1 Volume 11, Issue 5 May 2013 Parish Picnic Brings the Farm to the Parish Mark your calendars now for the annual All Saints Parish Picnic! Following the theme of Farm to Parish, the church grounds will be transformed into a farm, allowing all us city folks to slow down and enjoy the pleasures our country cousins regularly experience. Adults and kids alike will delight in a farm-to-table menu from Five Star Culinary Group and parishioner, Alex Ottley. To make the meal completely eco-friendly, it will be served on fully compostable dinnerware! Kids will be entertained by a petting area with farm animals and pony rides for those under 75 pounds. Older youth will help with face painting and mug for the camera posing as farmers, bluegrass wannabes, or pickers. We ll also be joined by our friends from King of Pops and Moore Farms who ll have extra goodies available for purchase. Entertainment will be provided by Blue Grass Flash Mob, a talented mandolin, stand-up bass and violin group. We ll have a visit from Moore Farms with an old fashioned farmer s market table so you can sample fresh produce straight from their farm. Don t forget to bring a bit of extra cash to partake of the Moore Farm s Market, wine, local beer keg, and King of Pops cart. Some of the centerpieces and other decorations will also be available for sale. And of course, the picnic will feature the annual dessert contest, but this time with a twist. Besides the usual categories for adult and kid creations, we ll have a special 50 miler category. To win its special prize, your dessert must be made from ingredients that come from within 50 miles of the parish so put on your thinking caps and pull out your recipe boxes/books. Extra dessert contest judges and volunteers are needed; contact Marti Breen (see below) to offer your services. Sunday, June 2 11:30 2:00 p.m. in the courtyard (following the 10:00 a.m. worship service) Costs are $12 per adult and $6 per kid (ages 2 to 12-years-old), or $40 for the family. Children 2-years-old and younger are free. Book your spot now at the Parish Life table between services during May or go online to register at allsaintsatlanta.org. For more information contact Marti Breen at or mbreen@ c3marketing.com. It s time to save the date for All Saints Kanuga 2013! Join us for our annual parish retreat the weekend of October 4 6. As always, this year s retreat will provide a wonderful opportunity to relax, reflect, renew old friendships and make new ones, all in the spectacular setting of the North Carolina mountains. This year s Kanuga chairs, David Dean and Kathleen Clark, together with co-chairs Luke and Elizabeth Barton, are planning a fun-filled schedule that has something for everyone. The weekend will kick off Friday afternoon with a welcoming reception hosted by the Bartons, and that evening will feature our very own All Saints Idol, a talent show for the whole family, so dust off those dancing shoes, brush up those comedy routines, and get ready to strut your stuff for your fellow Saints. (Judges panel TBA nominations are welcome)! continued on page 8

Chuck Konas reported on behalf of the Construction Committee, noting that Julie Sloan, the church s consultant on our stained glass windows, is one of the premier stained glass window consultants in the country. The vestry was encouraged to visit her website at and to make sure parishioners are aware of the high quality advice we are getting on our stained glass window repairs. The vestry unanimously adopted the annual budget. While tight, the budget as presented is balanced with just over $3 million in revenues and expenses. The Senior Warden reported that the church is negotiating a five year extension of the Bright Horizons contract. 8 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY PAGE 8 Kanuga 2013 (continued from page 1) We are especially delighted to welcome Congregational minister, television host, and acclaimed author Lillian Daniel to lead this year s adult program on Saturday morning. Widely praised for her sharp wit, engaging style, and her perceptives about what it means to be part of a faith community in today s world, Daniel will lead a program at Kanuga that will draw from her latest book, When Spiritual But not Religious Is Not Enough: Seeing God in Surprising Places, Even the Church. Children s and youth programs will also be provided so that everyone who likes will be free to participate. Daniel serves as the senior minister of the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, United Church of Christ, in the Chicago area. She is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, has been host of the Chicago-based television show 30 Good Minutes, and is the author of several books, including Tell it Like it Is: Reclaiming the Practice of Testimony, and This Odd and Wondrous Calling: The Public and Private Lives of Two Ministers. As one reviewer put it, Lillian Daniel is the funniest writer I know in the Church, and therefore one of the wisest. She challenges the spiritual but not religious to do something genuinely bold and innovative join the ordinary batch of believers trying to live out faith in the company of others. Other weekend activities include a Friday night party, the Saturday morning fun run, polar bear swim, a hard-fought kickball game (parents vs. kids), tennis, and the now famous/ infamous scavenger hunt. There will be plenty of time to kick back and relax, take a walk in the woods, or go apple picking at nearby Sky Top Orchard. Fun is guaranteed for all at Saturday s family band party and game night, and on Sunday we ll gather in the lovely Kanuga Chapel for a morning service led by Lillian Daniel, concluded, as always, with a rousing rendition of When the Saints Come Marching In! Space is limited and goes quickly, so be sure to sign up early and take advantage of the summer installment plan for payments. We look forwarding to seeing you there!
