Mainsail Knights of Columbus of St. Mark Parish, Plano Texas Council 6065 Mourns Loss of Brother Knight Henry Marcoux The shutter has clicked for the final time for our beloved Brother Knight Henry Marcoux, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer on May 29th after a valiant struggle against the ravages of this dreadful disease. Henry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lucille, and his daughter, Nicole Ballard and her husband, Joe; and son Justin and his wife, Kelly, and grandson, Tyler. Henry Raymond Marcoux was 62 and was born in Pawtucket, R.I. After graduating from high school in 1965, Henry enlisted in the US Army and became a communications specialist. His duty assignment was --- and remember, guys, this is the Vietnam era and somebody has to do the hard jobs--- FORT SHAFTER, HAWAII. With his top secret clearance, Spec.5 Marcoux was involved in "message transmissions between the war zone and the Pentagon", and if you need to know any more information than that, you'll have to have a top secret clearance as well. Suffice to say, Henry performed his duties with extreme precision and "mustered" out of the Army in 1968, returning to Rhode Island to attend Bryant College, where he attained a business degree. While at Bryant, Henry worked for Balfour Company, which we all know as the "ring company". With his college degree in hand in 1974, Balfour asked Henry, now married, to transfer to Dallas as their General Manager. Dallas' gain was Rhode Island's loss as the Marcoux family moved to Texas in December, Henry spent a few more years with Balfour, then was hired by a small packaging company as their General Manager... and then came his "mid-life" career change. Henry went to a technical college to earn a degree in computer networking; obviously seeing the handwriting on the wall at the advent of the "computer age". Armed with this new knowledge and a degree, Henry was hired by Perot Systems in 1995, where he stayed until his retirement in early His job with Perot took him "all over the place" and it wasn't until he retired that he became a Knight of Columbus at Council He quickly became an active member of the Knights of Columbus and "got the calling" to become our Council's full-time photographer in 2007, stepping into the shoes of Clinton Gantt. Actually Henry was sort of "drafted" to fill the spot, since Brother Clint had to slow down because of health issues and several others as a "group" could not keep up the picture stream that Clinton had started. Henry's first pictures for us were with Lucille's digital camera, but it wasn't long before he "upgraded" to an even fancier model. Fortunately for Council 6065, Henry's new hobby became photography...and the rest is history.

Brother Henry became as ubiquitous as McDonalds, he was EVERYWHERE there was a Council function, camera in hand and ready to snap away. At times the joking comment might include a question to him as to whether he was "going to run out of film?", but thanks to the digital age, the answer was always a cheerful "NO!" Henry's outstanding efforts in this area earned him the Council's eternal thanks and the Outstanding Service and Distinction Award, which was presented to him at our 2008 Awards' Dinner. Henry's pictures of our Brother Knights appeared in area papers and KC publications on a regular basis and they were always accompanied by a caption explaining "who was doing what, when, where, and why". To complete the pictorial story, Henry would present copies of these photographs to the Brother Knights involved at the following Council meetings, a nice touch so that each of us could share the "Kodak Moment". Henry Marcoux's life was celebrated with a funeral Mass at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church on June 5th, followed by interment at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas. It has been reported that Henry is now busy in Heaven, taking pictures up there, asking God to "smile" and the Holy Spirit to "look this way, please". We miss you and love you, Henry! Brother Knight Henry Marcoux, who passed away on May 29th, is pictured here with his grandson, Tyler, and wife, Lucille, celebrating the Christmas season in Henry was on the road to recovery from his cancer at this time.

This page is intentionally left blank in honor of our departed Brother Knight, Henry Marcoux. We are keeping it open for any pictures that Henry might want to send down to us.

Officers Take Oaths to Lead Council 6065 Paul Krusac led the newly elected slate of officers for Council 6065 as they took their oaths of office during the annual Officers' Installation and Awards Dinner, which was held Saturday, June 20th, at the Southfork Hotel. 8 Grand Knight s Message, Paul Krusac, GK Brothers, I would like to thank each of you for the faith and trust you have shown in me by electing me Grand Knight. I am trying to reinstitute a tradition that has been missing for a while a monthly synopsis of what has happened and what is planned in the Council, written by the Grand Knight. We have had both good and bad in our Council during the past month. The good is the election and installation of new officers, who will continue to lead us in a way to keep this Council the best in the Dallas Diocese. The bad is the untimely loss of our brother and friend, Henry Marcoux. Although Henry belonged to the Knights for just a few years, he was respected and looked up to by everyone in the Council. Please see our tribute regarding Henry elsewhere in this issue of the Mainsail. I personally will miss his smiling face and quick wit, most often behind his camera. Henry was truly a Knight s Knight. Ryan Baula, a new 1st degree Knight, volunteered at his FIRST meeting to become our new Council photographer. Ryan, may Henry guide you as you follow in his footsteps. Paul Krusac, GK At the Officer Installation and Awards Dinner, I said the following during my acceptance speech: I promise to do all that I can to continue the expansion and good reputation of our Council. Our Council is looked upon by other councils as one of the best in the Dallas Diocese and I fully intend to represent you to the best of my abilities. For the incoming officers, I challenge all of us to strive to improve communications within the Council and to improve our visibility within the parish, so as to increase our membership especially in the non-anglo communities. With this kind of diversification within our Council, we can more fully meet the challenge given to us as Knights to Support Our Priests. I ask all members of the Council to give me the support necessary to be a successful Grand Knight. A leader cannot accomplish anything alone he must have the support of those in his organization. You can rest assured that I will be asking for your expertise and guidance

