Jim Mc Closkey still needs a few members to volunteer for the ARC collection on April 7 and 8. More than 100 of us have not signed up and we need only a few more. Please help. It s one of the most important things the council does every year. Let s all welcome the new members who came into the council. (See page 4). We have a few other prospects who need to attend the 1st Degree but all of us need to keep recruiting more members! Everything you need to know about recruiting is on the council website. The Family Bowling, Pasta Supper and Baby Shower were a great success. Thanks to Mark Kucharski, Rich Mirocco and others who helped. 2 DID JESUS REALLY EXIST? Dear Friends, When we wish each other Happy Easter, we are proclaiming a fundamental truth of faith and history. Easter brings so many promises of God to us, life is stronger than death, love can overcome hate, goodness ultimately triumphs over evil, and eternal glory with God in Heaven is our destiny. Yes, that is our faith based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ in the Bible. But there are some people who refuse to believe in the historicity of Jesus. They even claim that Jesus did not exist and reject the biblical evidence as biased. But there are non-biblical writers who have mentioned the existence of Jesus Christ. Roman politicians Pliny and Tacitus, and a prominent Jewish historian of the first century Flavius Josephus are among the non-biblical writers whose writings are considered credible by historians and scholars. Here s what Josephus wrote: Now, there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as received the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day, as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day. (Antiquities, Book 18, chapter 3, section 3). These and other non-biblical writings establish the historicity of Jesus beyond doubt. Compare that with, for example, King Arthur, who supposedly lived around AD500. The major historical source for events of that time does not even mention Arthur, and he is first referred to 300 or 400 years after he is supposed to have lived. The evidence for Jesus is not limited to later folklore, as are accounts of Arthur. Hence any challenge to the reality of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is no more entertained in educated circles. No matter what, we continue to proclaim this truth of history and faith all the more joyfully: He is risen, Halleluiah! Yes, he is risen indeed! Happy Easter! Your brother in the Risen Savior, Fr. 4 One Knight transferred into our council and three other Knights completed both Admission and Formation Degrees on March 13 in Basking Ridge. Bob Hugelmeyer (left) came to our council from the Middlesex Council 857 in Woodbridge where he had attained his 3rd Degree. (His dad, also named Bob, is a member of Council 857 and has been a Knight for over 50 years!) Bob lives in Glen Gardner with his wife, Casey and their 3 sons, Robert (8), Jesse (5) and Gus (3). Bob is a Vice Principal in Woodbridge Township. Matt Hall (right) and his wife Sarah live in Hampton with daughters Madeline (6) and Juliette (3). Matt is the Borough of Washington Town Manager. Kevin Speckin (left) a teacher at the Warren Township Middle School, and his wife, O Brien, live in High Bridge with their children Mary (11) Finn (9), Nora (7), Lyla (5) and Rayna (4). Steve Kallesser, (right) a Forester, his wife Patricia and their children Antonio (9), Domenico (7) and Anna (5 months) also live in Clinton. Our annual drive to benefit the ARC of Hunterdon will be on Saturday April 7 and Sunday, April 8. Invite your spouse, sons & daughters and friends to help! One year, a member brought his Golden Retriever and it got a lot of attention and he had a great 2-hour collection! (Maybe if he d had a Pit Bull it might not have been as successful.) BTW I m not denigrating Pit Bulls. I m just sayin! I know some fine Pit Bulls so please don t sic the dog lovers on me! If you've already signed-up and have a problem getting to your shift notify the council Community Director, Jim McCloskey at THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING! 4

5 Spelling Bee Chairman Steve Bauernfeind assisted by council brothers Tom Klawunn and Jim McCloskey conducted the regional spelling bee for the Diocese of Metuchen. It was hosted at St. Ann School in Raritan by Hugh Gallagher of Sgt. John Basilone Council # Congratulations to the regional champions who are eligible to compete at the state finals in Brick on April 8! Thanks to Mark, Jennifer, Lucy and Lily Kucharski for organizing the pasta supper, setting up the Church Hall and preparing and serving the food (photos on next page). Thanks also to brother Rich Mirocco, brother Tom Waldron and Jill Gallico for clean up. The supper hosted by the council for parishioners was the kick-off for our annual Baby Shower collection organized by brother Rich Mirocco. In addition to the many Baby Shower gifts (photo below), free will offerings exceeded $300 and other monetary donations were received from parishioners which will be included with our gifts to Life Choices Pregnancy Center and the Friendship Center for New Beginnings.
