1 Knight Worthy News St. Joseph Council 10627, High Bridge, New Jersey A Catholic men s organization promoting Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Family and Patriotism April 2016 (Area Code 908 unless otherwise noted) Brothers all, N ow that we've celebrated Easter and the Lord Jesus is risen, our thoughts naturally turn to Golf! Kidding!...but only partially kidding. Please read our spiritual devotions committee chair Bruce Teeling's about carrying forward the spiritual momentum that we developed during Lent. Try to do something to further your spiritual commitment, Bruce offers several good suggestions! Thanks to Bruce for bringing our need for spirituality to the forefront. Now onto golf! Please be thinking about any opportunity you might have to get a new sponsor, someone you've done business with in the past who may want to reward your patronage by becoming a golf sponsor. Remind them that all our proceeds go back into the community through donations and charitable acts. Don't forget to contact those you have in the past 2 years to ask them to recommit. Also think about getting your foursome together. The golf committee does not care how bad your golf swing looks, it's all about camaraderie and fun...and earning the money to fund our council's activities. Come out one and all! 2 BIG EASTER AND LITTLE EASTERS! Happy Easter! We observed Lent. We walked with the suffering Jesus to Calvary and rejoiced with the celebration of the Resurrection. Now, how can we live the meaning of Easter? Naming the subsequent Sundays as 2 nd Sunday of Easter, 3 rd Sunday of Easter, etc., is one way to impress upon us the centrality of this event in our lives. Historically, Easter (not Christmas) was the first holy day that Christians began to celebrate. It is the very foundation on which Christianity rests. No wonder St. Paul wrote that if Christ did not rise from the dead, then our faith is futile and we are of all people most to be pitied ( 1 Corinthians 15:16-19). That is why Easter is the most important day in the liturgical calendar. It is the Sunday of Sundays, the very center point of our faith. That s why all other Sundays are called little Easters celebrating the Easter event all through the year. That would explain why Sundays don t technically count among the 40 days of Lent (there are actually 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, each year). Thus each of the 52 Sundays of the year, regardless of the Seasons of the Liturgical Calendar, is a little Easter celebration of the Resurrection. So the question remains: how do we live the meaning of Easter? Think of some of the good practices we began during Lent Fr. Abraham Orapankal and thank God for the advance we made in our spiritual life. Now, can we think of one action or practice we need to do so that we can grow stronger in our faith? It may be a daily devotion of one s choice, a daily Bible reading, listening to some Christian radio stations or some illuminating CDs in the car, watching some Catholic/Bible themed TV programs, practicing a specific Corporal Works of Mercy anything that will enhance our communion with and knowledge of Jesus Christ. 3 St. Joseph Council was chartered by the Knights of Columbus on May 9, The council mission, with St. Joseph as our patron, is to promote the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism among our members, their families and our parish communities. Past Grand Knights Chris Wade, Wayne McKay, Bill Cerwinski and John Furnari have planned a celebration to recognize our 25th Anniversary at 7pm on April 28th. Members are invited to join us as we recognize the dedicated service performed by our charter members and others who have made our council a great addition to our church and community. 3

5 2016 ARC COLLECTION The annual collection at Shop Rite of Clinton to benefit the ARC of Hunterdon is Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17. We still need a few more volunteers. Volunteer at Contact Community Director Robert Young at (908) for information. This is a great way for members to participate in a very easy but important council activity especially members who aren t able to help in other ways. If you have volunteered please don t forget to show up!!! The schedule as of March 31 is at left. 5

6 John D. Rockefeller once said, Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing. Much later, Bill Gates said, If I was down to the last dollar of our marketing budget, I d spend it on PR! In our business, letting others learn about the right things we do doesn t even require a budget. It requires only letting the communications media know what we are doing and what we ve accomplished. They ve been very responsive by publishing our releases, which serves the purposes of promoting the Order, promoting the council and recognizing other organizations and individuals who have benefitted by the right things we ve done. So, we are certainly heeding Mr. Rockefeller s advice about letting people know we are doing the right thing. It s up to all of us to ensure that we keep doing the right things by supporting council activities. Without that support we ll have no right things to promote! 6

7 The council hosted its annual Pasta Supper for parishioners at St. Joseph Church. A Free Will Offering was requested to benefit the 2016 Baby Shower which is celebrated every year during March. The shower proceeds go to the Life Choices Pregnancy Center in Phillipsburg and the Friendship Center for New Beginnings in Flemington. Thanks to all who made the event a success! Baby gifts collected at the Bourbon Street Wine & Spirits store in Califon were added to the gifts collected during the council s annual Baby Shower collection producing a truck that was full from one end to the other.