in whatever challenges face the Council. I have been in several councils in my 48 years with the Knights, but it wasn t until I came here to the Santa Maria Council that I really began to feel at home with the Knights. We have a great Council! For the month of July, we have our annual summer picnic in conjunction with our Brother Knights of Lumen Christi Council at All Saints on Saturday, July 11. This will most likely be the last picnic we have at the lake house of Bill Fix, Past Grand Knight of Lumen Christi, as he is in the process of selling his home on Cedar Creek Lake. If anyone is interested in attending the picnic, please call Dale Hearst at Dale is coordinating the picnic for our Council. We also are having a blood drive to help replenish our credits at Carter Blood Care. Many of you are unaware that a brother in another council was in dire need of blood credits. His wife had been seriously ill before her death and used over 300 units of blood during the procedures trying to save her life. His council asked all other councils to help if possible. We at 6065 took up the challenge and donated 100 credits to the family. We had over 150 credits available to us but didn t want to deplete our entire bank. Other councils are following suit in donating blood credits but, as usual, we were the first and donated the most. I thank all who participate in the blood drives. We will continue to provide security at Holy Hour adorations in the near future. Fr. Cliff says that he would like us to continue as we are now until at least the Narthex renovation is completed. Another thing we need to begin planning includes a new degree team so that we can offer First Degree Ceremonies at our Council. If you are interested in being part of this team, please contact me. We need a Degree Team Captain, as well as all other degree officers. Thank you again for being members of Council Continue watching the Knights Corner in the Sunday bulletins for up-to-date information on what is happening in our Council. Vivat Jesus!

Mike Bernatis Named Knight of the Year Mike Bernatis was named "Knight of the Year" for Council 6065 during the awards presentation at the annual Officers' Installation and Awards Dinner, which was held Saturday, June 20th, at the Southfork Hotel. The honor, which was presented by outgoing Grand Knight Phil Reinkemeyer, cited Mike's outstanding service to the Council during the past fraternal year, in which he not only served an "extended term" as Financial Secretary, but also for his involvement in countless projects and activities. His winning was a very popular choice among those present, as Mike's cheerful and positive attitude has always been an inspiration to his fellow Brother Knights. Don Balvin received the prestigious Cardinal Medeiros Fellow Award in recognition for his tireless work in the Council and especially for his devotion to the "Sick and Vigil Committee", which he has headed for years. The Cardinal Medeiros Fellow is not given out on an annual basis, but only under "special circumstances", which makes it all the more meaningful and Brother Knight Don Balvin is a most worthy recipient. The Family of the Year Award went to Ron and Marilyn Ackerman for their efforts in leading the Friday Fish Frys and numerous other projects. Will Alt was named as the Msgr. Smyth Leadership Award winner and Pat Haney received the Outstanding Service and Distinction Award. The Bishop Farrell Passion Award was awarded to the late Henry Marcoux, who, until his recent death after a lengthy battle with cancer, could be seen at almost every Council function, camera in hand. The Cardinal DiNardo Right for Life Award was presented to Randy LeGrand, who, along with his wife, Marie, was a guiding force in our Council's fight to end abortion and "give life a chance". All of the above awards were announced at the dinner, which again was a huge success thanks to the leadership of committee chairman Jamie Scarbrough; and the Council thanks him and his wife, Gigi, and all those who helped make the evening a memorable event. 11 Assembly 2266 and Councils Visit to DFW Airport On June 6 th (the 65 th anniversary of D Day ) Sir Knights of two assemblies and many other Knights and families from North Texas Councils made a trip to DFW airport to greet the troops. The troops, who numbered around 150, were leaving the US after 2 weeks R&R, going back to Iraq and Afghanistan. The troops represented the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Twenty Knights and family members took part. We gave out bottled water, juice, crackers, cookies, and candy donated by Assembly 2266 and the All Saints Council. Assembly 3004 was also represented. Councils represented were 6065, 9903, 11293, 12480, and A very generous gift of cigars was provided by Two Brothers Cigars, located in downtown Plano. This visit was a very special one since it included a tour of the USO Lounge in the Secured area to see some of the gifts North Texas Knights of Columbus have provided to the USO the coin display cases, the Menu board, and the flag display cases. The DFW USO typically provides hospitality to about 350 service personnel and their family members at their Center every day. In 2008 they served 166,850 guests; the total served since the DFW USO doors opened in 2004 is over 650,000 guests. The USO is always looking for more volunteers. A question often asked is, What do we do with the gifts we bring that are not immediately used? We leave them with the USO to give out later. Due to the large number of troops our surplus supplies are gone quickly. This was our quarterly visit to DFW airport to greet the troops. Our next visit will be on August 29, Mark your calendars.

