Lumen Christi Council s newest members are Doug Burnside, Fr. Peter Chinnappan, Mike Havel and Paul Lyons. Please congratulate these new members and make them feel welcome at our next meeting. Officially, the Council s membership stands at 98 members. We expected to welcome an additional five members who were scheduled to be exemplified in the First Degree on August 31. Unfortunately, the host of this First Degree Exemplification, Council #11716 at Prince of Peace had to cancel the ceremony due to outside factors. We look forward to welcoming these five and the remaining three candidates who were unable to commit to an August First Degree ceremony into our Council in September. The membership committee is moving forward (see the new Recruitment Corner column herein) with plans to schedule information nights in an effort to recruit each of the 17 prospects remaining on the committee s prospect list. The good news is that we have welcomed 10 new members since the April Blitz. The bad news is that we haven t added any new prospects to our list since the April Blitz. Please remember that new member recruiting and member retention is the responsibility of each and every Knight. Let us know if you know of qualified Catholic men who you believe would make good Knights. If you have an interest in membership, recruiting, admission or retention please contact John Poston, Membership Director, at (972) or jposton@rpkco.com. Pictured at left in the sanctuary of St. Joseph s church in Richardson after the August 24 th exemplification ceremonies are (L-R) Membership Director John Poston, new members Paul Lyons, Mike Havel, and Fr. Peter Chinnappan, Financial Secretary Rudy Arciniega, Deputy Grand Knight Chris Diaz and new member Doug Burnside.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 2 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE BY BILL FOX, GRAND KNIGHT As we look in horror at the damage and hardship caused by Hurricane Katrina, let us keep all of the people of this catastrophe in our prayers. I'm sure we will be called upon to provide relief and support, financial and otherwise, in the days and weeks to come. I know we will respond as Knights always do when called upon for help; however, we don't know as yet what we will be called to do and what help will be asked of us. We will be ready. In light of the above, our projects may seem to be trivial but they are not. We must carry on and support the two big events scheduled for September - the Plano Balloon Fest and the All Saints Fall Festival. Tim Durkin will pass out the sign-up sheet at the next meeting for the Balloon Festival and Tom Owan will handle the All Saints Fall Festival. As for the Balloon Fest, we have an outstanding location for our booth and hopefully we can make a nice profit, which will be put to immediate use for hurricane victims. We will need a host of volunteers to pull this off, so when the sign up sheet comes around don't be bashful. Recruiting - John Poston is doing a great job in lining up new members. We hoped to have over 100 by the next meeting and would have done so if the First Degree Ceremony had not been called off. Remember, don't leave it all up to John. Everybody is a recruiter and we are looking to each of you to bring in a new member. Is that too much to ask? You must have at least one friend, so ask him. That's all for now. Looking forward to seeing you at the September 7th meeting and be sure to keep the hurricane victims in your prayers. God Bless Bill Fox Grand Knight grandknight@lumenchristikc.org fox_w@sbcglobal.net ON SCHEDULE AT THE BUSINESS MEETING MEETING NOTES At the August business meeting we reviewed plans for the Plano Balloon Festival and upcoming Passbook Sales. The Council's involvement at the Fall Festival was discussed, including the holding of our Soccer Challenge. At the September business meeting we will be discussing, among other things, final plans for the Plano Balloon Festival and the Fall Festival. We will also be discussing a proposed change to our meeting nights. Please remember that we have a guest speaker at 7:00 pm. As before, this is open to non-council members, so a prompt and large turnout would be appreciated. There may also be a second pre-meeting speaker to discuss the upcoming Men s Retreat. REFRESHMENTS According to the refreshment sign-up sheet, Randy King will be providing the after-meeting goodies for the September business meeting. CALENDAR ADJUSTMENT The Barbequed Chicken sale originally scheduled for September 18, which was thought to coincide with the Dallas Cowboys home-opener, has been postponed. First, the Cowboys play on Monday night and second, a good chunk of the work crew will be needed to staff our booth at the Plano Balloon Festival, which is scheduled for September 16, 17 and 18. APOLOGETICS TO BE DISCUSSED In order to enrich our Catholic beliefs and take some time to talk about our faith, newly named Chairman of Lay Apostolate and Vocations Richard Nelson will conduct 10-minute discussions on Catholic apologetics at upcoming meetings. This series was supposed to have begun at our August meeting, but due to meeting time restraints, it has been rescheduled to start at our September business meeting.