On Sunday afternoon, August 7, right after worship, the whole congregation is going to be gathering for lunch in the dining room. The purpose of our gathering is to talk about our future as a church. I ve spoken several times with our Church Council, Fellowship of Deacons and other groups about where I think Calvary Baptist Church needs to be headed; now. I want to share some of those ideas with you, personally. We ll even take a few moments for our church committees to touch base on plans to move towards that vision. There are a number of things I will share with you that day but there is one thing I want you to begin contemplating, beforehand: Ministry Teams. To this point we had been using a model entitled Deacon Family Ministry. While that approach had been effective, we continued to seek ways we could involve the rest of the church family in reaching out together. Back in the winter, the Fellowship of Deacons at Calvary Baptist Church took a major step towards organizing to lead the whole congregation in ministering to the needs of our church and beyond. That new approach is what we call, Team Ministry. While the Team Ministries will replace Deacon Family Ministry each member of our Fellowship of Deacons continues to remain available to you and your family, regardless. While deacons are taking the lead in organizing Ministry Teams, they will be looking to involve every church member in doing ministry. To that end, Sunday, August 7, at the conclusion of our 'Share the Vision' luncheon, you will have an opportunity to become part of one of the ministry teams. To help you consider where you would like to serve, I want to introduce you to the teams we have presently and let you know about the work they intend to do. The first team I want to tell you about is the Hospital Ministry Team. This team will lead the church in visiting members that are hospitalized, having outpatient surgery or are taking part in short-term rehabilitation. This team may be doing things like, providing for special needs one may have during a stay in the hospital. They will also be working with the church office to keep track of those staying in the hospital. So, if you have a passion for caring for the sick, please prayerfully consider being a part of this team. Another team that will be looking for church members for help is the Homebound Ministry Team. It will be the mission of this team to reach out to the members of the Calvary Baptist Church family who are no longer able to attend activities and services at the church facility. It s very easy to feel disconnected from your church family when you are no longer able to attend. The Homebound Ministry Team will be ministering in different ways to these beloved saints reminding them they are still an essential part of Calvary Baptist Church. If you think this is a group you would like to minister too, the Homebound Ministry Team would love to have you join them. A third ministry team will concern itself with the needs of members who have lost family members to death. When a member of Calvary Baptist Church loses a family member, the Bereavement Ministry Team will be reaching out to offer a helping hand and spiritual support during their time of need. If you think that you have some ministry gifts that might be useful during such times, you are invited to be part of the Bereavement Ministry Team. Finally, the fourth ministry team will focus their attention of the welcoming of our guests who attend the various programs and services here at Calvary. The Hospitality Ministry Team will collect information from guests and follow up with contacts. The goal of this team is to make sure our guests feel welcome and that they are aware of the
ministry we aim to accomplish at Calvary Baptist Church. This is the team that will make a continued connection with those who have shown an interest in becoming part of our Church Family. If you think reaching out to those who need to be a part of this congregation is important, this may be the team for you! As I said before, there will be time at the Share the Vision Luncheon after worship on August 7 to find out more about our Ministry Teams and how you can become a part. So, begin to pray about how you will be involved in ministering together. Finally, make your plans now to be with your church family on August 7 as we begin to catch a vision for the future of Calvary Baptist Church! Your Pastor, Steven Be sure to plan to join us Sunday, August 7 th immediately after worship for a buffet lunch and to hear Dr. Pollard share his vision for Calvary! This church-wide event will be an exciting opportunity to Catch the Excitement, Witness the Joy and Shape the Vision for Calvary s future! Hurt Park School Supply Drive There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land. Deuteronomy 15:11 Swim gear is on sale, red, white and blue items are packed away, and back to school sales have begun. Once again, we can help our Hurt Park students begin their school year with new supplies. Visit our School Store in the parlor on Sunday, August 7 and 14, where you may purchase items for these students. The faculty, staff and students at Hurt Park are so appreciative for all Calvary does for them. Thanks to your generosity, our previous efforts have been very successful. We look forward to providing help again to these children. Janice Deyerle
