Edward Griffiths, 33 Venerable Master, Lodge of Perfection Pasadena, CA Ph Jim Hörricks, 32 KCCH Wise Master, Chapter of Rose Croix Pasadena, CA Ph Arthur Zabounian, 32 KCCH Commander, Council of Kadosh Pasadena, CA Ph Michael J. Max McGuire, 32 Master of Kadosh, Consistory Pasadena, CA Ph Timothy Hogan s Entering the Chain of Union - search for the title at the publisher s site. I met Sir Knight Timothy when he was in the area last year. His knowledge of the esoteric, alchemic, kaballistic, and Masonic is astounding. Watching his practical demonstration of the alchemical process with mind-blowing. Unlike many books that explore around the periphery of this topic, his new book offers the reader a first hand account of traditions as diverse as Gnosticism, Hermeticism, Sufi, Druze, Taoist and Tibetan alchemical doctrines, Egyptian mysteries, Mayan traditions, and an exploration of many sacred monuments from around the world. Sir Knight Timothy isn t simply relating interpretations of books sitting on shelves, he s out there in the world reporting on his meetings with spiritual leaders of different traditions. That s what makes this book unique and worth the read. Sanford Holst s Sworn in Secret You really should get Brother Sanford s first book, Phoenicians, and read it first. What? You don t have it? For shame - get on that computer at once and order it... You ve heard the phrase, Masonic tradition informs us that at the building of King Solomon s Temple,... more than a thousand times if you re a regular attendee of Lodge. The problem is, Masonic tradition doesn t do much to inform us. That s where this great book comes in. Sworn in Secret gives you the back-story, fills in the gaps, and adds so much colour to the Temple lore, it s construction, and those that came after - the Templars. As a seeker of more light, I found this book to be a valuable aid in my quest (which will undoubtedly lead to more purchases) This book captures your attention and makes your jaw drop with awe. Impeccably researched and written, once you start reading, you won t want to put it down.
3 14 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 3 Book Reviews When I first joined Masonry, I didn t own a single book on the Craft or related subject. My first book came from the Southern California Lodge of Research - the Craft and its Symbols. It was a valuable aid and was a cherished gift from such a worthy group. Upon joining the Rite, I was given a copy of Bridge to Light. With that gift, my book inventory doubled. My curiosity got the better of me so it was off to the races. I accumulated books on the Templars, the Summerians, all of Pike s works (the Liturgy and Legenda included), and on and on (I even made it through all of Sitchin s and Wilson s flights of fancy). From that one gift, I ve outgrown my seven bookshelves, and that doesn t include the multiple GBs of e-books on disc and in my Kindle. I usually have six or seven books going at a time (I know, I m weird). It s been a while since I ve included a book review in the Bulletin, so I wanted to take a moment and share three of them with you. These are three books that I know you ll love. Owen Shieh s Journey on the Level - you can get an author-signed copy here. I saw this book reviewed elsewhere and was intrigued. The premise is so simple: how does a man in today s world actually use in daily life what Masonry teaches? Indeed. Are the professions and oaths that we take in Lodge just words, or do they mean something? Can we make practical use of the teachings of Masonry? Within the first few pages of the forward, Shieh is already challenging us to make the philosophies an integral part of our minds and consciousness. Knowing is not enough, you must apply; willing is not enough, you must do. Further on he speaks to the Masonry as a journey aspect of the work with this great quote, Food that is slow-cooked tastes better for a reason. So it is with Masonic philosophy. D. Edward Griffiths, 33 Venerable Master Lodge of Perfection Welcome to our newest 32º Scottish Rite Masons! The Ill. George Harrison Memorial Class is the largest we ve had since the mid-90 s. I wonder if there is a correlation between the size of the class and the overall quality of the degree performances. There must be because everything ran smoothly and the cast members surpassed themselves. More times than I can count the comment was made that it was so good to see so many candidates in the audience. To reiterate my remarks from the first Friday night supper We are pleased that you have chosen the Valley of Pasadena to be your home Valley. YOU are important to us. YOU are the reason WE are here. Without you, none of this would be happening. I sincerely hope that you were enlightened, inspired and entertained by what you witnessed over your two weekends. Don t be a stranger after you receive your Black Hat. There is much to be involved in here at Pasadena. It s all fun and, more importantly, rewarding. Looking forward, here are some highlights for the second third of our year: 06/01/12 Capping Ceremony for our newest 32º members. 06/15/12 2nd Annual Murder Mystery Dinner and Show. This is a fund raiser/special event for our Childhood Language Center. Cost is $50.00 per person. Now I know what you re thinking $50 for a Masonic dinner? You have got to be kidding. But think about it you can t go out to dinner and a show for $50. Some of you wouldn t even blink an eye at dropping more than $50 for a weekend in Las Vegas or Laughlin. Remember, the proceeds from this event go to the Language Center to help children with speech difficulties whose parents couldn t otherwise afford treatment. There is nothing more heart-wrenching than
4 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 4 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 13 seeing a child struggling to communicate with classmates and being ridiculed for their lack of communication skills. So even if you can t attend, your contribution will be greatly appreciated. 07/06/12 Library Dedication. To take place during the Stated Meeting of the Chapter of Rose Croix. 08/03/12 Ill. Roy Henville, 33º Meritorious Service Award presentation. 08/18/12 1st Annual Lobster Fest. 7 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 10 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 7 Women s Association News Wow, what fun we had at the High Tea May 6th at Pasadena Scottish Rite! We had a lovely luncheon prepared by our chef, Steve Johnson, a number of opportunity drawings, including several just for men, and $100 money hat. Before the luncheon we had lovely piano music played by our very own Freda Wheeler and heavenly harp music played by Judy Reiter. Who is, by the way, our flutist in our Scottish Rite Band. For those of you who were unable to attend, we are still accepting donations. This is our one big fundraiser for our contribution to the Pasadena Scottish Rite Language Center for Children. For those of you who are able to use the internet, I will give you the website and explain how to find the latest bulletin. This will allow you to see what is going on before you get your Bulletin by snail mail. The web address is You can then click on articles on the left side. Zabounian, 320 KCCH Librarian I am pleased to say that we finally have welcomed Internet service into our library. If you have a personal portable computer (lap top) and are looking for some quiet moment for you to catch-up on few personal things and surf the Net, you are welcome to stop by at our library, be comfortable on one of our armchairs and work your way through the day. Even if you do not bring your own laptop (or any of the modern Smart devices) and would like to have access to a computer with Internet, you are welcome to use the library s desktop. No passwords are required. In addition, we have begun re-finishing and re-binding several of our older books. Forty of our books have been picked-up for a facelift. They should be back on our shelves in a month. I would like to thank Brothers Ron Alcorn, KCCH and Todd Nicholas, KSA for pursuing to bring Wi-Fi Internet service to the entire building and the Cathedral Board for funding it. A perfect example of a noble contention, rather emulation, of who best can work and best agree. Welcome to our New Members The following new members of the Valley of Pasadena obtained the title Master of the Royal Secret at the Valley of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Each spring the Valley of Guthrie presents all 29 Degrees of the Scottish Rite, live and in costume, and any qualified applicant may travel to Guthrie for this special event. These seven took advantage of this special Guthrie Reunion and are part of our Valley. Alex Agopian Tigran Bediriian Sarkis Shirinyan Arsen Babayan Erik Mortensen Gagik Barseghyan Robert Petersen
