VALLEY OFFICERS FOR 2006 It is time to begin thinking about who the 2006 elected and appointed officers will be for our four Bodies. The custom in our Valley has been for the elected officers to advance to the next higher office providing they are elected to do so and accept the position. That leaves at least one open elected position in each of the Bodies. The Valley also elects a Treasurer and an Almoner each year. The current Senior Wardens have indicated that they will accept the office of Master of their respective Bodies if the Brethren so decide. In that eventuality they are now beginning to identify Brethren who are willing to serve in any one of the numerous appointed officer positions. There are 23 in all. Brethren, please consider serving your Valley as an elected or an appointed officer for It is a great way to become part of a great team of officers and learn more about Scottish Rite. If interested, contact one of the Body Senior Wardens, the Valley Secretary or myself. Any one of us would be happy to fill you in on the duties of the various officers. Carl B. Smith, 33, Personal Representative of the S.G.I.G.

2 ALMONER'S CORNER Hernan Davinagracia, 32º According to the Scottish Rite Valley of Everett by-laws, "The Almoner shall make disbursements from the Almoner's fund for charitable purposes. He shall work independently of the Bodies, reporting only to the Personal Representative in this Valley and giving an annual accounting to the Auditing Committee or auditor showing receipts, disbursements, and amounts on hand and any investments. Disbursements from the Almoner's fund shall be made by check". During my first year on the job last year, it was indeed a busy year as I was just learning the ropes of the job and at the same time attending to numerous charitable incidents that occurred. Our brethren from Florida and California were very appreciative for the small monetary assistance we provided them in the aftermath of hurricane and flooding in their respective areas. And here in our own Valley, a lot of underprivileged school children had happy faces, while putting on a brand new pair of shoes as part of our contributions to Everett Masonic Shoe Programs. Another incident that made a difference as Masons in another persons life was, when one of our brothers ask me two days before Christmas to visit a family in our area and maybe I could do something for them. When I arrived at their home, the lady of the house was in a wheel chair and could hardly move her hands and wondering who I was. She never heard of Freemasons before, much less Scottish Rite. I made a short explanation of who we are and what we do to make her feel at ease, after all I was a complete stranger to her. She and her husband had been out of work because of illnesses to both of them and the public assistance they received could hardly meet their daily necessities. Meanwhile the utility bills kept coming on time just the same, and now it's two months overdue. She was embarrassed and could hardly say a word when I suggested that we may be able to help them on their heating bills to keep their house warm, after all it was winter time. She couldn t believe that here I was a stranger, writing a check to the electric company to pay their bill. She was very thankful indeed and had tears in her eyes and as I walked out the door, she gave me a hug. When I told my wife about this visit she said maybe that lady is now thinking there is a Santa Claus after all. There were other instances last year too that we in this Valley made all the difference in other peoples lives that I, as your Almoner was privileged to represent. Also, one of the satisfaction of having this job is simply sending a card or talking to a brother, their widows and orphans to give them some words of encouragement when they're sick or ill, and lots of times it makes their day. Lastly, I'd like to thank the brethren of our Valley for their continued generous supports, for without it, we would not be a relevant organization in our community. Did You Know? All four Presidents of the Republic of Texas were Freemasons: David G. Burnett 1836 Sam Houston M. B. Lamar Sam Houston Anson Jones FEAST OF TISHRI by Anthony Schwab, 33º One of the obligations of all Scottish Rite Masons is the annual observance of the Feast of Tishri, commemorating the dedication of King Solomon's Temple. Established by statute of the Supreme Council, issued in 1866, the celebration is now known as the Feast Day of the Lodge of Perfection. Named from the Hebrew month of Tishri, corresponding to our September-October period, it is a time of Masonic Thanksgiving. During this period, each Mason is reminded that he is a temporary dweller on this earth, that his possessions are a gift of God, and that by sharing the special gifts God has given him, he may walk in honor. The goal of living is to be reconciled to one another and to God. The observance may be a personal one, or it may be celebrated by a group of brethren sharing a meal and prayer of thanksgiving together. The several Scottish Rite Society chapters will also be celebrating the Feast of Thanksgiving over the next two months. Every Mason of the Scottish Rite is encouraged to attend a Society meeting during the sacred period. Please contact the secretary to inform him that you and a friend will be at the October 21 st dinner. Anytime in live that the going gets easier, you better check and see if your are not heading downhill. Uncle Joe, The Chinaberry Tree Philosopher

