Call Mary Lou Kelley ( ) Reformation 500 The ELCA is celebrating the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation in 1517 this coming year, starting October Zion has a team of creative folks who will help us with fun ways to mark the anniversary. As part of the ELCA-wide celebration Augsburg Fortress, the publishing ministry of the ELCA, is hosting a book sale. Several books will be available to purchase at 50% off the regular price, with free shipping. The books will include the life and writings of Martin Luther, the impact of the Reformation for our day, a graphic novel for young readers and an atlas (the pastor s favorite!) of the European Reformations. Stop by the table in the hallway October 23 and October 30 before and after worship to review and buy fascinating books on the Reformation. How about a shot in the arm? Give YOURSELF a gift of health... at the Zion FLU-SHOT CLINIC Sunday, October 30th 10:15 11:15am in the Library Zion member & RN, Beth Meyer, will administer Flu vaccinations to all who need/want to arm themselves this winter. 2 Zion News monthly - October W. 8th St - Davenport IA page 2 from the Pastor God s Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. the kingdom s ours forever! ELW #504 Do you know who wrote this 4 th verse of one of the most well-known hymns in the Lutheran Church? Do you know who was a professor at the University of Wittenberg, in Germany in the 1500 s? Do you know who translated the Bible into German? These are just a few fun facts about Martin Luther, one of the men whose study of the Bible resulted in a new way to be Church. Together, with many others, Martin Luther sought to reform the Catholic Church of the 16 th century. One result of the Reformation was the formation of the Lutheran Church. We will be celebrating the work of all reformers for the next year. One of Luther s gifts to the Church was formulating a doctrine that recognizes God s grace, rather than our works, in freeing us from the chains of sin. As followers of Jesus, our works continue his work. But they do not determine our salvation. God does/has already. That s why our t-shirts and ELCA logos say, God s work, our hands. Fred Pratt Green wrote, in ELW #729, The church of Christ, in every age, beset by change, but Spirit-led, must claim and test its heritage and keep on rising from the dead. If we claim to be part of a reforming church, and we do, we give thanks for our heritage, understand how that history has formed us, and then we keep on rising from the dead; we let the Spirit stir us, disturb us, guide, and protect us from all that keeps us separated from the love of God, in Christ Jesus our Lord. We can be confident of the Spirit s work because God s Word forever shall abide, and, God fights by our side. If anything or anyone tries to get in the way of that love, they cannot win the day, because the kingdom s ours forever. Hallelujah! We look forward to a year of learning, or maybe refreshing our memories of the gifts of the Reformation. We also look forward to considering how the Reformation continues in our lives today. Pastor Karen Ullestad All are invited to join in a Webcast with ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton Ecumenical and interreligious witness and the Reformation Anniversary Commended to God s eternal care Lloyd G. Bartling September 7, 2016 Almighty God, source of all mercy and giver of comfort, graciously tend those who mourn, that, casting all their sorrow on you, they may know the consolation of your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Thursday, 7th 7:00-8:00pm Join Presiding Bishop Elizabeth for a live webcast on the eve of the Reformation anniversary, exploring What was the Reformation and what does it mean for Lutherans and ecumenical partners? What is Declaration on the Way, and why is it significant for Lutheran-Catholic relations? What might ecumenical and interreligious relationships look like in the future? and more! 4 Zion News monthly - October W. 8th St - Davenport IA page 4 Reaching out in Love: Outreach Ministries Janine s jottings Neighborhood & Community Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU to Thrivent for their participation and generous sponsorship of our September Community Dinner! We had a wonderful group of about a 100 people who enjoyed an evening of food and fellowship. Thank you Thrivent for your generous gift and support. Community Dinner: Mark your calendars... On Wednesday Oct.19th Zion will host a Fall Festival -and- an Oktoberfest Style Community Dinner! The Festival fun & games will be at 5:30pm for kids & adults alike. Then at 6:00pm, join us as we enjoy a meal of brats and hot dogs, potato salad, fresh veggies and fruit and of course dessert. If you make a special potato salad for your family please plan to share it with us October 19. Our monthly dinners are a great way to share a meal and fellowship with our friends and neighbors. ALL are invited to join the Fun!! Food Pantry: The food pantry is always a busy place, with stocking shelves, picking up food at the food bank and filling boxes and bags; there is never a dull moment. If you wonder what goes on at the pantry please join us Monday or Thursday, 3:30-5:00pm. We are always excited to show one of the ways Zion reaches out to our community through the sharing of food. A special thank you to all who so generously have been sharing produce from their gardens; everyone has appreciated this gift of fresh vegetables and say a heartfelt thank you. A pantry fact: during the month of August the pantry served 105 households benefitting 433 individuals with 192 being children. A pantry request: In conversations with our pantry guests we have found that many are in need of calendars and greeting cards. Then we discovered that many of us receive many more calendars and greeting cards in the mail than we can use.so we are asking you to consider donating them to the pantry. All you have to do is drop them off with Janine and they will be shared at the pantry. Thank you in advance. Looking ahead to November: The Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot will begin Nov. 2nd. Again this year we will be filling 70 food boxes. This annual Thanksgiving event allows us, as a community of faith, to share the gifts of food with those in our Zion family, neighborhood and community who are experiencing food insecurity. God s Peace. Janine BREAD FOR THE WORLD Offering of Letters On Sunday, October 16th, Zion will join thousands of churches across the country to lift up God's vision of a world without hunger.
