1 (563) ZION NEWS - March Vol Issue 3 March 3, 2017 A monthly publication of Zion Lutheran Church The Lenten Journey continues Wednesdays, March 8, 15, 22, and 29th with midweek Worship Reflections on the Catechism 12:00pm in the Chapel -and- 6:30pm in the Sanctuary following the Simple Soup Lenten Suppers (see next article this page) In this 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, we will gather each Wednesday for midweek worship to hear words from Martin Luther with a brief message, and a chance to respond visually by writing a word, creating an image, or a few sentences, maybe even a song! We will post our responses around the chapel and sanctuary each week. Come to the quiet and be centered in the One who meets us where we are, knows our burden, forgives our sin, draws us into loving community, treasures us as beloved children, and gives us rest. Bless now, O God, the journey... found in desert and winds the mountain round the road where faith is found. Lenten midweek and Holy Week offerings will be designated by Council at their retreat in March. Watch your bulletin announcements for this information. Lenten Wednesday SIMPLY SOUP Suppers 6:00-6:30pm In the season of Lent, we seek to immerse ourselves in Jesus love through worship, fellowship and simplicity. On the Wednesdays during Lent, we will have simple soup suppers for all who wish to partake, served beginning at 6:00pm, followed by worship at 6:30pm Soup and drink only will be offered. If your health requires more than that you are welcome to bring whatever else you may need for your dinner. Plan to make your Wednesday nights churchnights and enjoy the blessings of being fed in both body and spirit! Please contact Pastor Karen or Kris Preston if you are interested in providing soup and/or serving on any of the Wednesdays: March 22, 29, or April 5 Lenten Devotionals for those who like to do a daily devotion especially written for Lent are available at the Welcome table in the entryway/ Lounge area. There are a variety of devotionals for adult, children, or family reflections on this Lenten season, including The Word at Work, reflections on the Reformation. Stop by and pick one up soon. Growing in faith... to reach out in Love
2 page 2 From the Pastor... Bless now, O God, the journey that all your people make, the path through noise and silence, the way of give and take. The trail is found in desert and winds the mountain round, then leads beside still waters, the road where faith is found. ELW #326 To help mark the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, our presiding bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, has asked ELCA congregations to reflect on Luther s Small Catechism during Lent. The Small Catechism was designed as a teaching tool of the faith, not just within the church, but in the home. The Small Catechism is an explanation of the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord s Prayer, and the Sacraments- Baptism and Communion. Also included are prayers and suggested ways to worship during each part of the day. Here, at Zion, we will shape our midweek worship around the theme Reflections on the Catechism. We will hear from Martin Luther and I will offer a brief message. Then you all will have a chance to respond visually, by writing a word, creating an image, or a few sentences, maybe even a song! We will post our responses around the chapel and sanctuary each week. Starting March 8, join us Wednesdays at 12:00 noon in the chapel, or at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall for soup, and worship in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. May this Lenten journey provide nourishment and food for thought, on your road of faith. Pastor Karen Ullestad Membership movement Priscilla Anderson... designed as a teaching tool of the faith not just within the church, but also in the home. released to Bettendorf Christian Church Priscilla expresses much gratitude for the many memories made with the Zion congregation through the years she and her family were members here. Calling Janine Call to Word and Service: On February 26 Calvary Lutheran Church in Buffalo, Iowa voted to extend a part time call to me as a Deacon (20 hours per week). Deacons are part of the ELCA s Word and Service roster. As part of the call I will be responsible for preaching, teaching, and visitation alongside their visitation team. I will continue to be at Zion part time (20 hours per week) participating in the same ministries I have been involved with since joining the Zion staff. I am excited about this call as I hope it may provide occasions for Zion and Calvary to share in ministry opportunities. As congregations become smaller and not as many ordained ministers available for call to these churches, the Southeast Iowa Synod has been looking for ways to better serve all congregations of the Synod. With that in mind the Synod Office has been looking at the many and varied gifts of all rostered leaders, both ordained and consecrated, and how these leaders may work in cooperative ways to serve congregations of different sizes with varied needs and personalities. So, my call to Calvary as a Deacon is an opportunity to utilize and share my gifts for ministry with the ministries of Calvary. This is an exciting (and a bit scary) time for me as I step into a new ministry. And I thank all of you here at Zion for the support, encouragement and patience you have shown me as I have discerned God s call. Thank you. Janine Johnson Pig with a Purpose Name our pig! During the weeks of Lent we will be collecting offering for the ELCA s World Hunger Appeal. In the narthex there is a wooden pig with 5 buckets for 5 names. You may vote for your name choice by placing your offering in that bucket. Then you are welcome to sign your name on the pig. Whichever bucket has the most money will be the new name of our pig. This offering will be taken to our Synod assembly in May and join other congregations in fighting hunger around the world.
3 page 3 GROWING IN FAITH FORMATION! In March, our Spark Sunday School will include: 5 Art 12 Drama 19 Bible Skills/games 26 - Music for the making of new Christmas pageant costumes. Any material/cloth may be dropped off in the G.I.F.T. Zone. From March through May, Sunday school offerings will go towards purchasing Bibles from the ELCA.org, Good Gifts website. New growing Lutheran churches around the world need Bibles in their own language to preach, teach, study and share in God s promise of steadfast love. These Bibles are $12.00 each. We have continued learning about Martin Luther. These words help us tell what we know: LOVE, GIFT, BIBLE. As he kept reading his, Martin discovered God s forgiveness is a. He worried that the church was not teaching people what the said about God s. Got Fabric? Faith Formation Team is looking for material or cloth that anyone might have which could be used We re also working on A Friday Lock-In for the Wednesday-crowd! All Alleluia families are invited to a night of fun, food and fellowship on Friday, March 17th. Details to follow watch for notes to come home with the kiddos on a Wednesday soon, or talk with Rosie Bates. Sunday-Morning FAITH-TALKS March 5: A screening of the Rick Steve s video Luther and the Reformation and if time allows a little discussion. March 12, 19 and 26 will be a study of the book of Galatians led by Pr. Karen. Come and join the conversation! Reaching Out in Love... Janine's Jottings... Food Pantry News: In February Zion received exciting news that the pantry had been awarded a $ grant from the ELCA Domestic Hunger Grants program. Thank you ELCA. The pantry continues to be a busy place. In January we served 132 households. And a special thank you to all who donated calendars and greeting cards to the pantry. They have been a great success. People have expressed their appreciation for these items as they are things they would not regularly buy, because of the cost. What a wonderful gift. A reminder that the pantry is open Mondays & Thursdays 3:30-5:00pm. I invite you to join us for a shift. There is always something to do from signing people in to stocking shelves to filling grocery bags. Consider if God might be calling you to serve there. If you have questions or want a tour let me know or ask one of the folks who help out regularly, because we would love to show you around. Sign-up sheets are located on the bulletin board across from the office. Thank you from the staff and students of Monroe Elementary School for the gifts of hats, gloves, scarves, hand sanitizer and Kleenex. They expressed appreciation for the help and support we have provided them over the years. Thank you Zion. Zion s March Community Dinner will be Wednesday the 15th, 5:30-6:30pm. Please note the time change. We will have a simple meal of chili and bread. Join us for supper followed by Midweek Lenten Worship. All are invited!!! Come and participate as you are able. Hope to see you all there. God s Peace.