Jack Hagan Masters his second degree So, how do we address him now? "Master-Master" Jack or "Double-Master" Jack or simply "Jack"? That is the question going around the Jack Hagan household as our Brother Knight completed a seven-year quest to attain his second Masters' Degree. According to his lovely, charming, and equally brilliant wife, Diane, Jack had a mid-life "change of interest" and realized he had an ever-growing fascination with computers and wanted to "expand" his knowledge base. So Jack became "Joe College" once again and headed off to UTD to pursue his academic quest. After seven years of late nights spent reading, studying, and working on projects, the "pinnacle was peaked" and Jack passed his "final" FINAL and will graduate with a Masters in Computer Science from the aforementioned university. And thus we now have the "Double-Master" Jack, who adds this degree to his Masters in Electrical Engineering, which he obtained from Wichita State University after getting his undergraduate degree from Kansas University. Brother Jack has been in the Council for many years and involved in countless activities, one of which he now is even more "eminently" qualified to head- The Science Fair Project! His two teenage children, Matt and Michelle, have also been involved in this activity as well as being Altar Servers at St. Mark's. And finally, Diane has the penultimate question: "Jack, now that you have "mastered" this degree, can you find some time to "master" a couple of "house projects"? The Council extends its congratulations to "Master Jack"! Jack and Diane Hagan

Message from Will Alt A call to Service: Perhaps you've read about it in the St. Mark Church bulletin, but neglected to respond to this call to service and ministry as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council. As several seasoned members are "retiring" from Pastoral Council we are looking to expand this advisory and oversight board from nine to twelve members. Generally a 3-year service commitment is desired and who couldn t use another meeting each month. Please contact me if you or your wife (or both) are interested or if you can provide the name of another parishioner or brother Knight you feel could add value to this parish leadership organization. No prior experience necessary. What a better way to answer the call to Stewardship than a direct-line to the Pastor and active involvement in Parish matters. Feel free to contact me for more information. Candidates will be asked to attend a "meet and greet" (info) session with the Pastoral Council on July 16th. Will Alt Pastoral Council Recruitment Coordinator waalt@verizon.net PS: Any questions, concerns or comments about the Parish or its operations, can be directed to me or any other council member. At each monthly meeting we have a segment of our meeting called "Views from the Pews" at which time concerns, comments, questions and feedback from parishioners are discussed with the Pastor and Parish Manager. Will Alt is looking for someone with a working knowledge of Corel's Paint Shop Pro photo editing software. Holy Hour Set for July 3rd July third is the first Friday of the month and as usual the Knights of Council #6065 will post for their hour of Adoration with the Blessed Sacrament at 10:00 PM in the Chapel. Brothers and their families are invited and encouraged to congregate outside the chapel prior to our 10PM hour and process in as a group. The hour consists of silent adoration, the rosary, and prayer as a group. Masses are also held at 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM if you are unable to make the hour of Adoration. Otherwise, Brother Knights are encouraged to find time to pray on their own. Council Picnic set for July 11 The annual KC Family Picnic again will be held at Cedar Creek Lake, starting at "midmorning" on Saturday, July 11th, according to project chairman Dale Hearst. This year the event will again be a "dual-affair" as the Santa Maria Council (us) and the Lumen Christi Council (the other good guys) will join talents to present the picnic. Last-minute sign ups will be possible at our July business meeting or by calling Dale at or ing him at dalehearst@cs.com. Directions to the location are in the June Mainsail. This is always a fun-filled event and the kids will have a grand time...and so will you. So load up the family van (or SUV) or join in with another Council member and head down to the lake. For more details, please refer to the June Mainsail or contact Dale. You will be glad you did!!! Has your contact info changed? 14 Santa Maria Council presents Certificate to Council 6048 in The Philippines Paul Krusac (left) and Phil Reinkemeyer hold a certificate/gift that is being presented to Council #6048, in Cabatuan, The Philippines. This is an idea brought to us by Brother Dave Bruggeman, who was a member of the Philippine Council a few years ago. This Certificate has the Lords Prayer, in their dialect, with the seals of both Councils. We know that this will hold a place of honor in their Council Hall. We must remember our Brother Knights from the few other countries around the world.
