3 March / April $25,000 Cathedral Maintenance Fund-O-Meter 23,000 21,000 19,000 17,000 15,000 13,000 11,000 9,000 7,000 5,000 3,000 1,000 Cathedral Maintenance Fund T he New Year is upon us. It is time to roll up our sleeves and go to work. The Cathedral needs our help as she is showing her age and needs a face lift. The Tuesday Crew is doing all it can to keep up with the everyday repairs, but to accomplish the major projects, we need financial help. Our goal for the Cathedral Maintenance Fund is to raise $25,000 which will be set aside and used only for major repairs to the Cathedral. The Cathedral Maintenance Fund had grown to a little over $7,000. Our first project was to replace the backflow valve which ruptured during the extreme cold weather we experienced this past month. The total cost was $1,700. Our next maintenance project is to replace / repair several water pipes in the small dining room. Because of these old, cracked pipes, we have been unable to use the restrooms in the Make-Up Department and the Library. Money for the renovating projects currently being done to the Banquet Room as well as plans to upgrade the Kitchen and renovate the Small Dining Room are not being taken from the Cathedral Maintenance Fund. Those projects are being paid for from money which has been earned from the parking lots. Currently, the parking lot has only five volunteers. This is a project which needs your help to continue to be successful. Please take a few minutes to check the parking lot schedule in the office and see where you can help. It only takes two hours of your time to volunteer to work a shift. Any amount you can donate to help us reach our goal will be greatly appreciated. Remember, your donations are tax deductible! Ill.. Richards, 32 Mark your calendars for April 9, 2011 at 1:00pm at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. Gather up your Lady, kids and friends! Join us for the Masonic Exposé! Several recent movies and various popular novels concerning Freemasonry have heightened the public awareness of Freemasonry. While they provide some excellent entertainment, they do not necessarily give an accurate portrayal of Masonry. Many young men are walking into the Cathedral to ask questions. Many of the Brethren are not aware of the various groups and affiliations with the Masonic Family. To solve this, we are putting together a Masonic Exposé! This is a prospect event to let the Brethren and the community at large know what it is your particular Masonic Body does and what your Masonic Body stands for. This is an opportunity to showcase the purpose of your Masonic Body and show your colors. Representatives will be present to talk about their respective bodies while displaying their individual regalia. Notices are being sent to all Masonic Bodies, inviting members to come and bring their families and friends. We will also utilize newsprint ads to alert the general community. This will be a grand prospect event! Light refreshments will be served following the presentations. The date for this Masonic Exposé is fast approaching. If you would like to have your group represented, contact Bro. Ron Richards, 32, at or ron@rwrichards.us for additional information. Rite W ords P.O. Box 391 Tucson, AZ Thank You! Maturity doesn t come with age; it comes with acceptance of responsibility. Congratulations Bro.. Phillip Calvin Boatright, 32 for successfully completing the Master Craftsman Correspondence Program, Part I. By completing this course, Bro.. Phillip has demonstrated a true commitment, not only to Masonic education, but also to the Scottish Rite organization as a whole.

5 March / April reetings fellow Profits. By the time you read this, the C.A.N.G.A. G business meeting and Ladies Night Banquet in Kingman will be over and we will have begun working on the Official Visit party to be held in May. If you have not been to an Official Visit in awhile, you should come. The business part is short, but the party and entertainment last all night!! This year, we are looking into renting a hall with a bar. I would like to invite those of you who have not been to a Blue Lodge meeting or to a Grotto meeting in awhile to feel free to attend a Grotto function. We are looking forward to meeting new Brothers and introducing you to Altan Kol Grotto. We are still here and we welcome new members. Humanitarian Foundation Timathy E. Davies, Monarch Submitted by B. Thomas Dingwall, III, PM, Venerable Prophet The Humanitarian Foundation, founded in 1949, has two important projects. First, they expend thousands of dollars annually through the United Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation. Second, they support the Dental Care for Children with Special Needs Program. This program provides the best dental care possible for children with special needs. The Grottoes of North America offer this service to those children afflicted with: Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Mentally Challenged, and Organ Transplant Children. This service is rendered to any child under the age of 18 regardless of race, creed, or color. The only prerequisite is the child must be sponsored by a local Grotto. We do not cover children covered by Medicaid/Medicare and we do not cover implants, orthodontics, or reconstructive jaw surgery. Any person who donates $50 to the Humanitarian Foundation receives an Enchanted Lantern lapel pin and certificate (extracted from It s Great to be a Grotto Member! an official publication of the Grottoes of North America.) 2011 Altan Kol Grotto Officers Monarch - Timathy E. Hamilton, PM Captain of the Guard - David Hamilton, PM Sentinel - Vacant T Toothbrush Program he Toothbrush Program has been a successful venture for the Grottoes of North A m e r i c a / Humani t arian Foundation. Over the past few years, Prophets have had much success putting the face of Grotto out in their community. The donations from the program have been overwhelming and the Grottoes of North America/Humanitarian Foundation are pleased to continue this program. When our Prophets are out in the community, whether on a street corner, the entrance of a business or some other traffic location to pass out toothbrushes and the Grotto story, we are making the public aware of our organization as they see the good we do in helping our special kids. We are making good public relations, with a positive image for our organization, which in turn will encourage others to be a part of Grotto. Prophets are not allowed to ask for donations, but should have containers available to accept donations when offered. The toothbrushes are supplied to you by the Humanitarian Foundation at no charge. The brushes are to represent our philanthropy for children. It is hoped that when people see a toothbrush, it will remind them of the Grotto and our Dentistry of the Handicapped Program. The brushes are a multicolored child s toothbrush. They are symbols relating to the Grottoes of North America and our philanthropy and not for long term dental care.

