COP OUT FOR LENT? Yes, Lent is upon us - a period of selfpurification, prayer and good deeds. So how do we celebrate Lent? Well, isn t it an oxymoron to say that we can celebrate a season that is usually associated with unpleasant ideas like fasting, penance and discipline leading to unwelcome feelings of hunger and boredom? Not really! Take the case of fasting. Why is it that there is a general attitude of dismissal or belittling to fasting while dieting is held in high esteem? It has to do with the focus of each. In dieting, we focus on ourselves: how good we will look, how well people will speak of our appearance etc. In fasting, the focus is on God who invites us to enter into greater communion with God and people. That can be puzzling to our modern mind as we wish to know how it will benefit us. Fasting brings many more benefits, in addition to the benefits from dieting, Lenten fasting makes us strong spiritually to combat the evils around us and make the right choices in life. It reveals to us our dependence on God rather than the resources of the world. As the Catholic Church respects the freedom of the individual, the rules of fasting have been relaxed very much. The obligatory days of fasting are reduced to only twice a year: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals. (USCCB) This watered down version does not really help us to have any physical, psychological or spiritual benefits, unless we make fasting as a regular practice of life. That is why the truncated understanding of fasting can be a copout for Lent! But the good news is: while keeping it, we can also have a much more expanded notion of fasting as this fascinating prayer I came across teaches: Fast from judging others; feast on Christ in them. Fast from wanting more; feast on being thankful. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from worry; feast on trust. Fast from complaining; feast on enjoyment. Fast from negatives; feast on positives. Fast from stress; feast on prayer. Fast from anger; feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from fear; feast on truth. Fast from discouragement; feast on hope. Fast from gossip; feast on silence. Fast from fighting; feast on peace. Gentle God, during this season of fasting and feasting, gift us with your presence so we can be a gift to others in carrying out your work. Amen. Yes, let us celebrate Lent! Your brother in Christ, Fr. Abraham Orapankal Fr. Abraham Orapankal 2

MEETING NOTICE Council meetings during Lent will begin at 7:45 pm to permit us to attend the 7 pm evening mass at St. Joseph Church. April meetings will be on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays to avoid conflict with Holy Week. (See the calendar on the last page) 3

Men's Social Thanks to brothers Tom Klawunn, Jim Codd, Mark Kucharski and everyone who participated in another great evening of fraternalism! Andy Kin photos 4

Volunteer Participate! We ve changed the process for members who want to attend or volunteer for family, youth, community and other council events and projects. Our Sign-up! web page will list the current events and projects and you ll be able to sign up for an event by clicking on a link to the event and entering your information. The actual sign-up will be handled by Sign Up Genius will also send invitations directly to members and will send reminders to volunteers or participants before the event. Directors Mark Kucharski and Chris Denis used the Sign Up Genius service successfully and members have already received Sign Up Genius invitations to participate in the 2017 ARC collection, Lenten Pasta Supper and Family Bowling events. We ve made the process easier but whether or not it s successful is up to our members! Editor s Note: The following article recently appeared in the ARC of Hunterdon newsletter. Did you know the Knights of Columbus have been supporting The Arc of Hunterdon for over 10 years? They've donated over $125,000 in that time. These donations are solely from The Hunterdon County Knights of Columbus Chapters. They have fully embraced The Arc of Hunterdon in their mission. As a self-advocate, agency member, parent of an individual supported by The Arc, friend of the agency, or an employee...what better way to say 'thank you' than to write a personal note expressing your gratitude for the tremendous support from Knights' volunteers. (Mr. Mattson included the names and addresses of the council in the county that have helped the ARC.) Donations like those from our friends at the Knights of Columbus help us bridge the gap created by the recent loss of Hunterdon County and United Way funding. Thank you in advance for sharing your appreciation by sending a note today! 7

Protesting Planned Parenthood Funding Andy Kin, Fred Loozen and Mark Loozen (below left) participated with others who support ending public funding for Planned Parenthood. The demonstration was conducted in front of the Planned Parenthood facility in Washington, NJ. The group had one peaceful counterdemonstrator (below right) supporting Planned Parenthood (and, of course, the opportunity for women to kill their babies).