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 3 KNIGHT OF THE MONTH The Knight of the Month for July, as announced at our August meeting, is Dick Bové. When accepting the position as Lecturer he was challenged with making The Good of the Order portion of the meeting interesting and informative to the membership. Dick accepted the challenge and enlarged upon it by arranging for a series of guest speakers to present topics of current interest to the membership, as well as the Parish as a whole. So far we have had presentations on Catholic Radio in Dallas and Pope John II High School. More speakers are lined up to speak at 7:00 PM before the Monthly Meeting on the 1st Wednesday of each month. Members of the parish are invited to attend these meetings. (Dick is pictured above with David Palmer of Radio Station Xavier prior to the July business meeting) FAMILY OF THE MONTH The Family of the Month for July is Sean Keating and his family. Sean undertook the task of buying the food and drink for the family picnic even though he had no experience buying food in those quantities and with a limited budget not easy for a bachelor to do. Fortunately for Sean and us, his parents Tom and Mary jumped in and helped Sean do the shopping. Experience pays we fed about 90 people and did not run out of food or drink. Thanks all for making our picnic a success. (Sean is pictured at right cooking some of the food he purchased at the annual family picnic) The Knight and Family of the Month are announced during the Grand Knight s report at our monthly business meetings. Grand Knight Bill Fox will be announcing the Knight and Family of the month for August at the September business meeting this Wednesday, September 7 th in Fellowship Hall. JOIN US FOR THE ALL SAINTS MEN S RETREAT This is for ALL men of All Saints. We ll go up to Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House in Lake Dallas on the Lake on the evening of October 6 and come home after noon of Sunday, October 9. Any men who have made this retreat have invariably made it more than once, unless last year was their first time. The Jesuit retreat is silent. That means we get to listen and learn full time. Interaction is between the retreatant and God alone. Activities include Daily Mass and a lot of time to ourselves. You can attend as many sessions during the day or evening as you wish. The food is good and plentiful, the grounds are quiet, peaceful and very beautiful, and the rooms are quiet and comfortable. I ve been going for more than 10 years, and in my humble opinion, this is the greatest spiritual and psychological battery charger ever invented. Steve Morel, Art Bissonnette and I (Alan Schneider) are the go-to guys; we ll get you all signed up anytime you re ready. For a preview, visit their website at SEMINARIAN UPDATE Brother Knight Chuck Neubecker from Santa Maria Council, who makes annual visits to the Ukraine, spoke with the seminarian that Council 6065 is supporting and many members of Lumen Christi Council supported during their tenure at Santa Maria Council. Here is his report: I talked to Taras by phone about his summer. Taras has been a student at the Ukrainian Institute at Harvard University for two months this summer and leaves Aug. 20 th to return home. He was there on a scholarship from another source. He said that his studies there have been very fruitful since he has met students from all over the world, most of whom are not Catholic, so it gave him an opportunity to discuss the Catholic faith with them. Last summer he was an intern at Human Life International (HLI), the foremost Catholic international pro-life organization, in Front Royal, VA. He believes both were great foundations in his priestly formation. Taras now returns to Lviv, Ukraine to start his 6 th year of seminary studies at Holy Spirit Seminary of the Ukrainian Catholic University. He will have only one more year of seminary formation after that. He is starting work on his dissertation about Pope John Paul s Theology of the Body, a Catholic way to look at human sexuality.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 4 PASSBOOK SALES SLOW The council s Passbook sales kicked-off at the beginning of August. Our council ordered 600 Passbooks this year to support our largest fundraising project of Listed below is this year's summary as of end of August compared to end of August Passbooks ordered Sold & Money Collected Percentage Sold 23% 55% Passbooks Distributed to Knights, Money not Collected Money Collected $3,375 $6,900 Breakeven Amount* $7,950 $6, * Cost & Sales Price difference between 2005 & As can be seen by this chart above, we are running behind on the sales and revenue as compared to last year at this time. It is extremely important for all members of our council to fully support this project by participating in groups sales in the atrium and by obtaining a few Passbooks and selling them to neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. The profits from this fundraiser support our many charities within the All Saints community and the Catholic organizations within the area. ALL SAINTS FESTIVAL FOOD SERVICE As members of All Saints Community, members of the Knights are asked to help with various activities for the festival. We cannot be all places and do all things. So, I am asking that along with your other jobs, as a Brother Knight, you save some time to fill in where our Council has committed to SERVE That is Food Service. We are responsible to provide, cook and serve all food items for the festival. This can be a tough job for a few, or a fun easy job for many. Over the three-day event, I hope to see each and every Brother Knight at least once. We still need volunteers to work the food booths and help cook in the kitchen. All spots have openings, Friday night, all day Saturday and Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon. Contact Steve Morel (972) or stevemoral@comcast.net. PLANO FESTIVAL NEEDS Lumen Christi Council has secured a prime location at the Plano Balloon Festival to