2 Brothers all, T hanks go out this month to all of you who pay your dues on time each and every year -- it is very much appreciated, especially by our financial secretary. To the several brothers who find it difficult to get dues in on time, please remit as soon as possible to lessen the time and effort expended by the retention committee to contact you and to avoid the suspension process that will begin in March per the Order s Constitution & By-laws. If you have extenuating circumstances preventing you from paying your dues kindly contact me. Warm thanks also to Jen & Mark Kucharski and his family of chefs who continue to do great things like the Lenten spaghetti dinner this past Friday evening. The dinner was exceptional and we raised a good amount of money for our annual Culture of Life Baby Shower event. A big thank you also to Jim Codd and Rich Mirocco and all other volunteers for their help in pulling this off every year--well done spaghetti team! Very happy to see the many Knights coming out to weekday Lenten mass at 7 PM, we know this makes Fr. M feel especially good having our support. Please continue coming out for the rest of Lent. Vivat Jesus! Kevin Lenten Observances Fr. Maurice Carlton has provided us with opportunities to recognize Lent in a more spiritual way at St. Joseph Church by: Celebrating daily mass at 7:00 PM Attending a Parish Mission on Thursday evenings February 25, March 10 and March 17. Attending a Penance Service on Monday March 7 or Monday March 14 2

3 BEYOND EASTER CONFUSIONS! Have you been confused about Easter dates? Look at these two confusions: Last year Easter was on April 5; this year it is on March 27; next year it is on April 16. Confused as to why? Here s the second one: the Orthodox Christians and the rest of the Christian world keep two different dates for Easter every year! There is a simple explanation to both and a complicated one. Let me attempt only the simple one here! Unfortunately, the Gospel writers did not record the exact date of the resurrection! We only know that the Resurrection occurred after the Jewish Passover. Hence the Christians wanted to keep Easter annually after the Passover feast of the Jews. But the Jews followed lunar calendar (as do Muslims) while the Christians followed the solar calendar which had 11 days more. Hence calculating one against the other has always been problematic, producing different dates each year. And the cause of the second confusion: The variation between the churches occurred due to the Eastern Orthodox church following the Julian calendar as opposed to the Gregorian calendar used by the Western churches. Despite these variations, what is important for us is to enter the spirit of this foundational feast of our faith, trusting fully in the unconditional merciful love of God. Opening the Holy Doors in Rome, as part of the reminders of the Holy Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said: "To pass through the Holy Door means to rediscover the infinite mercy of the Father who welcomes everyone and goes out personally to encounter each of them. This will be a year in which we grow ever more convinced of God's mercy. Let us set aside all fear and dread, for these do not befit men and women who are loved. Instead, let us experience the joy of encountering that grace which transforms all things." We have plenty of opportunities to encounter this grace of God in the remaining weeks of Lent leading to the most Holy Week of the year (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday), and the glori- Fr. Abraham Orapankal ous feast of Easter. Are we growing in our understanding of God s mercy as revealed in the Word of God? What efforts are we making in our personal and family life to achieve this ideal that will be so beneficial to us? Easter Blessings from your brother in Christ, Fr. Abraham Orapankal On April 28, St. Joseph Council will celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Watch for details!!! 3

4 56 Ways to Be Merciful During the Jubilee Year of Mercy (Continued from February issue) God, who is merciful, desires our mercy. Here are additional ways to keep to mercy during the Jubilee Year. See February KWN for Try randomly selecting one each week and putting it into practice. 29) Make a list of your enemies. Then, every day, say a prayer for them. 30) Make a point to smile, greet or make conversation with someone who is not in your everyday circle. 31) Give away something of yours (that you really like) to someone you know would enjoy it. 32) Pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet as you are traveling to or from work. 33) When mercy for others is difficult, pray Cardinal Merry del Val s Litany of Humility. 34) Make a gratitude journal for your spouse and jot down little things he or she does that you re grateful for. Bite your tongue and go write in it (or at least read it) the next time you want to criticize in a moment of frustration. 35) Learn to make an Ignatian Examen every night. Remembering God s mercy each night helps us be merciful. 36) Respond to provocation with the respect you wish a person would show you. 37) Learn the Jesus Prayer and use it. 38) Take a few minutes during the week to stop at a church and sit before the Tabernacle simply to be with Christ, the Merciful. If you cannot do that, meditate upon the crucifix. 39) Pray a novena for the good of someone you dislike. 40) Dig out your most attractive stationery and handwrite an actual letter to someone as a means of demonstrating his or her importance to you. 41) Offer to read to someone who is feeling ill or is just feeling blue. 42) Ask the Holy Spirit to groan for you when you cannot bring yourself to pray for someone who has done you an injury. 43) Lead with a kind comment with friends as well as strangers. 44) When conversations devolve into the dark joy of gossip, help change the subject. 45) Can you play the piano, or any instrument? Can you recite poetry? Give free concerts to the forgotten people in nursing homes and assisted-living centers. 46) Visit the graves of your ancestors, or visit a local cemetery and walk around, praying a rosary for all the souls buried there. 47) Go on retreat. It s a way to be merciful to yourself and the people around you, who know you need to go on retreat. If you cannot do that, at least try to make a day, or evening, of recollection. 48) Admit your jealousy to yourself and your confessor. 49) Offer to pray with someone, even someone you encounter on the street or public transport who looks like they could use it. 50) Keep holy cards, short prayers or blessed medals handy and give them out to people you meet as you are inspired as a blessing to others. 51) Offer hospitality in your home to someone or a group of people you would normally never invite over. 52) With a few other people at your church, plan a party and invite all those from the highways and byways to come. 53) If someone you know seems to lack faith, share some of yours tell him or her how Christ has changed your life. 54) Pay the parking or toll fee for the person behind you. 55) Give the much-maligned Pope Benedict XVI a fair reading sometime. You ll be surprised. 56) Pray every day for the souls in purgatory. Pray for your dead 4

8 DUES UPDATE If you haven't paid your dues, you ve received a letter from our Grand Knight. And you ve been contacted by the council s Retention Committee. If you don t pay your dues soon, the council will have to proceed towards suspending you. Why would any member permit himself to be suspended??? Please pay your dues today! Insurance Corner Long-Term Care Plans Offer Peace of Mind Since its addition to the Order s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there s an added bonus. It s called Provider Pathway, a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network includes discounts on products, such as hearing aids, diabetic supplies, personal emergency response systems, and durable medical equipment, as well as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult day care. Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements. If you haven t yet spoken with me about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a plan a comprehensive plan that covers care whether you re at home or in a facility, or one that covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and benefit durations (how much and how long it will last); and the length of the elimination period (waiting period) before benefits kick-in. Having a professionally trained agent and a brother Knight you can trust to help guide you through the process is yet another valuable benefit that comes with your membership. Take advantage of it; contact me today. Fraternally yours, Brian Daly (908) brian.daly@kofc.org 8
