Our thanks and appreciation go out to PGK, Brother Mark Clemente pictured below, for his dedication and efforts which inspired our Brothers to achieve this distinguished council award for service to our families, parish and community. Welcoming a New Brother to Council It was indeed a great ceremony of conferring the 1st Degree at Church of the Nativity in Burke, VA for our new Brother James Senson. The strength I get out these Exemplifications is powerful! When I get into moments of feeling alone, times like this in community sends a message to me on what sacrifice means to keep our Council together! The road will always be long and bumpy... as the song goes; "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother!" This photo shows Brother James and I at the Church of Nativity for the 1st Degree Exemplification. 2 St. John The Beloved, McLean, VA Volume 2 Issue 3 October 24, 2016 Honor Flight Network Our Brother Thomas Labouche, and DGK, in the photo below, was part of Honor Flight of 111 for Veterans that came in from Chicago on September 7th. What a great tribute in which to participate! The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America s veterans for all their sacrifices. The network transports our veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation and as a culturally diverse, free society. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out. Lunch at Edward Douglas White Council 2473, Arlington The weekend of 14 October I had the Honor to accompany the Brownies from Troop 2902 in welcoming the Veterans and to serve dinner to these amazing Heros! The Edward Douglass White (EDW) Council 2473 hosts World War II veterans from anywhere in the country who travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial, the Arlington National Cemetery, and other landmarks in the Washington, D.C. and Arlington. The EDW council provides lunch or dinner to the veterans and their escorts as well as a positive-filled atmosphere that concludes with Taps being performed live by a bugler from Bugles Across America. Through social media, the EDW council engages the community to have neighborhood families, JROTC units, and scouts assist with meal service and clean up and participate in a receiving line to welcome the veterans. 3 40 Days For Life We have had a pretty good showing from the Knights on Thursdays to support the 40 Days for Life Campaign with our appointed time of praying in Falls Church! This note is from Andrea DelVeccio: "The amazing and effective 40 Days for Life Campaign has begun. Our parish is scheduled to pray on Thursdays at the Falls Church abortion mill, 900 S. Washington St., Falls Church, Va. The prayer schedule is set up on an hourly basis. Parishioners can sign up to pray for an hour or more from 7am until 8pm. Andrea DelVecchio Fall Festival Brothers I am truly humbled by your sacrificing personable time to perfect our BBQ Smoke-out for our Fall Festival. Thanks to the Brothers that supported time slots during the smoke, and Brother Admiral for bailing me out in time of need... love ya! As I was walking around during the Festival and talking to our extended family, I received words of much appreciation and gratitude on the taste of everything that was smoked! As Guy Fieri would put it on Diners, Dives and Drives... "the smoke out is Gangsta--This is out of Bounds, Off the Hook... Father's smoke is riding the bus to flavor town!" 4 I have to give a shout out to Robert Crnkovich (Jr) and his bud that came out at 0100 hours and stayed with through the afternoon... Awesome! Smoke Commander Br. BB, well thanks for the TV and sounds... and a place for some to crash a bit! Yes BB, I threw you under the bus, or RV! Kidding aside, thank you too! We had a great crowd at midnight with good conversation, spirits and it was a pleasure to meet many new faces like Mike Turk! I was looking for a membership drive during the Festivities, however I think we picked up 3 possibilities that night around the smoke... they thought is great to see how we gathered, ready to serve and we all enjoyed the moment of the unique gathering! It was also a great moment for our recruitment/ membership efforts, we made many good contacts this weekend. I can not forget the Bothers that came to help out Thursday before in support of Brother JD who did an awesome job in coordination to make things happen. Sister Cathy, what a stellar partner! If anything JD, Cathy Rocks!!! You both took on a great challenge and it was a huge success; hats off to your team... it was beautiful to see the work in play! Until the next time, the 1st weekend of November, the smoke is on! Fraternally, Lloyd Miller - Grand Knight Deputy Grand Knight s Corner Brothers, There is a way to answer the call of Father Al- Bazi who lectured at St. John The Beloved earlier this May concerning the tragic fate of Iraqi Christians. He called on us to pray for them and, when possible, to help them stay in their country, free to practice their faith. Therefore, let me invite you to join me, in charity and in spirit, as I run the Washington Marathon on Oct. 30th. This will be in support of the following project to alleviating their suffering: and warmest thanks for those who are already onboard. Vivat Jesus! 5 From The Chancellor Greetings, Brother Knights. Over the past few weeks I ve had the pleasure to meet Supreme Knight of our order, Carl Anderson, who has spent the past several years speaking eloquently, almost continuously, to raise awareness of the Christian genocide and persecution taking place largely in the Middle East. Almost a day does not go by without a report of Christians choosing death over publicly converting to Islam or pledging allegiance to the Islamic terrorist group ISIS and those countries encouraging if not enabling their atrocities. But Grand Knight Anderson and the Knights of Columbus likewise have also been focusing for some time on the persecution of the Christian faith particularly the Catholic faith here in the United States, evident in the Obama Administration s efforts to force Catholic health care institutions to perform abortions, if not then offer abortifacients and artificial birth control or the Catholic Church overall to offer its employees health care plans that cover the costs of abortions and artificial birth control. The effort to intimidate and force Catholics out of the public square is real and growing. And it will require all of us to redouble efforts to support our Faith and speak the Truth, whether in front of an abortion clinic in Falls Church, in front of the Supreme Court, or in the voter booth. Ours is not unlike the position St. Thomas More faced several centuries ago, which is one reason the Knights of Columbus and its St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington have more than 60 relics and artifacts of St. Thomas More on exhibit now through December. Visit the Shrine and bring your families to God s Servant First: The Life and Legacy of Thomas More, and take a few minutes afterward to say a Novena for strength in the face of trials while in the shrines lovely chapel.