sell Krispy Kreme Donuts and Rocky Mountain Caramel Apples. Event chairman Tim Durkin and GK Bill Fox will be distributing sign-up sheets at the next business meeting. Although there will only be a few knights at the booth for each shift, the festival hours are long, so many Knights are needed. It would be appreciated if ALL Knights of Lumen Christi Council be available for at least a shift or two during the weekend of September 16, 17 and 18. Additional information will be available at the meeting. Pictured above are the co-chairmen of the event Curtis James and Thomas Kocian during the August Atrium passbook sales campaign. The next All Saints atrium sale is scheduled for before and after Masses on the weekend of September 17 and 18. Just show up before and after the Mass that you attend and help sell passbooks to fellow parishioners. For Passbooks on an individual sales basis, please contact Thomas Kocian ( ) or Curtis James ( ). We will have Passbooks for distribution to KC members at our next business meeting on September 7 at 7:30 PM. Information provided by Thomas Kocian & Curtis James

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 5 RECRUITMENT CORNER BY JOHN POSTON, MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR Our second fraternal year is off to a roaring start, with many activities, events, projects and fundraisers already penciled in on the Council s busy calendar. Our Deputy Grand Knight, Chris Diaz, has assembled a superb team of Program Directors and Committee Chairs to plan and organize a full slate of events, projects and activities beneficial to our All Saints Catholic Community. The Council s officers, program directors and committee chairs are working hard in an effort to get each and every Knight involved with at least one activity, event or project. Our accomplishments are very noteworthy and worthwhile, but are not enough to accomplish our goals. To get where we want to be, it is imperative that each of you become actively involved in our efforts to recruit new members. As you all know, our members are our greatest assets. We must continue to add to our ranks to insure the Council has adequate manpower to support a growing cadre of events, activities, projects and fundraisers. To assist you in fulfilling your new member recruitment responsibilities, the Council s recruitment committee has organized several activities and events in support of efforts to recruit new members: The October Blitz After each mass the first three weekends of October, the Council will man a table in the church atrium to promote membership in the Council, provide prospects with information about the Knights of Columbus and our Council and to sign-up prospects to attend one of two Information nights planned in October. Membership Information Nights Information Nights have been scheduled on September 14, October 13 and October 20 to provide new member prospects an opportunity to learn more about the Knights of Columbus, our Council and our activities. New Member Prospect Lists The recruitment committee is actively seeking the names of All Saints Catholic Community men qualified to be Knights that would make excellent contributions to our Council. These men will be invited in a mailing to consider membership in our Council and contacted individually by a Recruitment Team. Recruitment Teams We are organizing two man recruitment teams to visit with and recruit prospects identified by the recruitment committee. How can you help? Get involved now with the recruiting effort by assisting with one or more of the activities listed above. If you know a fellow parishioner you believe would make a good Knight, ask them to attend an information night or forward their name and information to the recruitment committee. For more information, contact John Poston at or jposton@rpkco.com. THREE BECOME FULL KNIGHTS OF OUR ORDER Deputy Grand Knight Chris Diaz and Church Director John Maier (on left) and Membership Director John Poston and Financial Secretary Rudy Arciniega (on right) flank the three newest Third Degree Knights of Lumen Christi Council (L-R) Lee Halencak, Jeff Schneider and Chris Hunt. In Second and Third Degree Exemplifications hosted by Council on Sunday, August 21 at St. Paul the Apostle Church, three Brother Knights of our Council successfully undertook and completed their Major Degrees, making them full Knights in our Order and eligible to hold office in our Council. Our new Brother Third Degree Knights are Lee Halencak, Chris Hunt and Jeff Schneider. Be sure to congratulate these new Third Degree Knights at our next meeting. All First Degree Knights are encouraged to undertake and complete their Major Degrees as soon as possible. Remember, the Knights of Columbus motto In Service To One, In Service To All. We are better able to serve one and all as Third Degree Knights. Lee, Chris & Jeff, welcome to the order of Third Degree Knights! For information regarding upcoming Major Degree Exemplifications, go to the Texas Knights of Columbus Dallas Diocese site and look under Degree Schedule. The link to this site is: JPII HS TALK Assistant Principal of John Paul II High School, Father Charles Latour (pictured at left after his presentation), was our guest speaker prior to the last Business Meeting. He discussed the opening of the new school and what has been done to make it a special place for the student population.