1 Volume 8, Issue 5 May 2010 We Will With God s Help Across the country and across the world, organizations, for-profit and non-profit alike are tightening belts, passing rail-thin budgets, cutting programs and services, and even closing down. As people face the difficult reality of cutbacks and job loss, household budgets are leaner. Times are scary. Money is tight. The difficulty of what we are all facing serves to highlight why the recent events in our parish are so remarkable. You responded to the Midtown Assistance Center s Lenten food drive by going far beyond the requested 300 bags. In addition to the bags and bags and bags of food that will fill MAC s pantry and feed the needy families of Midtown Atlanta, you contributed $775 to further MAC s work of fighting hunger and homelessness. You responded to refugee ministries unusual mid-spring call for furniture to outfit an apartment for Haitian refugees by providing furniture for not just the one requested apartment, but furniture enough for two apartments, furnished entirely though parishioner donations, lovingly moved and arranged with your hands. You responded to Geoffrey s special appeal for funds to reach our budget goal. So far, over 200 households have responded to this appeal, ensuring that we will continue to be a generous, thriving, hardworking parish, continuing to care for the lost, the least and the lonely among and around us. This is remarkable and good and holy. And though it is remarkable, it is not at all surprising. We are All Saints, after all, and we have been moving through the world with this same openness and generosity for more than a hundred years. And, with God s help, we will for at least a hundred more. As a community, we have proven that fear, though appropriate given the world s economic situation, will not rule the Body of Christ. As the Body, we will continue to live and act with a spirit of abundance and generosity, understanding that scarcity has no place in God s world. Please Join Us For Confirmations, Sunday, May 23 Bishop Alexander will preside. Youth will be confirmed during the 9:00 a.m. service, Adults will be confirmed during the 11:15 a.m. service.

4 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY Coming Up Join us for Easter-mester, where we will hear from professional theologians about the great 50 days of Easter. On May 2, we will hear from the Rev d Fred Whitehurst, who combines his experience as an adjunct instructor of art history at Georgia State in with his care giving training and experience as a hospice chaplain in his talk The Art of Care: Grief and the Easter Journey. On May 16, join L. Edward Phillips, Associate Professor of Worship and Liturgical Theology, Candler, for Reflecting on the Music, History and Theology of the Easter Season. Sunday, May 2 and Sunday, May 16 10:20 a.m. in Ellis Hall Novel Theology Playing for Pizza, by John Gresham A young quarterback, whose oncepromising NFL career is over before he knows it, moves to Italy to play professional American football, or what passes for it, and he discovers that la dolce vita is about far more than the fame and fortune he was seeking back home. This romp of a story cannily asks what are the things that give our lives worth and it will make one heck of a reason to get together at the close of our year for some nice Italian wine, perhaps even pizza. Wednesday, May 19 7:00 p.m. in P304, Parish Hall For further information contact Jerry Byrd: or jerald.byrd@comcast.net or visit /parishlife All Saints Episcopal Church The Parish Celebrates Richard Hall, Director of Christian Social Ministries Between the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. services, all are invited to a reception in Ellis Hall where we will honor and celebrate Richard s service to All Saints. Richard has spent more than four years serving as the director of Christian Social Ministries where he oversees Threads, Refugee Ministries, MAC, Emmaus House, Global Missions, and Earth Stewards. Richard is retiring officially this year and will have a lot more time to continue traveling to New York City where he and his wife Barbara have an apartment as well as spend free time to enjoy their grandchildren here in the Atlanta area. Plan to help us thank Richard and celebrate him before his official retirement begins this summer. Popcorn Theology This month we close our current season with A Room with a View. This thoroughly entertaining film that takes a bit of a swipe at the British class system moves between Florence, Italy and the English countryside. It is about the possibilities of a new life far different from the one originally planned. And who among us has not considered just such a thing?! There will be a fun and interesting discussion following the movie. Friday, May 21 Showtime 7:00 p.m. in Ellis Hall $3 admission includes the movie, liquid refreshments and, of course, popcorn. For more information call Barbara Blender at 404/ or bblender@bellsouth.net. Coming Up in June Summer Hymn Requests This summer we will be singing some of your favorite hymns. After taking a good look at your hymnals, please submit your hymn choice to Ray Chenault. Please include your name and contact information. While it is not possible to include every hymn, we will do our best to use those hymns that are most frequently requested. Sundays, June 13 August 1 10:00 a.m. service Contact Ray Chenault at 404/ or rchenault@allsaintsatlanta.org to submit your hymn. You may also let him know after church on Sundays.

