1 Volume 9, Issue 5 May 2011 Farm to Parish Picnic Table Our annual parish picnic will be Sunday, June 5, here at All Saints. The evening will begin with evening worship in the chapel at 5:30 p.m. with music food and fun beginning at 6:00 p.m. We will feature many of our past favorites including the dessert contest and the kids water park. Milkshake Mayfield and his band are coming back to help us shake our tailfeathers to live jazz. This year Mike and Leslie Aiken will chair the event and they will be presenting a farm-to-table menu of local, organic and DELI- CIOUS food. Leslie told us a little about her own family s process of choosing how and what they eat. We wanted to do the farm-to-table theme because it is the best thing for the environment and the best thing for us to eat. Local, organic and seasonal foods are what is the best for the earth and surprisingly (well, not really) the best thing for us. There are not as many of our earth s resources used up when you buy locally. The food is fresher and it often tastes better. With organic foods, there are no harmful pesticides or chemicals used in the process of the food. It is extremely important to me to keep my family and myself as healthy as possible, and we eat as much organic food as we can. At this year s picnic, you ll be able to enjoy fresh veggie and fruit side dishes in season, as well as meat from a local farm. Eating better from products produced sustainably fills our bodies in a positive way and ultimately when ours bodies feel good, then our spirits will as well. If we can make decisions that will help our earth and ourselves, then we are called to do so. It is a conscious decision that will help mind, body and soul. What could be a better way to enjoy each other s company? 2011 Parish Picnic Chairs Leslie and Mike Aiken

4 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY Coming Up Celebrate Haiti: A Festival of Art & Craft, Entertainment and Food Purchase beautiful art and craft direct from Haiti. Enjoy music, storytelling; and island food and beverages. Bring the entire family special fun and games for children of all ages Saturday, May 7 1:00-5:00 p.m. Episcopal Church of the Epiphany 2089 Ponce de Leon Ave., Atlanta Proceeds will benefit the Business and Technical Institute in Les Cayes, Haiti. For more information call or visit Novel Theology The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barbery Our rector leads a discussion of this book which was a recent bestseller in Europe. This story features an intellectual middle-aged concierge of an exclusive Paris apartment building and a 12- year-old resident there who has determined there is nothing endearing about life. Through their encounters, this text becomes a philosophical discourse on the privileges of the rich, on beauty and art, on the meaning of life and death. Wednesday, May 18 7:00 p.m. in the Skylight Room Popcorn Theology May closes our season with the classic On Golden Pond. The film deals with familiar subjects broken families, aging, miscommunication. Who, in 2011, does not deal with some of that on a day to day basis? Told from the perspective of a New England landscape, we watch various relationships within a family change and grow all the while learning to forget and forgive. For better or worse, do we ever really recover from our childhoods? We look forward to an interesting discussion after the movie. Friday, May 20 Showtime 7:00 p.m. in the Horseshoe Room (Enter from parking lot at the door to church offices.) $3 admission includes the movie, liquid refreshments and, of course, popcorn. For more information call Barbara Blender at 404/ or bblender@bellsouth.net. Coming in June Kanuga 2011 Already? Annual Parish Picnic Mark your calendar for our Parish Picnic! 6 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY Guide Book and Directory Advertising Opportunity All Saints has contracted with Guide Book Publishing to publish a guide book and print directory for our parish that will be updated and delivered directly to your home annually. The book will be the who, what, where, when, why and how of our parish, and is being provided at no cost to the church. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show many families would rather patronize a local business known to the community. It will pay to advertise in our new guide book and directory. We must have all information collected by May 30 if you would like your business to be included in this book. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please contact Lauri Begley at or lbegley@allsaintsatlanta.org. Update Your Membership Information Does our church database have your family membership information correct? Have you changed your phone numbers? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Would you like your name, address, and address published in our guide book and directory? It s time for us to update our database, so here s your chance to update your records for our annual guide book and directory with any changes, additions, deletions that have have occurred in your family over the past year. If you have not already informed the church office about changes to your record, please let us know so that the information in the guide book and directory is correct. To update your information, please contact Betsey Gibbs at or at BGibbs@allsaintsatlanta.org. 7 PAGES 6 & 7 Vestry Notes From the meeting on March 21, 2011 Steve McGehee, on spring break from Virginia Theological Seminary, came to the meeting to update the vestry on his status. Now finishing his second year, he thanked all for the support of the parish and parishioners. Winifred Davis stated that there continues to be good news and that a number of LYBUNTS have made pledges. Ellen Hayes said that the numbers are almost identical to last year. More and more parishioners are using automatic deductions for their pledge payments. Martie Zakas presented the Budget for She commented that the budget keeps the discount for unpaid pledges at two percent and that the lease situation with Goodfellas is now good. She stated that it would be tough to control utilities with increasing costs. The budget was approved by the vestry. The budget does reflect a warranted cost of living adjustment for staff. It does not have a maintenance reserve. The recommendation of the finance committee to use a portion of the overage from 2010 would help balance the budget for Without repeated generosity, there will be budget concerns for Elizabeth Shows Caffey reminded all that eight men from the Covenant Community will graduate on March 31. She also said that the Community members would begin wearing nametags when they are working on the campus. A bulletin board will feature the graduates. The luncheon held for those involved with refugee ministries on March 20 had over 75 in attendance. All vestry meetings are open and meet at 4:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Parish House with dates announced in The All Saints Monthly. may youth calendar Sunday, May 1 Senior Recognition Sunday Sunday school No SNL Sunday, May 8 Sunday school Confirmation Rehearsal for 10th grade 10:20 a.m. in the church No SNL Saturday, May 14 Rite 13 Rehearsal 5:00 p.m. in church followed by dinner in Ellis Hall This month, you might notice a strong focus on our youth during worship. We have three Sundays in May in which our teenagers will particpate in visible and meaningful ways within our community. We begin on May 1with our senior recognition Sunday. Four graduating high school seniors will address the congregation from the pulpit, two at each service. They will share their insights about God s work in their lives and their time here at All Saints. Other graduating seniors will also be on hand to be recognized and thanked for their contribution to our community. On May 15 we will celebrate the Rite 13 Liturgy, celebrating our students that have May is Youth Month at All Saints recently turned 13. In this liturgy, we acknowledge that these teens are in transition from childhood to adulthood and we offer the support of the community to help them through this time with the wisdom and love given to us by God in the Body of Christ. On May 22nd, The Right Reverend Keith Whitmore will be at All Saints for confirmation Sunday. In the liturgy of confirmation, our students take ownership of their baptismal vows, make an adult affirmation of faith and graduate into lay ministry within our community. Generally speaking, we have between 15 and 20 teenage students confirmed each year. May is an exciting month in the life of our teens and of our parish. Join us in our support of them.