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 6 FROM THE DIRECTOR OF COUNCIL ACTIVITIES PUBLICITY The publicity committee is here to help all chairmen get their articles in the weekly church bulletin. Church Bulletin Articles Remember that a 15-day lead time is required to have your information published in the bulletin. Church Bulletin Flyers Print ready flyers require a 10-day lead time. Printing will be done at church, with a charge, and then we need volunteers to stuff the flyers into the bulletin. LUMEN CHRISTI HOSTS SOCCER CHALLENGE FRATERNALISM Our next meeting, on September 7th, will have a showing of several new Brother Knights. All fellow Knights are encouraged to make welcome the new Knights and get to know them. We are still asking that project chairmen submit names of the most diligent Knights so they can be in the running for Knight of The Month. Deadline for submission of names is the 10th of the month. CULTURAL Dick Bové has a very informative program underway with speakers for our first Wednesday of the month meeting. This program starts at 7:00 pm with our meeting starting at 7:30. Our next speaker is from the Sacred Heart Bookstore at Coit and Campbell. Bring all family and friends to hear what s available from such a vibrant place. SOCIAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST OCTOBER 9TH Our first Pancake Breakfast of the year will be October 9th in the Fellowship Hall. Please mark some time in your busy schedules on that Sunday, three-hour shifts - from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Cub Scouts will be helping us and a portion of the proceeds will go to their Den. A sign up list will be available during our September meeting or Steve Morel at stevemoral@comcast.net. All boys and girls ages are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2005 Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge. The local competition will be held Saturday September 24 at 10:00 AM at the All Saints Catholic School during the Fall Festival. Entry forms are required to gain admission to the festival grounds. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date will be determined at a future date. The contest is based on soccer's penalty kick. The soccer goal is divided into a series of five scoring zones, with a point value given to each section. After the participant is given 15 penalty kicks, his or her total number of points will be awarded depending upon the scoring zones that were hit. The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions. The state tournament is tentatively scheduled for November 12 in San Antonio. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. For entry forms or additional information contact: Tom Long at or tlong4@sbcglobal.net. SACRED HEART MORE THAN A BOOKSTORE Lumen Christi Council will continue its series of monthly programs whose topics relate to various aspects of Catholicism. Each program will not exceed 30 minutes and will take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM just prior to the council s monthly business meeting. The public is invited to attend all programs. What makes the Sacred Heart Book Store more than a bookstore? Janet Petrucci, store manager will give us insights into its uniqueness prior to the next business meeting on September 7, 2005 in Fellowship Hall.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 7 NEW GUARDIAN KNIGHT PROGRAM INTRODUCED In an effort to both build our membership numbers and get new members involved in Council activities, events and programs, the Membership Director has introduced a new program Guardian Knight. Under this new program, each new member candidate that has been approved by the admissions committee and voted in by the Council membership will be assigned a Guardian Knight. The Guardian Knight may or may not be the same as the member that proposed the new member candidate. STAR COUNCIL AND LONE STAR KUDOS The primary goal of the Guardian Knight program is to encourage approved candidates to complete the First Degree in a timely fashion, attend the First Degree with the candidate (and provide transportation if necessary), introduce the new member to other members of the Council, encourage the new member to actively participate in business and planning meetings of the Council, encourage new members to get involved in one or more Council activities, events or programs early on, and finally to quickly complete the Major Degrees by attending with them (again providing transportation if necessary), thereby becoming full Knights in our Order as soon as possible. Active, participating Third Degree Knights are more likely to be retained as members by the Council and will clearly be better prepared to help the Council in achieving its goals. We need Knights to sign up and participate as Guardian Knights. Our program goal is to have enough Guardian Knights so that no one Knight has a burden of more than one new member at a time. For more information, contact John Poston, Membership Director at or jposton@rpkco.com. HELP NEIGHBOR SUNDAY Diocesan Deputy and Lumen Christi Council member Roger Scott Dear Brothers, Due to my duties as the Diocesan Deputy, I haven t been able to be as involved in Lumen Christi Council activities as I would like; however, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone for what you accomplished during your first year. Being not only a Star Council but also a Lone Star Award for Excellence with Distinction winner is a significant accomplishment for any council especially one during its first year. There were only 116 Star Councils last year in Texas. All of the activities under discussion at the planning meeting indicate the potential of another outstanding year for the council. I know that you will make it happen. Fraternally, Roger Scott Diocesan Deputy (and proud member of Lumen Christi) Brothers Sean Keating, Bernie Ehrler and Al Schneider (L-R) help collect donated items at the garage during our annual duties for Help Your Neighbor Sunday. Later in the day, the group loaded a truck with donated items. District Deputy Bob Seegmiller displays the Texas Charities Head Start award, which was presented to the council. This award was one of the requirements that allowed Lumen Christi Council to earn the Lone Star Award of Excellence with Distinction.