Radio Network. Catholics everywhere and even Protestants have chosen to begin their journey home to the Catholic Church as a result of listening to Catholic Radio. Several of our members are enthusiastic listeners. They encouraged all of us the next time you are in your car or just at home to turn on the radio and tune in to 910 AM WMET Guadalupe Radio. You won t be disappointed.
