2 Zion News monthly - August W. 8th St - Davenport IA page 2 From the Pastor... How marvelous God s greatness, how glorious God s might! To this the world bears witness in wonders day and night: in form of flow r and snowflake, in morn s resplendent birth, in afterglow at evening, in sky and sea and earth. (ELW #830) The author of this hymn reminds us that not only humans, but all of creation bears witness to God s greatness. We join together with stars, and fish and corn on the cob to tell others about God s goodness. These months certainly heighten our awareness of the beauty of the sky, sea and earth. The gardens have been so lush with flowers and tomatoes, cucumbers and melons. The skies are pink and golden, blue and loaded with clouds. The sea and all water ways wait for our canoes, paddle boats and fishing rods. The summer months shape our vision to see the glory of God in colorful and creative ways. I hope you have had or will still have the chance to enjoy God s playground and garden. If you travel, there are many Lutheran churches to visit around the country. If you are taking days off, know that the refreshment of vacation makes us ready to begin our fall activities once again. We look forward to hearing your stories of God s greatness wherever your summer months have taken you. We continue to worship and serve each week at Zion and we keep you all in our prayers as you travel and find new ways to witness to God s glorious might. Pastor Karen Ullestad ELCA Anti-Racism Webcast Join ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and William B. Horne II, an ELCA member from Clearwater, Fla., for a live webcast conversation on the complexity and implications of racism on Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. (CDT). Through its social statement Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture ELCA members have expressed this church s calling to confront racism and advocate for justice and fairness for all people. Talking about race and racism is hard work for most of us, says Horne. Our Christian witness compels us to confront our sinfulness in all forms from within and outside of ourselves. It is more beneficial if we do it together. Go to elca.org for further information. A live stream will be available at Twitter hashtag is #ELCAConfrontRacism. God s Work, Our Hands On September 13th churches around the ELCA will once again celebrate God's work in the world through our hands. This year Zion will gather immediately following worship for an intergenerational opening and continental breakfast, and then participate in a congregational project, detailed below. Don't forget to wear your God's Work Our Hands t-shirt. If you don't have one, contact the church office to inquire about ordering one. Our congregational project for God s Work, Our Hands this year is Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Providing LWR Kits have been a long-time annual effort of Zion s Women, and now we are envisioning a new way to provide these kits. Joining with Zion's Faith Formation Team, we invite the entire Zion family to participate in a special "God's Work, Our Hands" response on September 13. Between now and Sept. 13th we invite everyone to collect items for the Personal Care Kits: 1 lt. weight bath-sized, dark colored towel (20"x40" - 27"x52") 2 bath size bars of soap (4-5ozs), left in original wrapping, any brand 1 adult-sized toothbrush in original pkg.* Tooth brush multi-packs may be used by sealing each toothbrush in business-sized envelope, no plastic bags or wrap 1 sturdy comb, packaging removed 1 metal nail clippers, attached file optional, packaging removed You can gather items at home and bring them on Sept. 13 or bring them on Sundays and place them in a box labeled LWR personal care kits. On the 13th during the Sunday School hour we will gather in Fellowship Hall, enjoy a simple brunch, and then put kits together as a community-intergenerational" activity, seeking to live out God's Work, Our Hands in a very "hands-on way! The gathering of Quilts will continue through Zion s Piece-corps quilters. This year fleece-tied blankets have been added. We have specific instructions for these from LWR. Individual women s circles may also do School Kits, and we have bags for them ( ask Carol DeBruyn or Cary Scott). We will have a special blessing for all items going to LWR during worship on Sunday, October 4th, and delivery to our distribution center in Cedar Rapids will be on Saturday, Oct. 17.

4 Zion News monthly - August W. 8th St - Davenport IA page 4 Janine's Jottings... Neighborhood & Outreach Ministries First things first Thank you to Lloyd Bartling for his generous gift of pizza for the Community Dinner. It was a wonderful treat enjoyed by everyone. Thanks Lloyd! August Community Dinner: All are invited for food and fellowship August 19th at 6:00 pm. We will come together to share a meal of Lasagna, bread, salad, fruit and dessert. Come One Come All! Annual School Supply Drive: School starts August 24 and we are collecting school supplies and will distribute them to our neighborhood schools (Monroe and Jefferson). School staff will then share them with students in need. We are asking for donations of: boxes of Kleenex, pump bottles of hand sanitizer, #2 pencils, blue and red pens, loose leaf paper and notebooks (wide lined only), glue sticks and 4 oz. bottles of glue, crayons-16 or 24 count, 2 pocket solid colored folders and back packs. These are just a few of the many items children need to start the year off ready to learn. If you are interested in making a donation or have a question feel free to stop and talk with me. Donations can be dropped off at the office or left under the Hospitality Table. The Jefferson and Monroe staffs express their thanks and appreciation for these much needed supplies. Food Pantry: Thank you and welcome to all who have been assisting at the food pantry this summer. The less hectic schedule of the summer has allowed some of our younger members to help out. What a blessing it has been to see their energy and excitement as they have been serving our neighbors and the community. Thanks be to God for All who serve at the food pantry. As a people of God we believe we have been called to this neighborhood to serve. Thus, we respond to the needs of our neighbors with what we have. It may be food, a smile, a handshake or words of greeting. In sharing these simple acts of hospitality and kindness each of you radiates the love of Christ. Zion not only do you nourish the body, but you also nourish the soul with your presence. Remember that God is present to others through you. Your work at the pantry and the community dinners are greatly appreciated by our neighbors as over and over again those who work at the pantry hear the thank yous and God bless yous of our neighbors. Thanks also to Pastor Karen for her support and to Beth for all the extras she does so well. All of these things make Zion the special place that it is. Keith Haan Thank you to all my Zion friends for all your prayers, cards, calls and visits, during my recent surgery and recovery.
