Stop by the parish life table or contact Lauri Begley at or lbegley@allsaintsatlanta.org. Novel Theology Barabbas, by Pär Lagerkvist The Swedish author, winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize for Literature, gets inside the mind and soul of the man whom Jesus was sent to replace on the cross. This story imagines Barabbas reactions following the spread of testimonies in the Middle East about the Crucifixion and Resurrection, and it establishes a new sense of wonderment about our hope and faith in the life of the world to come. Wednesday, March 24 7:00 p.m. in P304, Parish Hall For further information contact Jerry Byrd: or jerald.byrd@comcast.net or visit /parishlife Popcorn Theology This month we will show The Verdict. The story centers on an emotionally bankrupt attorney who takes what he believes is his last case a malpractice suit against a Catholic hospital. Initially just going through the motions, he finds himself personally involved and seeking some form of redemption as he plunges deeper into the convoluted maneuverings of the organizations involved. This film is as much a complex character study as it is a thriller that ponders the value of idealism in a cynical world. The Verdict is poetic and intelligent and is sure to provoke a fascinating discussion. Friday, March 26 Showtime 7:00 p.m. in Ellis Hall $3 admission includes the movie, liquid refreshments and, of course, popcorn. For more information call Barbara Blender at 404/ or bblender@bellsouth.net. More Chances To Celebrate Christmas! It is only March, you re thinking, why in the world are we thinking of Christmas? Because exciting changes are afoot and we wanted to make sure the whole community knows about them! Many, in fact very many, of you were in attendance at our Christmas Eve services in We had the largest attendance at Christmas in nearly a decade and it looks as if we will continue in a growing trend. Our 5:00 p.m. service, especially, is growing in leaps and bounds as our children s choirs have come to be an incredible part of Christmas Eve worship for so many families. In order to alleviate some of the seating issues at our 5:00 p.m. worship service, we are going to add another worship service to our Christmas Eve schedule. Our new schedule will look like this: 1:00 p.m. Christmas Lessons and Carols 3:00 p.m. Holy Eucharist Rite II with the Junior Choir 5:00 p.m. Holy Eucharist Rite II with the Youth Choir He performs in concert throughout the world, and has been a featured performer at the national convention of the American Guild of Organists. Dr. Parris program will include the complete Sowerby Symphony in G, along with works by J.S. Bach, and his own Prelude and Fugue on Decatur Place (Hymn 51). Dr. Robert Parris Tuesday, March 9 7:30 p.m. in the church Tickets are $10 adult and $5 student/senior, and are available at the door, or online at /music (then click on Concert Series). 7:30 p.m. Holy Eucharist Rite II with the Adult Choir (7:00 p.m. choral prelude) 10:30 p.m. Holy Eucharist Rite II with the Adult Choir (10:00 p.m. choral prelude) As always, we are all excited to see how Karol Kimmell and her phenomenal choirs will fill our new Christmas Eve addition with Spirit-filled and worshipful music. march Youth & Children s Choir Schedules cherub & primary choirs Palm Sunday, March 28 Sing for worship 9:00 a.m. service in Ellis Hall Arrive at 8:15 a.m. junior choirs & handbells Sunday, March 21 Lent 5 Sing for worship 11:15 a.m. service in church Bells arrive at 10:30 a.m., Choir arrive at 10:45 a.m. Weekly Rehearsals Cherub Choir Wednesdays, 4:00-4:30 p.m. Primary Choir Wednesdays, 4:35-5:10 p.m. Junior Choir Wednesdays, 5:15-6:00 p.m. Junior Handbells Wednesdays, 6:00-6:30 p.m. Youth Handbells Sundays, 4:30-5:00 p.m. Youth Choir Sundays, 5:00-6:00 p.m. Choir schedules available on the All Saints website;
6 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY Threads Reaches Out to Over 150 Refugee Children Since its inception Threads has worked with multiple agencies in providing clothing for refugee children. For many, though, transportation to the All Saints campus is difficult if not impossible. Recently a fortuitous series of events made it possible to reach out to a larger population of these children. Over 150 items of winter clothing have been donated to students attending the Dekalb County International Student Center on North Druid Hills Road. It all began through contacts established by former parishioner Lisa Venable who had worked closely with Threads and the refugee population. Through her contacts, Threads volunteer Bob Miller raided the Lost and Found Department at Henderson Middle School. He left the school with his van packed full of items not claimed by middle school students. Next, Elizabeth Nadell and her daughter Caroline spent one Saturday sorting through the items to select those that were in good condition. They found over 200 fleeces, hoodies, sweatshirts, and shorts. After multiple loads through the washer and dryer, the clothing was ready for distribution. In the meantime Sally Bayless received an from a neighbor who teaches at the International Student Center detailing the plight of the 400+ students at the school. In the cold of winter many of them arrive at school without coats or socks, wearing sandals. Threads has donated a coat rack to the school and stocked it with winter clothes for the students. Through the efforts of many volunteers, Threads has been able to reach out to refugee children in a way that it has not been able to do up until this time. Lori points out that there are many refugees in the metro Atlanta area that need our help. The need is only going to become greater. The Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Service of Atlanta expects a large influx of new refugees, victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. With the continued donations of clothing and money by the parishioners of All Saints, this ministry will be able to improve the situation of those who have come to this country in the hope of a better life. THE