Maundy Thursday (April 2) 7:00pm Worship with holy communion, and stripping of the altar. Good Friday (April 3) 7:00pm Tenebrae; service of shadows, readings and prayers leading to the cross with Jesus. Alleluia! He is risen! EASTER Sunday - April 5th 9:00am Festival Worship celebrating the Resurrection of Our Lord with Word, Sacrament, and lots of Music! 10:15-11:15am Easter Breakfast Come enjoy a hot and delicious breakfast of egg casseroles, rolls & muffins, coffee & juice provided and served by our Zion Youth and Hospitality team! Cost is a freewill offering proceeds to be used for youth ministries. Easter Egg-Hunt for kids Come celebrate with us! The April COMMUNITY DINNER will be Wed., April 15th, 6:00pm Zion will serve up a pre-easter meal of Lasagna, tossed salad, garlic bread, and desserts to our friends, neighbors, and our Zion family. Sign up on the bulletin board across to provide what you can and/or help with set-up, serving, or clean-up. And remember, EVERYONE is invited to come eat & have great conversation & fellowship!

Let ev ry instrument be tuned for praise; let all rejoice who have a voice to raise; and may God give us faith to sings always: Alleluia! (ELW #851) Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise? Every instrument? Well, yes. Whether your voice is crackly or angelic. Whether your instrument is old or newly in tune, Easter morning will be a day for all the stops to be pulled, all the trumpets to resound, and all who have a voice to shout, Alleluia! Because: The strife is o er the battle done, now is the victor s triumph won. Because: Jesus Christ is ris n today. Because: God has brought forth Israel into joy from sadness. Easter morning is a glorious day. The pews are filled, the musicians have worked hard, the flowers fragrance the room. The story of Jesus brings us hope. With a whole room full of faithful followers our voices blend together to worship our God who raised Jesus from the tomb. Some will even ask, can we do it again this way next Sunday? The purpose of Easter, though, is not just to rejoice in the glory of Sunday. In Christ s resurrection, the whole creation has been made new. We are raised from whatever our tombs are, to go in peace and serve the Lord every day of our lives. So how will Easter sound on Monday? Pastor Karen Ullestad What is a Chasuble? You may have noticed the extra robe Pastor wears on Sunday mornings. What is it? Ministers of a worship service usually wear a white or off-white alb. It is the basic vestment worn by any of the leaders of worship. The cincture is the rope/belt around the waist. The stole is the colored banner worn around the shoulders by ordained or consecrated leaders as an indication of their pastoral office. The outer robe is called a chasuble. The Lutheran church believes that in the Eucharist, the ordained minister is the one who represents God s initiative and expresses the connection of the local community with other communities of the Church. (From the Means of Grace) An ordained pastor, then presides at the service of Holy Communion. The chasuble indicates which leader is the presider. Pastor s new chasuble (and stole) for Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday was a generous gift from some Zion members. It was sewn by a long time friend of Pastor Karen, who purchased the silk in Cambodia, after visiting a silk farm and market. Gifts Fair Our stewardship emphasis, during Lent, invited us to lift up the gifts God has given us. April 26, following worship, we will have a chance to commit to new opportunities, or recommit to our current ministries. Each committee and small group will have a table around the narthex and lounge. Members of the groups will be happy to describe the kinds of gifts needed in and around Zion. This will help each one of us share the gifts God has given us.

3 Zion News monthly - April W. 8th St - Davenport IA page 3 SUNDAY SCHOOL Scoop During Lent, the entire Zion family has taken time to think about blessings received and how our gifts have blessed others. The SPARK Sunday School children are now using special envelopes to hold offerings of thanks for their blessings. Money received will go toward purchasing fabric for a Lutheran World Relief blanket which they will complete together on May 10. Our gifts will become a blessing to someone in need! Following Easter Day, we will focus on stories of Ten Men Healed and The Widow s Offering. The drama, art, and music leadership needs for those Sundays are posted across from the office. Please check the schedule and choose a time you are able to serve. We know you will find the time you spend with our children rewarding and you will be a blessing to our children of Zion. For the SPARK Team: Laurie Harrison Confirmation News 7 of our young people will be completing their confirmation studies this month, and will look forward to the service of Affirmation of Baptism, May 17. This month they will be working on a creative way to talk about their experience of God in a "Faith Statement." We rejoice that Addison, Anna, Dustin, Grace, Jessica, Kate and Kaylyn have been given the gift of faith to live and proclaim. Sunday-Morning Adult Christian Ed Faith Talks Sunday mornings 10:15 in the Chapel April 5: Easter-no class April 12: A Conversation on Bullying: A look at the dynamics of bullying and intervention strategies. Facilitated by our own Anthony Howland. Anthony has presented on this topic both on the state and national levels. Join us as we explore this very important subject which affects many both young and old. April 19: Alzheimer s Disease: Early detection matters. Join us as we learn the 10 signs. Facilitator: Jerry Schroeder from the local Alzheimer s Association.. ATTN: Zion College Students Apply for Scholarships Now! Zion currently has two active Scholarship funds for youth who are Zion members currently in or about to enter college. The EPIC Scholarship fund helps students attending Lutheran colleges in Iowa. The General Scholarship fund helps all other college students from Zion. You may apply for only one of the Scholarships, once per year you are attending college. A new Zion Scholarship Application form is included with this Zion News, posted on our website, and available in the Zion office see Beth. The amount of assistance awarded each applicant is based on the funds available and the number of applications received. Applications must be received by May 11 th to be considered. Neighborhood & Community Outreach Thank you to all those who assisted and participated with the Lenten meals, they helped us to learn a little more about our global neighbors and partners. What an adventure we all had as we tried new and different types of foods both in eating and preparing. Thank you all for the good food and fellowship. April Community Dinner will be held April 15th from 6:00-7:00pm. Supper will be lasagna, tossed salad, garlic bread and dessert. Check out the signup sheets across from the office. Please join us for fun, food and fellowship. Food Pantry News: Come and join the pantry crew as we serve our neighbors and community through the ministry of providing food. The pantry is open Monday and Thursday 3:30-5:00. There is always something to do from signing people in to stocking shelves to filling grocery bags to picking up food at the food bank. This provides us with many opportunities to get to know and learn from each other. Please prayerfully consider how God might be calling you to service at the pantry. If you have questions or want a tour let me know or ask one of the folks who help at the pantry, because we would love to give you a tour and show you the ropes. Zion s Neighborhood Ministry Team will meet April 13 at 5:00 in room 8. The W rappers Prayer Shawl Group will not meet in April, but will try again in May. We will be in the narthex after the Service. Pick & choose between your favorite cookies for only $5.00 per pound! Our focus this year is updates for the Dengler Lounge. Reminder: The Cluster 6 Women s spring gathering will be at Zion on Saturday, April 11th, beginning with refreshments at 8:30-9:00am, then a program on human trafficking. ALL women are encouraged to attend! Morning Book Review Join a group of folks on Monday, April 20th at 9:00am to discuss All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr The story is an account of two teenagers coming of age on opposite sides of the conflict during World War II. One is a blind girl living in Paris and then moving in 1940 to the Brittany town of Saint-Malo before the German occupation. The other character is Werner, an orphan in a German industrial and mining town whose talent in fixing radios gets him to an elite training camp and is given an assignment t o track the resistance. This book is very popular right now and may be difficult to find, but check libraries, used book stores and the internet. The book is in hardback only at this time.