5 PAGES 4 & 5 Handel And Haydn Concert May 14 Hymn Tune: Chereponi The cultural diversity of contemporary congregations of the Episcopal Church has led to the enrichment of the Church s hymnody through the addition of hymn texts and tunes from other cultures. Several represent the work of Aftican and African- American poets and composers. This charming Ghanaian hymn is an addition that has gained almost immediate and extensive acceptance and use. In the late The final concert in the All Saints Concert Series will feature the All Saints Choir performing choral masterpieces by Handel and Haydn. Raymond Chenault will direct the choir, accompanied by organist Elizabeth Chenault and orchestra. Soloists for the challenging Harmoniemess by Haydn will be Patty Dontje (soprano), Laurie Swann (alto), DeWayne Trainer (tenor), and James Marshall (baritone). The choir will also perform Handel s Zadok the Priest, one of the four Coronation Anthems written for the coronation of King George II in Jefferson McConnaughey will be the soloist for Handel s Organ Concerto in D (Opus 7, No. 4). Handel And Haydn Concert Friday, May 14, 7:30 p.m. in the church Tickets are $10 adult and $5 student/senior, and are available at the door, or online at /music (then click on Concert Series). Choirmaster s Corner May Hymn of the Month Hymn # 602: Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love nineteenth century a missionary in Ghana encouraged the Christian natives to write their own hymn texts and sing them to some of their traditional African melodies. Jesu, Jesu is one of the results set in 6/8 metre, encouraging the swaying of the body in time with the singing, a much-beloved custom in Africa. This tune was collected at Chereponi in Northern Ghana between 1959 and Contributing to the All Saints Special Appeal All Saints is a strong parish. In these uncertain economic times we want to be more the church, not less. Many cuts have been made to the budget over the last two years. So far, over 200 households have contributed to the Special Appeal. If you haven t given already but are able, please consider offering an additional $50 this year for every person in your household and, if possible, an extra $50 for one of our brothers or sisters for whom that is impossible. Thank you for your continued sacrifice. If you have questions or to make a donation, call Ellen Hayes, Director of Stewardship and Development, 404/ or ehayes@allsaintsatlanta.org. may Youth & Children s Choir Schedules cherub choir Wednesday, April 28 Last Rehearsal See y all in the fall; choirs begin August 25th primary choir Wednesday, April 28 Last Rehearsal See y all in the fall; choirs begin August 25th Sunday, May 2 Sing for worship 9:00 a.m. service in church, please arrive by 8:15 a.m. junior choir & handbells Wednesday, April 28 Last Rehearsal See y all in the fall; choirs begin August 25th Sunday, May 2 Sing & ring for worship 9:00 a.m. service in church, please arrive by 8:15 a.m. youth choir & handbells Thanks for a great year see y all the fall! 6 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY All Saints Earth Stewards Launches a CSA Initiative Brings Locally Grown, Fresh Produce to All Saints On Wednesdays This month, All Saints Earth Stewards launches our newest plan to lower our carbon footprint, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Wikipedia defines a CSA as a socioeconomic model of agriculture and food distribution. Most CSAs are a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation where the growers and consumers share the risks and benefits of food production. All Saints is pleased to partner with Moore Farm & Friends, an organic farm in Alabama that has delivery to Atlanta already set up. We chose them because they offer quite a bit of flexibility to those interested in participating. To join, you pay an annual membership fee of $25. Once paid, you may order any of the flexible packages available as often as you d like during the year. The Farmer s Pick comes in two sizes and is more like a traditional CSA box, in that you get whatever is in season that week. There are also weekly specials available, some from Moore s and some from other farms in the area. You can add meats, dairy, eggs and cheeses to your order. There are canned items, soaps and gift ideas, as well. Go to and explore the website for a more complete picture of how this works. Once you place your order, you pay online and simply show up at All Saints on Wednesday to pick it up. We ve scheduled the delivery to coincide with choir practices, Wednesday night suppers and several adult education class offerings in hopes you can combine trips. Or if All Saints Wednesday pick up isn t convenient, Moore Farm & Friends has a variety of pick-up options across the metro area. And don t worry if something comes up and you re unable to pick up your order. It won t go to waste as we ve made arrangements to donate any unclaimed items to Covenant Community. To sign up, let Marti Breen know of your interest by calling or ing mbreen@c3marketing.com. Several of you that indicated interest in joining a CSA during Martha McMillin s Food for the Soul class may already have heard from us. Plan Now For Upcoming Play in Creation Events Earth Stewards is hosting a couple of outings to give us a chance to get closer to God s creation this summer: June Stay in a state park cabin at George Smith Park in Southwest Georgia or Cloudland Canyon Park in the Northwest Georgia Mountains. August 28. Join us for a 5 mile hike and overnight stay at the Len Foote Hike Inn near Amicalola Falls. Contact Marti Breen at or at mbreen@c3marketing.com for details and to reserve your space. 