2 Zion News monthly - February W. 8th St - Davenport IA page 2 From our Pastor Now thank we all our God, with hearts and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices; who, from our mothers' arms, has blest us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. (ELW #840) These words were written by Martin Rinkhart, who lived in the 16th century, during the tumultuous time of the 30 years war. What I find amazing about these words is that he wrote this hymn after a year of presiding at 4000 funerals. This was a man who was able to name God's wondrous deeds in the midst of enormous tragedy and death. From the moment we are born, Rinkhart says, we are blessed with countless gifts. And those blessings remain with us throughout our life. What a joy to hear you all express thanks for your blessings at our congregational meeting/brunch. We are blessed with God's grace and forgiveness, love and compassion, abundance and generosity- made known through this community in Christ. We are blessed, "on our way," in our calling to proclaim the wondrous things God has done. Some days it is easier than others to feel God's call as blessing. We don't understand what, where, or who we should be. We don't feel worthy, we don't have time, we don't have the desire to hear God call. The blessing of being gathered into community is that we can share the joys and difficulties of our call with one another. We affirm one another's calling to proclaim God's countless gifts of love, knowing that each call will be different according to our gifts. The richness of God is made known through our diversity. As St. Paul told the Corinthians, there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit... to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. The blessing of being gathered into community is that we can share the joys and difficulties of our call with one another. Paul affirms our individual calling, but in the context of the community. I invite you to notice the blessings of your calling as a proclaim-er of God's love. Naming our blessings helps us grow in them, share them, and helps others notice theirs. Affirm how God has gifted you for the sake of the common good. Once you have noticed, come back Sunday morning, and, together with all the other Baptized into... followers of Jesus, let's thank God with our hearts, hands and voices. See you in worship! Welcome to the body of Christ! Pastor Karen Ullestad On the celebration of our Lord s baptism, January 12th, we celebrated the baptisms of Naomi Tihun Trenkamp and Kaylynn Nicole Miller We pray that they will know God s grace and love through their family at Zion. New Life!

As we begin a new year we are going to start over with a new list. If you would like someone to be on the list you are invited to write their name on the Prayer List in the church office. We will publish their names for a month. If a situation continues beyond one month, please ask the office to continue the prayer request. We will have one list that includes those who have been in the hospital, and on- going health concerns. We will list those in care centers and in the military separately. On the Global front A Potter Fights Malaria Not long ago, Juma Sumahil received a small grant from the church in Mozambique, supported by your gifts to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. He used it to start his malaria-fighting pottery business. With his new kickwheel and backyard kiln, he makes beautiful jugs and water filters, all with lids to keep mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water within. Sustainable livelihoods are important to our goal of making malaria history. A family with a steady income can plan and save for durable, preventive tools like mosquito nets. The ELCA Malaria Campaign includes programs that equip our companion churches for malaria prevention and eradication. Your generous giving makes this work possible. Thank you. See a video of Juma making a pot at blogs.elca.org/malariablog. LifeLines, Vol. 14, No. 3 Winter