Brethren I have great news to report The Knights of St. Andrew, Everett Valley Chapter has come to life. Friday September 16 th 2005, represented the beginning of a very positive and strong new momentum within the Everett Valley. The Consecration and Installation of the Everett Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew, was a HUGE SUCCESS! More than eighty guests were in attendance for dinner, the Preceptor of the Consistory, Wayne Betts 32, and his loyal kitchen staff prepared a buffet of delicious repast. All were invited to witness the consecration of the Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew, and the Installation of Officers for The ambience of this celebration was provided by Alex Fordyce, a Bagpiper from the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band. The Knights of St. Andrew were brought into the Chapter to the tune of Mason s Apron, written by Robert Burns. The Founding Officers and Members of the Knights of St. Andrew were led into the Chapter, by Bro. Dr. Joby E. Dixon 32 KCCH, Past Founding Venerable Master, Knights Commander of St. Andrew, Austin Valley Chapter, Orient of Texas, who traveled from Washington, D.C., to present to our new Chapter, a Charter of Constitution from the Knights Commander of St. Andrew, Order of the Thistle, and the Austin Valley. Members of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite from several Valleys in the Orient of Washington, came together to celebrate with the many of the members of the Everett Valley. Several Honorary Knights of St. Andrew and two Past Venerable Masters of the Seattle Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew were present. Ill. Carl L. Alexander 33, Secretary of the Valley of Seattle was in attendance. Ill. Joseph W. MacIntyre 33, from the Bremerton Valley, was present as well; he is an Honorary Founding Member of the Everett Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew. Bro. James M. Scardelis 32 Past Venerable Master, and Bro. Al Luberts 32 Past Venerable Master, Seattle Chapter, were in attendance for the Installation. Bro. Al Luberts 32 is a Founding Member of the Everett Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew.

4 The Chapter was consecrated by Bro. Dr. Joby E. Dixon, KCCH, Dr. Joby E. Dixon KCCH is the Founding Venerable Master, of the Knights Commander of St. Andrew, Order of the Thistle, It s Alive! (Cont d) formed in the Austin Valley of Scottish Rite, Orient of Texas. Dr. Dixon conveyed greetings and best wishes from Ill. Ronald A. Seale 33, Sovereign Grand Commander, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction, to the Knights of St. Andrew of the Everett Valley. Dr. Dixon has worked with and helped many groups of Scottish Rite Masons, form Chapters of the Knights of St. Andrew, in many Valleys across the country. Dr. Dixon gave an inspiring presentation to the many guests present. His message conveyed congratulations to the Valley of Everett for their stalwart and progressive support of the development of the Everett Chapter of the Knights of St. Andrew. Dr. Dixon spoke of his experiences regarding the development of the Knights Commander of St. Andrew, Order of the Thistle, in the Austin Valley of Scottish Rite. The heart of his message to those present, was the necessity of integrating the young members of the Valley, the Black Hats, into the activities that constitute the day to day operations of the Valley. The Founding Members of the Knights of St. Andrew signed the Charter of Constitution, after which they received their Glengarry and Scottish Basket hilt broadswords, both of which are presented to a new Knights of St. Andrew initiate, as the major components of his uniform. Ill. Carl B. Smith, Personal Representative of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General, to the Valley of Everett, was presented with his uniform, as Ex-Officio Officer of the Everett Chapter, Knights of St. Andrew. After receiving his uniform Ill. Carl B. Smith spoke to the Valley of his excitement and goal to make the Everett Valley, the Guthrie Valley of the Northwest, and the involvement of our Valley in so many positive endeavors making us all better Scottish Rite Masons. Three Honorary Knights of St. Andrew were inducted into the Everett Chapter, and given their uniforms. Ill. Joseph W. MacIntyre 33 of the Bremerton Valley, Bro. Dr. Joby E. Dixon 32 KCCH, of the Austin Valley, Knights Commander of St. Andrew, Order of the Thistle, Orient of Texas, and Bro. Patrick T. Marlatt 32 KCCH, of the Everett Valley. Grady Carlston, Master Counselor of the Marysville DeMolay Chapter, gave a presentation to the attendees about the activities of his Chapter. The Marysville DeMolay Chapter was in attendance Friday, to help with serving the meal and cleaning up afterward. The Marysville DeMolay Chapter did a fantastic job. Their attendance at Scottish Rite events, helping with putting on our various dinners is always a welcome pleasure. Ill. Earl E. Greathouse, 33º gave a presentation to the group about the need for more involvement and support of DeMolay, participation in the form of volunteers to help drive the boys to events, or taking part in the annual camping events that the Marysville Chapter participates in. Ill. Earl Greathouse, º also gave a very interesting presentation about the origins and history of the development of DeMolay, he outlined for the audience what the expectations of a DeMolay member are, and how they operate, teaching these young men responsibility and service. The newly installed Officers of the Knights of St. Andrew, closed the Everett Chapter in due form, for the first time, with ample congratulations and applause of the guests who were present On behalf of the Knights of St. Andrew, I want to thank all the members of the Everett Valley of Scottish Rite, for their words of encouragement and support. So many of you have been very, very helpful in making the Knights of St. Andrew Chapter

