1 Knight Worthy News St. Joseph Council 10627, High Bridge, New Jersey A Catholic men s organization promoting Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Family and Patriotism January 2017 (Area Code 908 unless otherwise noted) Brothers all, As we look back on a great year for 2016 with both our activities and our membership growing, let's all begin to look forward to 2017 and the even greater things we can accomplish. By adding new members who are quality guys with hopefully new ideas we can continue to grow our council. Thanks to all the brothers who have been involved and continue to stay involved in all that we do. Thanks also to the new brothers joining us who will see all of the quality programs we run that positively affect people. Please bring any new ideas forward at any of our regularly scheduled meetings which are held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7:30pm in the Upper Room. 2 DID YOU MISS THE REAL CHRISTMAS? DON'T WORRY! How was your Christmas? Did it turn out to be all that you had hoped for and had planned for? I read this nice reflection about missing the real Christmas: If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point. But don t worry, the compassionate God gives you another chance to begin this New Year well! Start anew! That is truly a consoling message! It can be applied not only for Christmas, but also for those of us who really want to make a difference in this New Year. If we do not wish to make New Year Resolutions because we are discouraged with our past failures to keep them, don't worry. We can try again. I remember a picture of a little girl writing with a pencil that has a prominent eraser. The caption under that picture stayed with me now for many decades: Anyone can make a mistake; that's why pencils have erasers! As we step into the New Year, that caption makes me realize that I can start all over again! G.K. Chesterton said: Unless you make New Year resolutions again, unless you start afresh about things, you will certainly do nothing effective. 4 Three new men were inducted into our council in December. Matt Furka is an Electrical Engineering student, a Junior, at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. Matt is a lifelong St. Joseph parishioner. Matt attended an Admission Degree at the Jubilee Council in Flemington. Vince McGourty, also a St. Joseph parishioner, attended the Flemington degree. Vince is a Communications Consultant. He and his wife, Kassy live in Clinton. Also joining us in December was Tim Waldron, the son of brother Tom Waldron and his wife, Harmony. Tim attended an Admission Degree hosted by the council at St. Joseph Church. He s a sophomore at Rutgers University, majoring in Chemical Engineering. Welcome brothers! 4

5 2017 Dues Our annual dues are due January 1! When we became Knights, we were informed of the obligation to pay annual dues. If you haven't already paid your dues, you are delinquent and our F. S. must prepare and send a reminder to you. Following that, a member of the council s Retention Committee must contact you. That s extra work and expense for the council! And it s avoidable if you will cooperate. Please pay your dues today! If you have a problem meeting your dues commitment, we can handle that! 7 Editor s Note: The article below is from the December 1, 2016 issue of The Catholic Spirit. Tyler Fishbein is the seminarian St. Joseph Council is assisting on his journey towards the priesthood. Seminarian from diocese discusses journey to priesthood at liturgy By Marianne Zanko Komek PERTH AMBOY Tyler Fishbein, a seminarian at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, South Orange, gave a talk for vocations at Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Our Lady of Hungary worship site at Mass Nov. 5 and Nov. 6. His talk was one of nine scheduled to be given by seminarians from the diocese at parishes during National Vocations Awareness week. The Catholic Spirit will publish coverage of two more later this month. Reflecting on his decision to become a priest at a Nov. 5 Mass, he said, My journey to the priesthood was more than fulfilling to me. This is really what I m called to do. While growing up, he was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Old Bridge, where he taught religious education classes since he was 16 and volunteered at its soup kitchen. He also helped with the missionary collections for tent cities and had his first job there working with children in their aftercare program. His mother teaches kindergarten at the parish school. As a youth, he participated in gymnastics, baseball and basketball. When he was 10, he went through a difficult time when one of his coaches died. It was then that he accompanied his mother to the Padre Pio Shrine in Barto, Pa. While there, he had a spiritual experience that was very moving and left a lasting impression on him. Although open to a different vocation, he said that Christ speaks through others. Frequently, people would come up to him and say, You would make a good priest. However, he brushed them off, not thinking it possible, but a visit to his grandfather changed everything. I called him Pop, and he was a man I looked up to my entire life who has since passed, Fishbein said. He pointed at me and said, You see him? He is going to become a priest. And in that moment, I heard the words of Christ. He said that later his grandfather asked him why he was going to become a priest he had no recollection of his words to his grandson. After contacting the vocations director, he went through the process of getting accepted into the seminary. Speaking about his life there, Fishbein said, It s not much different from your average college life. I go to class, play ball and go out with my friends. I work very hard but I also have a lot of fun, he said. Although he was never in a Catholic youth group or an altar server and never visited a seminary before entering, Fishbein said, Yet God chose me. He could also choose you. You just have to be open to his call and hear his voice. In closing, he asked everyone to pray for him and promised that he would remember them in his prayers. The congregation showed their appreciation with applause. I thought he was excellent and I wish that I had some sons that could take after him. He was very inspirational and I hope and pray that some of the young boys will listen to him because he was really great, said Kathy Lochli, an extraordinary minister of holy Communion, about Fishbein s talk. Parishioner Geri Westcott said, It was very nice and I m very proud of him. He s going to make a very nice priest. The talk was very heartwarming. I wish the seminarians well. We need all the help we can get. He looks like a nice young man and should make a good priest, Robert Kovacs, an usher, said. Msgr. John B. Gordon, pastor, Most Holy Name of Jesus, said, Tyler is assigned to our parish to complete a pastoral semester of 40 hours in visits to the sick, serving at liturgy, attending parish meetings, and visiting catechism classes and Catholic school to share his vocation story. 7
