1 Vo l u m e 8, I s s u e 8 S e p t e m b e r Celebration of Ministries 2010 Join us on Sunday, September 12 for our annual Celebration of Ministries Sunday. Every ministry, group, class and activity will process a banner through our 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. worship services to celebrate the diversity and richness our parish has to offer. Between services, we will fill the courtyard with displays and information on these various groups. Browse the offerings to better understand our parish and, when the Spirit moves you, sign up for something new. If you are involved in any of our parish ministries, check with your group leaders to see if they need assistance to make this year s Celebration of Ministries Sunday another remarkable day in our church. Kerygma: An Introduction to the Bible This 32-week introduction to the central text of our faith is a great exploration for those who have no prior study of the Bible and also for those who have taken some Bible classes in the past. The Kerygma curriculum helps participants get familiar with the Bible from cover to cover. We ll look at the different books in order, learning about the origins and themes, stories and characters to help us navigate our own faith in light of the Word. Mondays beginning September 13 with The Rev d Noelle York-Simmons 2:30-4:00 p.m. Or Tuesdays beginning September 28 with The Rev d Jim Donald 6:00-7:30 p.m. (Location for both to be announced.) The $40 fee covers the book and class resources though scholarships are available. Advance registration is required by visiting the website. Contact Noelle York-Simmons at noelle@allsaintsatlanta.org or with questions. Many thanks for our Sundae Sunday scoopers David and Diane Barber, Tim Frilingos, and Robert Begley. They were a huge help and offered a whole lot of ice scream for the great crowd that gathered in Ellis Hall. Monday Morning Moms This Bible study and fellowship time for mothers with young children will meet Monday mornings to read and discuss passages from Scripture relevant to our lives and to the world around us. There will always be coffee! Mondays, beginning September 13 10:00-11:30 a.m. in P307 Childcare is available but limited. Contact Noelle York-Simmons at noelle@allsaintsatlanta.org or with questions and to indicate your interest. Arts Theology and the Gallery Wall present the work of parishioner Tony Fey Plan to join us at the reception to celebrate the opening of this show with Tony Fey. Tony will share with us some of the more intimate details of his paintings and drawings. From Tony on his work: I once heard that the best definition of art was that it was something that hit you in the elbows. I can t think of any better. This collection of paintings and illustrations is a retrospective of the past 20 years of my participation in the community of All Saint s Church. For me, and my need to create art, it is always about recording the facts and trying to show you what I see, and hopefully, with God s help, to hit you in the elbows too. Opening Reception Tuesday, September 14 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Ellis Hall Showing September and October The Gallery Wall in Ellis Hall continued on page 4

4 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY Coming Up: continued from page 2 Popcorn Theology Begins Twelfth Season We are pleased to begin the season with Up in the Air. Through a beautifully written mix of comedy, satire and drama, the film takes us into the uncomfortable world of corporate downsizing. This incredibly relevant story takes on issues such as the loss of human connection in our technological age and corporate rationalizations for ruthless actions. The film conveys, with sharp wit, the various ways people seek to handle their loneliness in today s world. Guest facilitator will be longtime All Saints parishioner Steve Hines, author of Atlanta Jobs. Friday, September 17 Showtime 7:00 p.m. in P301 $3 admission includes the movie, liquid refreshments and, of course, popcorn. For more information call Barbara Blender at 404/ or bblender@bellsouth.net. Jezebels: The Women s Book Study Each Wednesday evening, parishioner Brooke Dixon leads the Jezebels through the study of a book of common interest. The group is open to all women of the parish and is a wonderful forum for study and fellowship. Any woman is welcome to join at any time! All Saints Episcopal Church Wednesdays, beginning September 22 5:00 p.m. P201, Contact Noelle York-Simmons at noelle@allsaintsatlanta.org or with questions. Growing in Faith Together: GIFT Sometimes an individual can feel lost in a big parish. GIFT offers participants the opportunity to be known in a smaller community-within-the-community and to know others on a deeper level by sharing thoughts, concerns, doubts, and struggles that come out of a relationship with God. The GIFT presentations led by clergy and guests delve into various issues related to faith, frequently stemming from issues that come out of current events. Each small group meets together following the presentations to wrestle with questions that encourage discussion about living out our faith in the every day world. Wednesdays, beginning September 22 