1 Knight Worthy News St. Joseph Council 10627, High Bridge, New Jersey A Catholic men s organization promoting Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Family and Patriotism September 2018 Brothers all, We have a busy month coming up! I hope you will be available to work with and for the council. We have the annual 9-11 mass at St. Joseph Church. Our annual Soccer Challenge is on Saturday, September 15. The annual St. John Neumann golf tournament also is on September 15. A membership drive at St. Joseph Church that will require your help on two weekends after masses. All council of icers and directors are also needed to attend a special energize our council meeting at PGK Bill Cerwinski's home on Tuesday, September 18. A new Holy Hour for Life on September 20 organized by the St. Joseph Respect Life Committee. It will be held on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The Holy Hour is also one of the new activities the Supreme Council expects councils to support! The annual St. John Neumann picnic is on September 23. Our Installation of Of icers will precede our membership meeting on September 27. Don t blink! Thanks for what you do. It s you guys who make this council so great! 2 WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES! Dear Friends, Half a million Catholics attended the Mass that Pope Francis offered in Ireland last Sunday at the culmination of a week-long celebration of the Ninth World Meeting of Families from 100 countries. Its overarching theme, The Gospel of the Family The Joy of the World was chosen by Pope Francis from the opening lines of his Apostolic Exhortation on the family: The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia). The participants studied this document last week, reflecting on key issues and challenges of keeping the family in the faith of Jesus Christ in modern times. Maybe many of you watched some of the events. I watched the Festival of Families on Saturday afternoon a spectacular concert-like event of singing and family-themed presentations held at the 82,000 strong Croke Park Stadium, Dublin. The highlight was the testimony from six families chosen from different countries. The first was a family from Mumbai, India: Ted & Nisha D Costa and their three children. They explained how constant use of technology often prevented them from having a meaningful time and interaction with their kids and when it affected the good of their family, they decided to take part-time jobs and spend more time as family. Their oldest child wanted to sign up for Facebook, but they told her NO until she reached 16! That teenager didn t like it but later on testified that she saw the wisdom in her parents decision. When Pope Francis gave his remarks at the end of the event, he said this: Thank you Nisha and Ted, for your testimony from India, where you are teaching your children how to be a true family. You have helped us to understand that social media are not necessarily a problem for families, but can also serve to build a web of friendships, solidarity and mutual support. Families can connect through the internet and draw nourishment from it. Social media can be beneficial if used with moderation and prudence. For example, all of you gathered for this World Meeting of Families Fr. Abraham Orapankal have formed a spiritual network, a web of friendship; social media can help you to maintain this connection and expand it to even more families throughout the world. It is important, though, that these media never become a threat to the real web of flesh and blood relationships by imprisoning us in a virtual reality and isolating us from the very relationships that challenge us to grow to our full potential in communion with others. Perhaps Ted and Nisha s story will help all families to question whether they need to cut down on the time they spend with technology, and to spend more quality time with one another and with God. It is worth reading the entire speech of the Pope as he makes similar remarks about the testimony of all those families on different challenges they faced and yet stayed as a family. 3 By now, members should be aware that the Supreme Council has adopted a new model under which Knights, councils and assemblies must organize their activities. The new FAITH IN ACTION model has been promoted in detail in KnightLine magazine and Columbia Magazine. Our activities are to be organized among four priorities FAITH, COMMUNITY, FAMILY, and LIFE. The new mission-driven platform replaces the Surge With Service model that we had been following for decades. Accordingly, St. Joseph Council has reorganized our program activity structures to match the Faith in Action model, as seen in the new organization chart, below. As we move forward, all of us will be asked to support council activities among those categories, consistent with our individual interests as Knights. This month, council of icers and directors will meet to discuss how we can best obtain your individual support. (See the energize our council article in the August Knight Worth News.) Following that meeting, the council s Member Involvement Committee will contact individual members seeking to bolster the council s FAITH IN ACTION committee structure and to improve it with your ideas. When you are contacted please do not ignore the committee member! 3

4 Two of Father James Kyrpczak s early initiatives after arriving at St. Joseph Parish involved new communion chalices, patens and Sanctus bells and the introduction of a new group of Altar Servers. On August 10, the liturgical implements were blessed during the 5PM Mass and Altar Servers and Ministers of the Eucharist had the opportunity to use the sacred implements. Fr. James also used the ceremony as an opportunity to acknowledge the role of St. Joseph Council in the purchase of the implements. Photos by John Lisnock Additional photos at 4

7 Council members, spear-headed by brother Jim Murray, Knights from our neighbor council, local businesses and St. John Neumann Parish rallied to assist David Codd, son of brother Jim Codd, with a fund raising picnic. David (seen above with his mom) had been experiencing severe breathing problems and tests revealed that Dave had a collapsed lung. He was hospitalized in October Surgery revealed a tumor deeply embedded at the opening of where his left lung was located. He was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma a very rare type of cancer. It resulted in the removal of lymph nodes and removal of Dave s entire left lung. The treatment team grew to more than 30 doctors. Following surgery, Dave had to undergo proton radiation therapy. Medical bills have been more than $50,000 above his medical insurance coverage and David was unable to work until recently. The fund raising picnic raised more than $6,400 for him. 9 In September, we will conduct two activities at St. Joseph Church to promote the Knights of Columbus and to try to get more members. After the weekend masses on September 8 and 9, we will distribute copies of the updated council brochure (see next page) to parishioners as they exit church. The following weekend September 15 and 16 Father James has offered us an opportunity to speak to the congregation at mass about the Knights. Members will be available to talk to prospective members after masses. We need ALL members who attend St. Joseph Church to do two things on those two weekends: 1. Remain 5 minutes after mass to assist the Membership Committee to distribute the council brochures and to help obtain contact information from prospective members. 2. Wear your council name tag to show the parish who we are. (Please wear it whether or not you will be able to stay after mass to assist the committee!) It s easy duty it will require almost no effort on your part!!! * * Don t just slough! I read somewhere that every hour we each slough off approximately 60,000 skin fragments, 160,000 motes of dust and 20,000 articles of clothing lint. To me., those are astounding data and seem to indicate just how dif icult for us to just be! (I can t begin to imagine how dif icult it was for someone to have measured all of that activity.) At the minimum, it seems like each of us are awfully busy even when we are doing nothing else other than breathing and pumping blood through our own bodies. It sounds pretty exhausting! That said we are expected to do a lot more in life while all of that sloughing is going on! And the council is asking you to spend just 5 or 10 minutes of extra effort this month..... nuff said? 9