6 6 March / April 2011 Greetings Brethren! I want to thank the following KSA members who assisted with the 2011 Robert Burns Supper. Sir Knights Charles Armijo, Jr., Frank Belluardo, Jr., Brian Pilz, Jon Ruse, and Phillip Shulsky. I would also like to thank my Lady Lynn, Sir Knight Phillip s Lady Sharon, and her daughter Nicole Nieto. The assistance provided by these people was instrumental in the success of the event. Working together with all these wonderful Brothers and Ladies during the evening, deeply reinforced for me, the Masonic theme of those who best can work and best agree. The Robert Burns Supper was truly a success. After a wonderful meal (catered by the Culinary Design Catering Company), all those in attendance enjoyed a performance by dancers from the Celtic Academy of Tucson. The dancers included three who have qualified for the 2011 World Championships of Dance to be held in Ireland later this year. Spread throughout all of this, were wonderful readings of Robert Burns works and tributes to the Bard presented completely by the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew; except for the Reply to the Toast to the Lassies, which was presented by my Lady Lynn. I hope everyone in attendance shares the story of their experience with those who did not attend. The Robert Burns Supper is planned to be an annual event, and it is hoped those in attendance every year will enjoy themselves as much as this year. Recently, KSA Squire Peter Stevens completed the requirements to be Knighted into the Tucson KSA Order. The Knighting Ceremony will be open to the public, so watch for details of this upcoming event and plan to attend. I invite any 32 Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley of Tucson interested in helping to make a difference in our Valley to consider joining the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew. We serve the Tucson Valley in many ways, and are always looking for active and driven men to welcome into our ranks. You can obtain an application on the Tucson Scott i sh Ri t e website at: or by contacting one of the members. Or, if you would like to learn more about the Tucson Knights of St. Andrew, feel free to contact me directly at: randy@thejagers.com. Randal S. Jager, 32º, K.. Venerable Master, K... S... S... A... A.... F A Successful Valley Ill.. J. Michael Atchley, 33 or a Valley to be successful, it requires a lot of work on everyone s part. There are numerous areas where you can contribute; from the Dining Room Crew to the Tuesday Crew, all the way through Sound, Stage, Make Up, Wardrobe, Properties, Fund Raising, Degree Work and serving as an Officer or as a sideliner. Each and everyone is important to our success. An active Valley grows and attracts new members. Each of us knows a Master Mason who could become a Master of the Royal Secret. All we have to do is ASK. This past year was the most productive year we have had in a very long time with our largest number of candidates: 31. This should be just a stepping stone to larger Reunions this year. On another topic, we are always looking for new ideas and events we can try. If you have something you think would help make our Valley more interesting, call. Our Rodeo Night was a new idea which a member suggested we try last year. All of you who were in attendance know it was great fun and has become an annual event. One phone call from you can go a long way! 2011 SCOTTISH RITE DUES CARD Check your wallet - make sure you are carrying your 2011 Dues Card.

If not, please send a quick note to: patchley@tucsonscottishrite.org. The Silent Summons Author Unknown A member of a certain Lodge, who previously attended meetings regularly, stopped going. After a few months the Worshipful Master decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening and the Worshipful Master found his Brother home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for the Worshipful Master s visit, the Brother welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The Worshipful Master made himself comfortable, but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After a few minutes, the Worshipful Master took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth, all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. His host watched all of this in quiet contemplation. As the one, lone ember flamed, flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow, and its fire was no more. Soon, it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The Worshipful Master glanced at his watch and chose this time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember, and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately, it began to glow once more, with all the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the Worshipful Master reached the door to leave, his host said, with a tear running down his cheek, Thank you so much for your fiery summons, my Brother. I ll be back in our Lodge next meeting.
