2 Fr. Abraham Orapankal Fr. Abraham, our Council Chaplain, has been reassigned to St. Matthias Parish in Somerset by Bishop James Checchio. The change was sudden and necessitated by the financial problems revealed at St. Matthias (and the resignation of their pastor, Father Douglas J. Haefner). Fr. Abraham was asked to leave St. John Neumann Parish to help straighten out the mess in the Somerset parish. Fr. Abraham s reassignment means that he will be far too busy to continue contributing his monthly Reflection column to this newsletter. Fr. Abraham has faithfully provided us with those wonderful messages for the past five years! His messages will be missed, he will be missed, and we all owe him our appreciation! Please pray for our loyal and faithful Chaplain as he transitions to his new assignment. The Knights of Columbus 5th Sunday Rosary Program encourages greater devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Devotions are conducted following the 11am Mass at St. Joseph Church on each 5th Sunday with the assistance of the St. Joseph Parish Altar Rosary Society. The rosary offers a great opportunity for all parishioners and their families. Members are encouraged to attend with their families. Please plan to attend! Pray too for the parishioners at St. John Neumann who have lost him as their shepherd, and for the parishioners at St. Matthias who were the victims of negligence and who knows what else! While you are praying, remember also to pray for our Church. 2

3 Our Mayflower Connection! Several readers commented favorably on my Bully Pulpit article about Thanksgiving in the November issue of Knight Worthy News. (My thanks to all who did so!) The article also prompted a very interesting response from our Past Grand Knight, Ken Brown. Brother Ken explains that Thanksgiving is a very special holiday to him it s his family holiday as he traces his family lineage directly back to the Pilgrims. In fact, Ken is a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins! Ken s father s side of the family attended the very first Thanksgiving celebration. As we can remember from elementary school, John and Priscilla came to America on the Mayflower in 1620 and married. Their first of ten children was a daughter, Elizabeth (Elisabeth). Elisabeth married William Pabodie and they are Ken s 8th great-grandparents! In 1684, William and Elisabeth settled in Little Compton, Rhode Island (then a part of the Plymouth Colony ). William, who had succeeded Alexander Standish (son of Capt. Myles Standish who had married Barbara Mullins) as the Duxbury, (Massachusetts) town clerk, became Little Compton's first town clerk. William died in 1707 at age 88 and Elisabeth followed him in 1717, at age 94. Generations later, Ken s own father was born nearby. Elisabeth s monument in the Old Burying Ground cemetery in Little Compton contains Elisabeth s original gravestone (at left) and another inscription (at right). 7 13 Tons of Food and Thousands of Dollars Donated! A unique partnership involving parishioners of St. Joseph Church, Shop Rite of Clinton and the St. Joseph Council continues to benefit the Open Cupboard Food Pantry in Clinton. The parish conducts a monthly food drive for the pantry that produced nearly a ton of food for the pantry during a recent 12-month period. Parishioners supplement their food donations with an annual special collection for the Food Pantry conducted by the Council. Using more than $1,100 from that recent collection, supplemented by council funds, we were able to purchase and donate $2,800 in Shop Rite gift cards to the food pantry. The cards will be used to assist clients of the food pantry during the Christmas season. The ongoing partnership also includes the Shop Rite of Clinton super market that generously provides twice-weekly food donations for the pantry. In the past year alone, Shop Rite donated 9 tons of baked goods for the food pantry and Shop Rite donated more than 500 new woven polypropylene shopping Photo: Rev. Shop Rite also permits the Council to maintain a separate collection rack at the market for customers to donate additional food. It produced almost 3 additional tons of food donations during that period. The combined total food donations from all three sources amounted to more than a ton every month! Those efforts are also part of the Knights of Columbus Food for Families Program that provides additional financial support to local councils based on the amount of food and money contributed locally. Open Cupboard Food Pantry Executive Director Anne Underhill described how grateful the food pantry clients are, especially at Christmas time when they receive the Shop Rite gift cards. Anne thanked the parish and the Knights for their role, adding, we couldn t do it without you. In addition, the Knights provided nearly 400 hours of volunteer time at the food pantry assisting clients and delivering to shut-in clients of the pantry. Another group of Knights also handle the twice-weekly food pickups at Shop Rite and the monthly pickup at St. Joseph Church adding another 250 hours to the volunteer time. The value of those 650 volunteer hours by Knights as determined by the Independent Sector, a coalition of charities, foundations, corporations, and individuals that publishes research important to the nonprofit sector, was more than $18,000! The support for the food pantry has been ongoing for several years and our partnership with St. Joseph Church, supported by Shop Rite and its customers, continue to provide significant support for the community. Brother Donald Branflick coordinates the council s Food for Families efforts. 7
