4 Page 4 Published monthly by Wappingers Council #1646 A MESSAG E FRO M THE SUPREME KNIGHT [Editor s Note: Following the Supreme Convention, which was held in St. Louis, Missouri on August 1-3, 2017, the Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, ed the following message to the members. For the many of you who do not have , it is listed below.] Dear Brother Knight: This week, more than 2,000 Knights and their families gathered in St. Louis for the 135th Supreme Convention, which was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the last fraternal year, and to chart the course for an even brighter future for the Knights of Columbus. A Papal Message to the convention conveyed the prayers and good wishes of Pope Francis who praised the Order s efforts to strengthen family life and provide relief to persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Just days before the convention, the Board of Directors authorized a $2 million effort to save Karamdes, a predominantly Christian town in the Nineveh Plain region of Iraq, which was liberated from ISIS late last year. During my annual report, I announced the Knights of Columbus Campaign to Save 1 Million Children. Through our Ultrasound Initiative, we have already provided 829 ultrasound machines and this new campaign aims to reach the goal of 1,000 machines as quickly as possible, so that by 2019 the 10th anniversary of the initiative we will have saved an estimated total of 1 million lives. The Order reached new heights in its charitable works, donating more than $177 million and 75 million hours to charitable causes. Our industry-leading program of insurance by brother Knights, for brother Knights continues to provide the finest protection to our families, issuing a new record of more than $8.54 billion of new life insurance last year. We also celebrated the achievements of our fraternal leaders and insurance field force, and presented the Order s highest honor, the Gaudium et Spes Award, to a courageous Maryknoll priest, Father Gerard Hammond, who has travelled to North Korea more than 50 times to provide humanitarian aid. The convention was also the occasion for a historic announcement: the introduction of the new uniform of the Fourth Degree. After careful consideration, the Board of Directors took this action motivated by the best interests of the Order as whole and of the Fourth Degree in particular. The new uniform is part of a comprehensive and necessary effort to keep our Order relevant and attractive to men, particularly younger men. In light of this significant change, I thought it would be helpful to address some of the questions that have been asked about the new uniform. 1. The cape and chapeau, while popular among some Fourth Degree members, have become dated and are increasingly cited as a reason that eligible Catholic men, especially young men, do not join the Knights of Columbus. 2. Today there are nearly 2 million members of the Order, but only 358,000 of them are Fourth Degree Knights less than 20 percent. The old regalia was one reason often given by brother Knights for why they did not want to advance to the Fourth Degree. 3. We understand that some Fourth Degree members are fond of the old regalia. The cape and chapeau regalia will still be allowed, for a time, in those assemblies and districts that wish to use it, though the preference is for the new uniform. 4. Ceremonial swords will continue to be part of the Fourth Degree. 5. The new uniform is designed to be much more versatile than the older regalia and can be worn at a much wider range of functions. 6. Our choice of uniform, while important, has always been ancillary to the work we do carrying out the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, and this should always be the case. We have been testing the new uniform over the past year with key groups of Knights, including those brother Knights who participate in our annual Warriors to Lourdes Pilgrimage. The feedback we received from these groups has been very positive. During the convention, the Good of the Order Committee spoke in words I wish to make my own: We commend all of the faithful Sir Knights who have proudly worn the Fourth Degree regalia, bringing much respect to the Order. With the new Fourth Degree uniform, recently approved by the Board of Directors, this honor and respect associated with Sir Knights will remain, and it will open the door more widely for a new generation to join their ranks. In a spirit of unity, let us assist with a smooth transition to this new uniform and encourage it to be worn with great dignity and pride. Fraternally, Carl A. Anderson Supreme Knight

5 Loughlin Ledger Page 5 W A P P I N G E R S A S S E M B LY 0770 NEWS F R O M THE F A I T H F U L N AV I G A T O R Worthy Sir Knights and my Brother Knights, Before we roll up our sleeves, let us remove our hats and say a prayer for Father Norbert DeAmato, OFM, who passed away on August 1, 2017 in Massachusetts. He was a member of our Assembly for 61 years. Perhaps we should nickname September, Swooshtember, as Wappingers Assembly hits the ground running this month with an installation, one or two parades, a mass and a 9/11 memorial service. Before we get started, the Supreme Knight announced a new uniform for the Fourth Degree. Let me assure you that the old Fourth Degree uniform (consisting of a black tuxedo, white shirt, black bow tie, black cumberbund, black shoes, social baldric, and approved Fourth Degree lapel pin) and additional Color Corps regalia (cape, chapeau, and sword) is still acceptable and in-use for the rest of the fraternal year. For more information, visit kofc.org Now, the Town of Wappingers Community Day Parade is described on page three of this newsletter. It is the first fun day on our calendar, and I encourage all of our members and families to join me in this pleasant and easy less-than-a-mile stroll to Schlathaus Park (and all of the festivities that the Town of Wappinger s Recreation Department has planned! The next morning, we will be at the Council s sponsored Deceased Members Mass at St. Mary s Church, in Wappingers Falls. As usual, our Color Corps will participate. All council and assembly members are encouraged to line up behind the Color Corps for Holy Communion. May I suggest that you also wear your KofC shirts, jackets, and/or lapel pin. Patriot Day (A.K.A ) falls on a Monday this year, and there will be a candlelight memorial service in Mesier Park, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Contact Commander Lou DeFelice for updates on our participation. Additionally, while Patriot Day is not a Federal holiday, it has been added to the Flag Holidays listed in the U.S. Flag Code (section 174). On this day, the flag should be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset. By the way, it should be noted that there are two other official flag holidays this month: Labor Day (on September 4, 2017) and Constitution Day (on September 17, 2017). On Wednesday, September 13, 2017, the Installation of Assembly Officers will be held at the hall. Master Alfred Ronda conducting the installation. Officers should wear tuxedo and social baldric. Wives and guests are welcome for the dinner, which will start by 7:30pm. The Installation will follow. Officers from St. John Paul II Assembly #2917 (Fishkill) and St. Martin de Porres Assembly #2891 have been invited to be installed during the same ceremony. (You may recall that officer s from St. Martin de Porres Assembly joined us in 2015, and St. John Paul II Assembly #2917 joined us last year.) September 9, 2015 Then-District Master Edmund Newborn installed the officers for Wappingers and St. Martin de Porres Assemblies. Then-District Marshall Edward Duffy PFN assisted. (Photo by John Simons, PFN) Faithful Navigator, SK Jim Mortillaro Come down, and get to know your colleagues. As our children and we go back to school, and we find that our autumn wardrobes don t fit like they used to, please remember our clothing donation shed, which is placed in the rear parking lot. Donations are accepted to raise funds to support the Assembly works and to help us assist the Council. Please continue to donate usable clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, linens, pillow cases, blankets, curtains and stuffed animals to our bin. Donation receipts are available. Our first official business meeting of the Columbian year will be on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 8 p.m. in Msgr. Loughlin Memorial Hall. Please keep all of our members in your prayers, especially those who are sick or in distress. St. Issac Jogues, pray for us. A S S E M B L Y O F F I C E R S & A P P O I N T E E S Faithful Friar Rev.
