Our guest speaker Brian Felweg will inform us regarding alternatives to Central Hudson s rates. By Grand Knight, Tom Battaglia Brothers, It saddens me to say that member John Guido passed away. A knight for 53 years, he was an Honorary Life member who became a member on May 1, You know, we don t see many older members at our meetings, but that doesn t mean that they don t matter. We all get old, eventually we all can t drive at night Don t think these guys have walked away! If you know of an older member who hasn t made it to a meeting in a while, please offer to give him a ride. You ll do a valuable service to that member, our Order, and our founder Venerable Michael J. McGivney. Remember, we re brothers. We re planning to honor Msgr. Bellew and Father Dhas before they retire from our parish. I am speaking with them, to schedule a celebration for their many years of service to our community. We will let you know when we have something worked out. Please join us at our social dinner, on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 7pm. We will have a dinner, $5 per person, wives and guests welcome. Brian Felweg, from Viridian, will speak about the green energy option, and how it might save you money. Come on down, ready to ask anything you like about energy rates. Our Council-sponsored Deceased Members Mass will be 9am on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at St. Mary s. Wappingers Assembly business meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 8pm. The Business Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 8:00pm. There will be a vote on a resolution to spend $2414 towards the purchase of a new dishwashing machine, to be paid out of the 100th Anniversary account. Please attend this meeting to vote! C H A P L A I N S T H O U G H T S By Monsignor Francis P. Bellew, Vicar of Dutchess County Dear Brother Knights and Families, Last month we closed our consideration of the responsibilities grown children owe their parents. As much as they can, they must give their parents material and moral support in old age and in times of illness, loneliness, or distress. Jesus recalls this duty of gratitude in the Gospel of Mark 7: For the Lord honored the father above the children, and he confirmed the right of the mother over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure. Whoever honors his father will be gladdened by his own children, and when he prays he will be heard. Whoever glorifies his father will have long life and whoever obeys the Lord will refresh his mother. (Sir 3:2-6) Continued on Page 6

Candidates to arrive by 1:00pm F I NA N C IAL SECRETARY S REPORT By Ron Kowalczyk, Financial Secretary Brother Knights, This winter has been not only long and brutally cold, it has been very expensive. The Council s three major expenses are utilities, insurance and taxes. Our 2014 annual budget for electricity, gas and water combined is $14,000. We have already spent $5,515 against that total and the air conditioning season has not arrived yet. Our Central Hudson bill for March was $2,210 due to an increase of more than twice the cost per kwh than the previous month. On top of that, next month our bill will increase due to the new 3.75% county wide tax that is being levied. The council has taken actions to keep our utility cost to a minimum. All incandescent lighting throughout the bldg. has been replaced with either LED or CFL lighting. Motion detectors have been installed in the restrooms to automatically turn the lights on when anyone enters and off when they leave. Power to the exterior walk-in freezer and cooler has been turned off. A generous member has donated a box freezer and the refrigerator in the kitchen is filled to the brim. Members of the Columbus Club make sure that all lights are turned off, excluding exterior lights, and thermostat settings are lowered at the conclusion of every event. If these actions do not bring our utility cost down, money may have to be diverted from discretionary spending including the charity account. On a more positive note, the semi-annual audit of the Council s financial records was completed by the trustees and the resulting approval form sent onto Supreme. I want to thank the Trustees, the Treasurer and the Deputy Grand Knight for their assistance. There are still 33 members who have not paid their annual dues. If you have not sent in your dues payment, please do so soon! If you are having financial difficulties, please call me at (845) or me at rjkow@optonline.net so we can work out a payment plan. All personal information will be kept confidential. I also want to thank all the members who have paid their annual dues on time. May God bless all our members with good health, peace and brotherly love. I thank you for your financial support of our council. PA T R I C K S P A R A D E Brothers, I was at the Dutchess County St. Patrick's Parade on Saturday, March 1, As always, the parade marches right past our door, in the Village of Wappingers Falls. Congratulations to Past Faithful Navigator Glen Kelly, who was the Grand Marshall of the parade. Above: Knights and Scout Leaders Rob Usher and Tom DiFiore marched with Cub Scouts Below: Past Grand Knight Gene Noone drove a float for the Ancient Order of Hibernians The Fourth Degree Exemplification was held on March 29, 2014, at the Ramada Conference Center, in Fishkill NY. I will report on the event at the April business meeting. Our next Patriot Club will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 7:00pm. PFN Tom Tompkins and I will chair the event. Brothers, I ask for your help and support. As you know, this is how we raise funds for the Assembly. Remember the importance of this; I can't stress this enough: support the Assembly, buy a ticket. All patriotic info will be in the newsletter. PFN Glen P. Kelly, riding in style! Thanks to our Color Corps Commander, PFN Lou DeFelice, and our District Marshall, Bill Hunt, for marching in the parade. Even though it was just the three of us, people on the street were impressed with our white, purple, and green capes (respectively) and chapeaux. Believe it, or not, people ask questions; I just tell then the importance of being a Knight, what it means to my fraternal brothers and me, and what we're all about - which is charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. See you at the Assembly business meeting, on Wednesday, April 9, It will begin at 8:00pm. Only members with a current 4th Degree membership card will be admitted.