7:00-9:00 p.m. in P301 Register for the GIFT program through the event calendar on our website or contact Noelle York-Simmons at or noelle@allsaintsatlanta.org for more information. Novel Theology Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel This stylishly written and beautifully researched novel brings to life the stunning personalities and events surrounding the court of England s King Henry VIII. Through the eyes of Henry s adroit advisor Thomas Cromwell, we get to peer in at the tug of war taking place between mighty Church and mighty Tudor state. Missi McMorries and Jerry Byrd will facilitate two discussions of this richly dense narrative. Wednesday, September 22 and 29 7:00 p.m. in the youth lounge For further information contact Jerry Byrd: or jerald.byrd@comcast.net or visit Love Among The Saints This year s revue, Love Among the Saints, features the All Saints Choir and Friends singing songs of love from great Broadway shows. The revue is written, staged and hosted by Doug Lothes, with musical direction and accompaniment by Ray and Beth Chenault. Tickets are $10 at the door, or charge early online at Friday, September 24 reception & cash wine bar 7:30 p.m. performance in Ellis Hall For more information contact Lauri Begley at or lbegley@allsaintsatlanta.org. Help our new refugee family move in! All Saints will be furnishing an apartment for our new refugee family and is looking for volunteers to help unload furniture, unpack the kitchen and set up the bedrooms, etc. As little as one hour of volunteering would be a huge help. Our family should arrive a few days after the apartment set up. Saturday, September 25 Meet at the church at 9:00 a.m. For more information or to volunteer contact Louisa Merchant at or louisam@ allsaintsatlanta.org. Coming this Fall Woodall Lecture at All Saints : Save the Date! The Woodall Lecture Committee is pleased to announce that our next lecturer will be The Rev. 5 PAGES 4 & 5 Concert Series Begins September 28 With Three Tenors Our own Three Tenors DeWayne Trainer, Thiago Soares, and Richard Clement will present the opening concert in the All Saints Concert Series. The tenors will present solos, duets, and trios, accompanied by pianist Daniel Solbert. All the tenors are current members of the All Saints Choir. Richard (Rick) Clement was a staff singer while attending Georgia State University, and went on to a glorious career as a lyric tenor, singing with most of America s major orchestras, touring internationally, and winning a Grammy award. DeWayne Trainer is a staff singer, has sung solo roles in major oratorio and opera productions, and is featured on many Choir recordings. Thiago Soares, a native of Brazil, won first place in the prestigious Brazilian opera competition. He is a staff singer and Atlanta resident while majoring in vocal performance at Georgia State University. Their music will set your spirits soaring! The All Saints Concert Series includes eight concerts, and is completely supported by donations and ticket sales. In addition to The Three Tenors, the series will include organ concerts by Robert Delcamp and Lynne Davis; choral concerts by selected soloists from The Atlanta Opera Chorus, Hymn Tune: Dakota Indian Chant This Native American hymn is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Dakota Indians of South Dakota. It s place in the history of their faith and persecution is one of great importance. Like the text of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, By gracious powers (Hymn 695/696), it gives witness to an unwavering faith in a loving God in spite of great tribulation. The tune Dakota Indian Chant baritone Ryan Taylor, the Atlanta Sacred Chorale, and the Cathedral Church of the Advent Choir; and a jazz concert by the Ellington Band at The Lovett School. The Three Tenors Tuesday, September 28 7:30 p.m. in the church Tickets are $10 adult and $5 student/senior, and are available at the door, or charged online in advance at (click on Music, then Concert Series). Choirmaster s Corner September Hymn of the Month Hymn # 385: Many and great, O God, are thy works is identified as a native Dakota air to which Joseph Renville attached his text. The text and tune were first published in the 1879 Dakota odowan. In keeping with a unison performance practice, the editors of our hymnal have suggested the use of a simple accompaniment on a percussion instrument. The text praises God and has lovely comparisons to the Dakota s love of earth, sky, stars, mountains, plains and water. september Children s &Youth Choir Schedules cherub choir Wednesday rehearsals 4:00-4:30 p.m. primary choir Wednesday rehearsals 4:35 5:10 p.m. junior choir Wednesday rehearsals 5:15 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 12 Sing with the Adult Choir 9:00 & 11:15 a.m. services Lunch served at 11:15 a.m. finished by 12:10 p.m. junior handbells Wednesday rehearsals 6:00 beginning September 1 youth choir Sunday rehearsals 5:00 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26 8:00 a.m. free breakfast 8:15 a.m. warm-ups Sing in church 9:00 a.m. service youth handbells Sunday rehearsals 4:30 5:00 p.m. Choir schedules are available at music, click on children s and youth choirs.