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 8 KNIGHTS IN ACTION AT HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS From State Charities Chairman and past Dallas Diocesan Deputy Marce Tebbe: We need to help our neighboring states in any way we can. I am aware of at least two Charity relief efforts underway and know there are Texas State Charities collection arrangements being planned. (1) The Supreme Council has contributed $10,000 so far to the four states hit (FL, GA, MS, LA) and established a Hurricane Disaster Relief appeal (2) The Dallas Diocese started efforts this past weekend "...The Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas begins its effort to assist victims of one of the most devastating hurricanes in history! The Most Reverend Charles Grahmann has asked all pastors to take up a special collection Sunday, September 4th, to help the needy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina The money collected will be sent to Catholic Charities USA. It will aid the national humanitarian agency in its monumental task of restoring hope to thousands of people in Louisiana and other areas ripped by the hurricane. Catholic Charities in Dallas is also in the eye of the relief effort. Sister Mary Ann Owens says the immediate need is for food and water. Another assessment will be made in the near future. Sr. Owens indicates that clothing and furniture might be needed at that time. The executive director adds that Catholic Charities is accepting cash donations to help in the relief effort. Meanwhile, a number of parishes report that they are getting ready to assist the homeless in any way possible..." From District Deputy Bob Seegmiller: Here are three means that your council or your individual membership can donate to this cause: Please pass this information on to your council. Through Supreme Council: Make checks payable and send to: Knights of Columbus Charities USA, Inc. Gift Processing Center P.O. Box 9028 Pittsfield, MA Specify "Hurricane Katrina Relief" on check. Through Catholic Charities: Make checks payable and send to: Catholic Charities 3725 Blackburn Street Dallas, TX Specify: "Hurricane Katrina Relief" on check. Through Texas State Council: Make checks payable to "State Council Charities" Send to: Texas State Council Knights of Columbus 6633 Highway 290 East, Suite 204 Austin, TX Specify "Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief" on check. From Brother Knight Henry Dominguez, a member of Lumen Christi Council and an All Saints parishioner active in the relief effort: Members of All Saints Parish are coordinating a relief trip to Jackson, Mississippi, to bring supplies to the victims of the recent hurricane. Sr. Donna Gunn from Catholic Charities is coordinating efforts in Jackson. Henry is coordinating a group from the parish and will be renting a truck. On Sunday, September 4, between 1 and 2 PM they will be loading it for the relief mission. During this trip, probably the first in a series, requests were made for: Volunteers to make the trip Volunteers to help collect the supplies Volunteers to help load the truck Supplies like Diapers, Formula, Mosquito Repellant, Blankets, Towels, Canned Goods (and Can Openers), Handiwipes, Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, Toothpaste, Toiletries, etc. Monetary contributions are also welcome. As more opportunities for service become known, Lumen Christi Council will communicate these efforts via using the KNIGHT LIGHT Banner. If you know of any efforts that need to be publicized to your fellow Knights, please pass the information along. Discussions concerning a council contribution to the relief effort will be on the agenda for the next business meeting scheduled for this Wednesday, September 7, See you there.

The Beacon The Lumen Christi Council, Knights of Columbus Newsletter Page 11 CELEBRATING A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER The first Council Corporate Communion of the fraternal year held on Saturday, August 13, 2005, commemorated the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Father Michael J. McGivney. McGivney was born August 12, 1852, and died 38 years later on August 14, Members of Lumen Christi Council, their spouses and families occupied five rows in the sanctuary after processing in to the service led by the Color Corps of Assembly There were also other members of the council dispersed through the congregation and usher staff. Fr. Peter Chinnappan who has since become a member of Lumen Christi Council and the Knights of Columbus - was the celebrant of the mass. In his homily he gave five to seven minutes to the life of Fr. McGivney. This really made the celebration/remembrance special. During the prayers of the faithful, Fr. Peter concluded by including the Knights at All Saints. Don Essmiller prepared the music for the Mass to include Make Me a Channel of Your Peace for the presentation and for the recessional we sang America the Beautiful. All in all, it was a really special day. The next Corporate Communion is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2005, immediately preceding the Lumen Christi Council Christmas Dinner.
