What do they say to us about who and what we are as Christians? Join the Rev d Milton Murray in a study of the Sunday lectionary and decide what you would say if you were climbing up into the pulpit. Thursdays in Lent, February 18 - March 25 11:00 a.m.- Noon in P201 Novel Theology Lost Horizon, by James Hilton This adventure featuring a disparate group of Westerners in flight from civil conflict in Afghanistan was written in 1933 but sounds like it could have been penned very recently. The escape takes them to an unplanned destination called Shangri-La, which this book introduced to our vocabulary, a nirvana on earth, yet like sanctuaries elsewhere, one that must resist the tug of the outside world. Wednesday, February 24 7:00 p.m. in P304, Parish Hall For further information contact Jerry Byrd: or jerald.byrd@comcast.net or visit /parishlife Popcorn Theology Pollock takes place in the post World War II art world of New York. The film looks at 10 pivotal years in the life of Jackson Pollock. It is an exploration of art and creativity embodied by the artist s volcanic talent. But as so often happens today, Pollock s rise to celebrity status as a great painter eventually gave way to his inner demons. This is an intelligent and passionate look inside the creative world. As always, there will be a thought provoking discussion following this movie. Friday, February 26 Showtime 7:00 p.m. in Ellis Hall $3 admission includes the movie, liquid refreshments and, of course, popcorn. For more information call Barbara Blender at 404/ or bblender@bellsouth.net. Couples Workshop Engaged, married and other couples are invited to attend. The workshop consists of a series of short talks on various aspects of relationship by trained, volunteer couples from the parish and exercises in which each participant shares thoughts, feelings and wishes with his or her partner. The focus is on building relationship skills such as active listening, conflict resolution, and on making a deliberate choice to love one s partner. Saturday, February 27 8:30 a.m. -4:30 p.m. in the Children s Chapel The workshop is a requirement for all couples to be married at All Saints and entails a registration fee of $50. Bach and his own Prelude and Fugue on Decatur Place (Hymn 51). A native of Virginia, Dr. Parris holds degrees from the University of North Carolina and the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, and has done post-doctoral study in Boston and Germany. The hymn has been used in various Lenten offices in the past; the current Roman use assigns it to the Office of Readings for Sundays during Lent. A nineteenth-century rural American tune, BOURBON, may have come from an Robert Parris Organ Concert and the Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church in Macon, the oldest church in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Elijah Craig. This hymn was printed in many shape-note books, the first appeared in the Shenandoah Valley Mennonite printer in The ASC Greeters and Newcomers Committee Wants YOU! Have you ever noticed the rolling cart in the front of the church on Sunday mornings? Sometimes it is terribly cold and sometimes awfully hot, yet our greeters are steadfast in their presence and attempt to provide a welcome and hospitality to visitors on Sunday mornings. Once our greeters meet someone new and have engaged them in some way, our team of note writers dutifully write notes of welcome to those who visit. We are looking to expand our team and would like to recruit additional greeters and note writers. The more friendly faces we have to welcome on Sunday mornings and the more writers we have sending letters of welcome the better. We would love to have you join in helping to provide hospitality on our campus. 6 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY After hearing the buzz about the Earth Stewards Food for the Soul sunday school class, you re convinced that supporting local, sustainable farming is the way to go. But it s winter and you might be wondering what local farmers can even provide in this weather and where to find them, if your local farmers market is closed for the season. Right now, local farmers are producing arugula, beans, beets, bok choi, braising greens, broccoli, butternut squash, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, celery, collard greens, kale, leeks, salad mix, radishes, rutabaga, spinach, sunchokes, sweet potatoes, turnips, and pecans, as well as grassfed beef, pastured pork, cheeses, and fresh eggs. Pastas, granolas, fresh baked breads, jams, jellies, salsas, mole, and honey are available year round. You can get this food by visiting one of the year-round farmers markets, visiting a specialty store, or joining a CSA. The Morningside Market is held on Saturdays from 8:00-11:30 a.m. on North Highland across from Alon s Bakery; it is year-round, 100% organic, and 100% local-the furthest farm travels just two hours to be at the market. The Decatur Farmers Market is held on Wednesdays from 3-6 pm in the winter (4:00-7:00 p.m. in the summer), at the corner of Church Street and Commerce Drive. Meeting the farmers Now You re Convinced about Local Food, What next? who have grown your food builds community and helps connect a daily, basic necessity to a nearby patch of God s creation. It is important to support those farmers that provide food at the few year-round markets; they get a lot of competition when the multitude of part-year markets start opening for the season in April. In the meantime, you can also find locally grown, organic food for sale at the Cabbagetown Market, Star Provisions, Harry s, Sevananda, and Whole Foods (check the labels). By joining a CSA - community supported agriculture - you can pay a flat rate and receive a box of fresh food from a local farm every week, year-round. Some CSAs allow members to select what they want to receive and others just provide a share of everything that was produced that week. When something you re unsure of turns up in the box, you have both an opportunity to exercise your creativity and a teachable moment. Children will eat more exotic foods when they know the story of where that food came from and when they get to help find and make a recipe from that food. How we choose to spend our money and feed our families can be a spiritual practice. Please consider a local food practice for Lent this year. You can find out more information about all the ways to access local, organic, sustainably produced food and all the information you need to support a one-100%-local-ingredients-meal-per-week practice at Transitions Transfers In Bob, Marian, Bailey Garrison, Sarah and Katherine Hull from St. Luke s in Atlanta Lisa Perry-Gilkes from Trinity Episcopal Church in Redlands, California Kathryn Carlson from the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene, Texas Jennifer Waters from St. Patrick s in Atlanta Stan and Agnes Browning Will and Kerry Dyer from St. Chrysostom in Chicago, Illinois Ryan Kelley from St. Andrew s Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi Jane Weston from St. James in San Francisco, California Mark Turner Tony Dahl from St. Mary the Virgin, Nassau, Bahamas John Yoo and Suzi Lee from The Anglican Church of Seoul, Korea Jane Murray from St. Anne s in Atlanta All Saints Episcopal Church Transfers Out Wesley and Tiffany Boozer to St. Anne s in Atlanta William Hargett to Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta Jeff and Caulie Hamling to St. David s in Roswell, Georia Births Cambria Zuri Kannan, daughter of Suresh and Suzanne Kannan Charles Patrick Viele Davidson, son of Charles and Laurence Davidson Baptisms Olivia Grace Hatfield, daughter of William and Katherine Hatfield Deaths John Herman Martin Mary Anastasia Dominick