CORNERSTONE SOCIETY comprises over 130 parishioners who have made planned gifts to All Saints from the resources that God has provided over their lifetimes. Cornerstone is the ultimate way to support All Saints. To learn more about The Cornerstone Society, contact Winifred Davis, 404/ Vestry Notes From the meeting on January 18, 2010 Stewardship reported that the number of pledges received and dollars pledged is approximately equal to last year, but the total amount is approximately $80,000 below the campaign s goal. Calls are taking place next week in an effort to reduce the shortfall. Winifred Davis also discussed the Cornerstone Society and the ministry of planned giving, noting that there are currently 134 members and spring events are being planned. From the Treasurer: preliminary year-end financials indicate that All Saints will end 2009 with a surplus (versus a budgeted deficit of $19,000). Year-end pledge receipts were strong and expenses were well managed, particularly in the area of personnel expenses budget discussions are ongoing as pledge results come in. Geoffrey discussed the All Saints 2020 Group and presented a draft of the charge to the Group, which will oversee and implement the recommendations of the Strategic Thinking Group. The vestry approved the appointment of Elizabeth Robertson as chair of the group and Clay Jackson as Chair of the Campus Plan sub-group. Noelle York-Simmons reported that adult formation has started the New Year with a bang, with three full classes with over 200 in attendance. Chuck Girardeau reported that the first meeting regarding ways to improve the Sunday morning nursery was held on January 10th, with a dozen or so parents and staff on hand to discuss communications, staff, facilities and program. John Herring reported that the Summer Mission Trip will be in Nashville July Richard Hall reported that Global missions will again sponsor the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper on February 16th and the proceeds will go to support an adult pilgrimage to Rio de Janeiro in June. Sherry Terlemezian reported on Parish Life and highlighted the greeters and newcomers ministry, which is looking to expand, especially for the 11:15 service. The goal is to have at least 2 greeters on duty for each service. All Vestry meetings are open and meet at 4:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Parish House with dates announced in The All Saints Monthly. All Saints Episcopal Church
7 Midtown Assistance Center Food Drive, February 17- March 28 The Midtown Assistance Center is a core ministry of All Saints. Each year volunteers devote considerable time and energy to this ministry which was started on the All Saints campus 22 years ago. During Lent the Parish collects non-perishable food and household items to help stock the food pantry at MAC. The difficult financial times we are experiencing are even more acutely felt by the working poor of Atlanta s mid-city and inner city neighborhoods. Consequently, the need for food has risen dramatically, and the pantry depletes very Transitions Births Jeffrey Alexander, son of Jeffrey and Betsy Gaccione Eva Anne, daughter of Stan and Agnes Browning Emerson Charles, son of Scott and Aimee Browne Baptisms Dabney Alice Bond, daughter of Watts and Karen Bond Jeffrey Alexander Gaccione, son of Jeffrey and Betsy Gaccione Hannah Annette Sullivan, daughter of Michael and Annette Sullivan Henry Alan Yates, son of Alton Yates and Perry Offen Yates Austin Tegyu Yoo, son of John and Suzi Yoo Bay Everett Brooks, daughter of Steve and Kelly Brooks Cambria Zuri Kannan, daughter of Suresh and Suzanne Kannan Anna Grier McGhee, daughter of John and Suzanne McGhee Daniela Lucille Ornelas, daughter of Fernando Ornelas and Susan Walker Mariana Faith Ornelas, daughter of Fernando Ornelas and Susan Walker Chad Daly Caraballo, son of Larry and Trudy Caraballo quickly. You may also make donations by check, which should be payable to All Saints and clearly marked For MAC Food Drive, and be given to any volunteer or to Richard Hall. 8 THE ALL SAINTS MONTHLY PAGE 8 Easter Etiquette at All Saints We have a fantastic problem at All Saints. Our worship services on Easter morning are so glorious, so spirit-filled and celebratory that we are bursting at the seams with folks, parishioners and visitors alike. Easter is one of two days each year when we can count on seeing just about everyone and meeting some new faces as well. This is a remarkable way to celebrate the glory of the Resurrection! But even though it is a good problem to have it does pose well a problem. In recent years, the large crowd that gathers for a seat at our services has gotten out of hand. We have had incidents of rowdiness and rudeness unbecoming of Christians in any situation, but especially inappropriate on one of the holiest days of our Christian calendar. To help ensure a more worshipful experience for parishioner and visitor alike at all of our Easter services, the doors for the 9:00 a.m. service will be opened at 8:45 a.m. This allows people in the 8:00 a.m. service in the chapel to worship without the distraction of the crowd coming into the main sanctuary. Additionally, the back door to the chapel and the stairs leading to it will be exit only until 9:00 a.m. to allow early worshipers to exit the building (for those needing to use the elevator, please ask an usher for assistance). For the 11:15 a.m. service, the doors will open at 10:45 a.m. Our hard working and dutiful ushers will be on hand to assure that these transitions take place quickly and efficiently. We will have coffee and Easter treats available in the courtyard before and after services. The library and Ellis foyer will be open if you need restrooms or to get out of inclimate weather. New changes can be difficult to negotiate and those of us who have worked hard to implement this plan are aware that it is not a panacea. Please be patient and help us welcome these changes with a spirit of Christian charity and a good sense of humor. The deadline for the April issue is Thursday, March 4.