6 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY Earth Stewards: Hike Inn and Other Fall Happenings Earth Stewards wrapped up the summer with another wonderful outing to the Len Foote Hike Inn, a few miles from the beginning of the Appalachian Trail near Amicalola Falls, Georgia. As the name intimates, the Inn is reached by hiking about 5 miles in the relatively cool (especially by Atlanta standards) north Georgia Mountains. The hike provides a chance to shed the city and get in touch with the incredible beauty God surrounds us with in nature. And the experience grows from there as you reach the Inn, an environmentally friendly habitat with all the luxuries of a fine bed and breakfast including gourmet meals, hot showers with fluffy towels and most of the comforts of home. But the best part of the trip is always the evening spent on the Sunrise Deck and Star Base overlooking the mountains and sharing stories with friends old and new. It s a relaxing and rejuvenating trip that will be an annual treat offered to All Saints through Earth Stewards. Join us as you are able usually in late August when a retreat to the cool mountains is such a welcome respite from Atlanta s heat. In the fall, Earth Stewards hits the ground running with a variety of programs to engage the parish. Once again, we ll offer a Sunday school class, this time about Faith In Action. It will explore how other faith groups have heard the Lord s call and become advocates for the environment in their local community and the world. We are also actively involved in the Diocese of Atlanta s Creation Keepers. We hope many of you will be able to join us in Macon for a retreat at St. Francis on Saturday, September 18. It s a great chance to meet with the green teams from other Episcopal churches in our diocese and pick up ideas for furthering our care for creation. Contact Jan Douglas (pajjjm@bellsouth.net, ) or Marti Breen (mbreen@c3marketing.com, ) for details. Junior Earth Stewards will also swing back into action this fall. Check out the All Saints Earth Steward s Facebook group page often as we ll keep it updated with the latest activities of interest. Remember, pick up your CSA order every Wednesday this month, from 11:30-7:00 p.m. inside the entrance to Egleston Hall. Orders must be placed by Tuesday, online at Dear Father Geoffrey and friends at All Saints Church, Grace to you all and peace from God our Father and our Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ! 7 PAGES 6 & 7 Thinking of Including All Saints In Your Will? Planned gifts reach out over the decades and link us to the rich history of this parish. We received this note on July 12, 2010: Back in the late 1950s when I came to All Saints Rev. Milton Wood would tell us from the pulpit once a month, Be sure to remember All Saints in your will. Even though my work moved my family away from Atlanta in the early 1980 s we have always considered All Saints our parish home. I enclose a gift from my wife Betty s estate and want you to know All Saints is in my will as well. Regards, Tommy H. SPhil Cousineau, from The Art of Pilgrimage A transformational journey is an intentional experience, far away or nearby, that alters the way one views the world, the way one interacts with the world, the way one interacts with other people, or changes the view one has of oneself. It is an intentional journey, thoughtfully prepared for, that includes personal goal-setting, and if appropriate includes group goals. It is a time for asking questions, for seeking answers, for intense reflection and deepening an understanding of yourself and the world around you. Have you had a transformational journey recently either far away or close to home? If so, please share your story. Please us a description of your journey. With your permission, there is a possibility we will publish your remarks (or excerpts) as we explore together transformational journeys. 8 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY PAGE 8 Volunteers Help Make Threads a Success For me it has to do with the words of the baptismal covenant: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?... and respect the dignity of every human being? SThreads volunteer In August Threads celebrated six years of clothing children in need with dignity. The success of this ministry is due to the generosity of All Saints parishioners, other religious communities, civic groups, and individuals. This generosity is be effective because of the cadre of 50 plus All Saints members who donate their time to the operation of the shop. Some volunteers work on a regular basis donating several hours per week or month. Others are there on an as-needed basis, coming to the rescue in times of emergency. Some work directly with clients; others work when the shop is closed to inventory and sort clothes and restock the shelves. Early this spring, the shop was in desperate need of help. In a period of two weeks over two hundred children were clothed. Not only did all of these children and their parents need help in selecting their clothing, but the inventory had to be switched. On one Tuesday eight people heeded the call, emptied the shelves of winter clothing, restocked them with spring/summer clothing, and readied the shop for a deluge of clients on Thursday. Why do volunteers so generously give of their time? The reasons are as varied as the volunteers themselves. The satisfaction of knowing that needy children have something nice to wear tops the list. Some see the time spent as a change of pace from their hectic days and a chance to rejuvenate themselves. Others see it as an opportunity not only to clothe children but to help them focus their energies on their school work. Some volunteers even bring their own children to learn first hand how they can help others. Thank you to all of our hard-working volunteers who give and receive through Threads. Threads is always in need of additional volunteers whether on a regular weekly or monthly basis or just in times of emergency. To volunteer, call Lori Guarisco at or threads@allsaintsatlanta.org. The deadline for the October issue is Thursday, September 9.