7 PAGES 6 & 7 Vestry Notes From the meeting on March 15, 2010 Winifred Davis reported that 12 parishioners attended the Cornerstone Society luncheon and enjoyed a presentation on planned giving presented by Bert Clark. Stewardship reported that as of March 15th there are 795 pledges thus far totaling $2.63 million, including 116 new pledges. The treasurer reported that February receipts were under budget by $58,000, but it is considered more of a timing issue and not a cause for immediate concern. Property operations were also under budget due primarily to insurance payments being made this year on a quarterly basis. The Finance Committee presented the proposed 2010 budget for approval. Budgeted pledges total $2.674 million, which is flat from Youth program expenses have increased by $29,000 and personnel expenses were up $30,000 due to increased costs of benefits (but no increases in salaries). Altogether, the proposed budget reflects a net $43,000 deficit. The vestry discussed at length the wisdom of passing a deficit budget, noting that (a) these are extraordinary times, (b) we passed a deficit budget last year and ended up with a surplus, and (c) the special appeal letter that was sent out was already receiving a favorable response. The finance committee also noted that it will monitor closely the receipts and expenses and institute a spending freeze and/or make cuts mid-year if necessary. Following an extensive discussion, the vestry adopted unanimously the 2010 budget as presented. Spring Cleaning for Trading Graces Please bring in your gently used books, CD s and DVD s for our upcoming Trading Graces. We will be collecting these items at the parish life desk throughout the month of May and will have Trading Graces up and ready to shop in June. Inamar de Souza addressed the vestry and thanked them for All Saints continued support, and Emmanuel Bwatta thanked the vestry for all of the support he has received as he receives his Masters of Sacred Theology from Sewanee in May and will then return to his native Tanzania. Geoffrey gave his report and highlighted the special appeal and rector s forum on March 21. Florence Holmes then discussed the vestry elections and slate of nominees and noted that we are using the same process as last year. Geoffrey also noted that the recent Enquirer s retreat drew 27 people. Noelle York-Simmons highlighted the upcoming Easter-mester in adult formation, a series of lectures and programs centered on the theme of Easter. Chuck Girardeau presented a first draft of Journey into the Bible, the children s formation offerings for kindergarten through 5th grade. Scott Hayes commented on the Little Saints ministry and the great work of the committee. John Herring noted that there is a large class for the pilgrimage this year, with 18 students and 5 chaperones. Christian Social Ministries reported that the MAC Food Drive continues to go well. Parish Life highlighted that the men s retreat did take place with 14 men participating in a weekend of fellowship. 32 women are planning on attending the upcoming women s retreat. There will be a discussion of Habitat in Haiti coming in April. All Vestry meetings are open and meet at 4:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Parish House with dates announced in The All Saints Monthly. may youth calendar Sunday, May 2 Easter 5 Sunday School Confirmation rehearsal for 10th grade (10:20 a.m.) No Handbells or Choir No SNL Sunday, May 9 Easter 6 Sunday school No Handbells or Choir No SNL Saturday, May 15 Rite 13 Rehearsal and Dinner 5:00 p.m. in Ellis Hall Sunday, May 16 Easter 7 Rite 13 Sunday school No Handbells or Choir SNL Grades 7-12 Sunday, May 23 Pentecost Last day of Sunday school No Handbells or Choir No SNL

In addition to a great barbecue dinner the ever-popular dessert contest will be in full swing, so get your recipes ready and get ready to experience fantastic sweets prepared by your parish friends! Dessert contest judges will determine who wins the contest in a variety of categories yum, yum! Milkshake Mayfield and his jazz accompanists will perform the best jazz music to be heard and enjoyed in Atlanta. The Milkshake Quartet will be playing the picnic this year and they are widely known for contemporary music, bee-bop and straight ahead jazz, seasoned with a taste of funk, and favored for its unique polyrhythmic music in improvised format. It is sure to be an experience of the ultimate in jazz. Milkshake s credits are several musical compositions and arrangements, and two CD s, In My Time which is smooth jazz, and his gospel jazz CD that he is currently working on. During his college days, he was lead trumpeter in the Clark College Jazz Orchestra, the Morehouse College Big Band, and the Atlanta Band. Milkshake performed with Duke Ellington as a college sophomore. We will also be welcoming back the very talented and popular Maria the face painter who will be on hand to paint the faces of the kids! We will also feature a moon walk and water activities for kids of all ages. This is sure to be an evening of casual fun, great food and fantastic fellowship right here in our courtyard.