5 become a reality. I have no doubt that the Knights of St. Andrew will become an immediate asset to the Valley of Everett for many years to come. I am very proud to have so many friends. William A. Isabelle, 32 Venerable Master, Knights of St. Andrew, Everett Chapter From the Secretary By Charrison Lochaby, 32,º Brethren, The Valley is off to a good start in our fall class. Seven candidates took their 4 th, 5 th, & 6 th degrees on Friday, Sept 23 rd and the 9 th & 10 th will be conferred Friday Sept 30 th. Let s have a good turnout and make these new brothers welcome in the Valley. I remind you of the Leadership Workshop at the Everett Masonic Center on Oct. 8 th This workshop is being put on by the Grand Lodge of Washington and is sure to be of value to us in Scottish Rite. I urge all who can attend to do so!! Brethren, while we are in the transition from the former Secretary, Harry Sherman, to me I ask for your indulgence and patience. I have a lot to learn. Harry accomplished the work in a routine manner and I am having to learn the routine, some of which is foreign to me. When I became Secretary Ill. Carl Smith, 33 0 felt that my living on Whidbey Island would impose a hardship on the Brethren of the Valley if they should need to contact me by telephone. Therefore a toll free phone has been installed in my home office for your convenience. Please make note of the number.(888) and feel free to call me should the need arise. I also have voice mail in the event I m not home when you call so please leave a message and I will get back to you. A Simple Dream by Steve Osborn, 32 I have a simple dream, or perhaps just a fantasy, as I read and watch the world crumbling about me. So many nations and peoples who want peace, yet their leadership can see only war and strife as solutions. The planet, our Mother Earth, is being poisoned, armies are being marshaled and horrific weapons are being readied. The United Nations, created to prevent these things is hanging on by a thread. My dream is a simple one. There must be Masons in all these countries, though some must still wear the forget-me-not. Would it not be wonderful if, as a start, Palestinian and Jewish Masons could sit down in Lodge as Brothers and remember there vows, then sit at refreshment and, without rancor, determine to carry that brotherly love out into the community to solve the problem that violence and political expediency cannot but exacerbate. To stand as brothers before the world and show that hate is ephemeral, that it can be defeated by love and understanding. With this as an example, perhaps brethren in the entire Middle East could sit down in peace and fellowship and work toward the same goal. At some point, as with the hundredth monkey, perhaps the ideas of Friendship, Charity and Brotherly Love would begin to spread around the world, free of sectarian strife and nationalistic fervor. The same could pertain here in

6 the United States. We could turn from war to peace and understanding as a means of problem solving. We cannot involve ourselves, as Masons, in politics or religion, but as individuals we can keep our obligations in mind and spread the cement of Brotherly love to repair the cracks in the foundation of democracy and make it whole again. We have vowed to fly to each other s relief, but are reminded in the charge that that same obligation is extended to all men. That makes us stewards of humanity and the world. It is a poor steward that will let his charge deteriorate or die. I have a dream. It could remain a fantasy, or it could become a reality. Perhaps we could swing the balance. It is worth a try PUGET SOUND REGIONAL DEGREES The Scottish Rite Valleys of the Puget Sound region will again present all the non-terminal degrees throughout the next year and a half. This is an excellent opportunity to witness degrees that you would not otherwise get to see. The empty lines on your green cards can be filled up much quicker if you can attend. A listing of the schedule of the degrees is set out below. They will all occur on a Saturday with registration, coffee and donuts beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the degrees commencing at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. The cost for the day is a very reasonable $5.00. 7 Free and Accepted Masons Scottish Rite Bodies P. O. Box 1112 Everett, WA Return Service Requested October 2005 What is Scottish Rite? Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge. A Mason who chooses to further his Masonic experience by becoming a 32 Scottish Rite Mason will be expanding upon the fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The moral and ethical lessons will allow him to be constantly reminded of his duty to God, family, country, and fellow man. Ever lock your keys in your car? Try this Now somebody was really using his or her head on this one. Ever locked the keys in the car? If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home just call someone on your cell phone who has another set. Hold your cell phones about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home or wherever press the unlock button, holding it near the phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car you can unlock the doors (or the trunk!). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried and it unlocked our car over a cell phone! Neat tip. In This Issue From the Personal Representative Masonic Workshop It s Alive! Knights of St Andrews has come to life Almoners Corner Feast of Tishri Puget Sound Regional Degree Calendar of Events A Simple Dream From the Secretary "Masonic labor is purely a labor of love. He who seeks to draw Masonic wages in gold and silver will be disappointed. The wages of a Mason are in the dealings with one another; sympathy begets sympathy, kindness begets kindness, helpfulness begets helpfulness, and these are the wages of a Mason." Brother Benjamin Franklin Help Needed! Brethren of Everett Valley, On Oct. 8 th, 2005 Everett Valley will be hosting the first of three Grand Lodge Regional Workshops at the Everett Masonic Center. All kinds of help are needed: set up, making box lunches, making coffee, clean up and take down. Every thing will be there, I just need many hands to make light work. If enough men step forward most jobs will take less than an hour so you will still be able to attend most of the workshop. Do the right thing, call me at home (425) or cell (425) or Comcast.net. Thank You brethren ahead of time, who are willing to help make the Valley of Everett look even better and more successful than it already is. Patrick Marlatt Chairman.