Calvary is working in partnership with Bonsack Baptist and the RVBA to assist victims of the West Virginia floods. Shirley Fletcher and Bobbie Hawkins have graciously offered to act as Calvary s points of contact for the effort, coordinating pickups and deliveries from Calvary to Bonsack. The collection will extend through August 31 st. In addition to collections on Sundays, items may be dropped off at Calvary during regular office hours, M-Th 8:00 am 4:00 pm and Fri. 8:00 am noon. There is immediate need for the following: Kitchen items (pots, pans, dishes, silverware, glasses, kitchen utensils) Detergents Mops and brooms First Aid kits Feminine supplies Diapers Bath, Kitchen and Bed linens Toothbrushes & toothpaste Personal hygiene supplies Canned foods Dried beans Rice Pasta Additionally, collections are underway for furniture and household items, (e.g. lamps, tvs). Please contact the church office to arrange for pickup of those items to be taken directly to Bonsack for storage prior to delivery. As houses are being demolished and/or rebuilt there is a need for building supplies. There is a Lowe s store in the area so donations of Lowe s gift cards are especially welcome. If you wish to make a tax deductible cash donation, you may send a check directly to: First Baptist Church th Street Rainelle, WV (be sure to notate on the check that the donation is for either flood victim relief, or church rebuilding) Please keep the flood victims and the relief workers in your prayers as they begin the long and arduous task of rebuilding their lives.
Correction: The July Columns article about the churches who sponsor the Summer Enrichment Program should have included Huntington Court Methodist Church as one of the supporting churches. We apologize for the omission. Roanoke Area Ministries (RAM) Thank you for responding to our offering to assist the Roanoke Area Ministries as they seek to be able to continue touching lives in the name of our Lord. Donations totaled $ including a gift of $ from the Evelyn Townsend Circle. To date, RAM has received over $87,000 toward their $100,000 goal which will keep them open through the end of the year. If you missed our special collection you can still contribute. Just visit the RAM website to make an online donation. Please join us in our Dining Room on Wednesday, August 10 from 11:30 1:30. Chef Pollard will be serving up hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings. You re asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Drinks will be provided. Please call the church office to let us know that you will be attending. We can also review the signup sheet for the side dishes or desserts. All are welcome and we hope to see you there! The Sanctuary Choir will resume rehearsals for the Fall on Wednesday, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. We are seeking additional members for every section so please come Make a Joyful Noise with us! Please contact our Minister of Music, Dr. Seung-Won Cho (music@calvaryroanoke.org) or the church office for additional information.
The inaugural Friday Chill on Campbell, hosted by Calvary, was a huge success! Elizabeth Russell and The Slap Chop band was definitely a crowd pleaser! Mike Quarles der Frankfurter Cart served up yummy hot dogs that earned him lots of new friends and customers! And Deb's Frozen Lemonade was a welcome relief from the summer heat. When you re ready for a refill, you can find the schedules for der Frankfurter Cart and Deb s on their Facebook pages! Special thanks to David Kinsey, Bobby & Buddy Hawkins, Robert McKinney, Kevin Conner, Kim Pitts and Debbie Foutz for pitching in to bring together the advertising, games, music and food. And to Cara Sutherland for taking time to become a Pokemon Go! expert to help those gamers find those little critters around our property. A great time was had by all. Stay tuned for news about the next Friday Chill on Campbell! Calvary, in conjunction with seven other downtown churches, supported the 41st year of the Summer Enrichment Program throughout the month of July. Calvary supplied workers and funding for this important ministry. Thanks go to our volunteers Donna de Simone, Bobbie Hawkins, Diane Malpass, Cheryl Nicely, Kim Pitts and Cara Sutherland. We were particularly pleased that Dr. Pollard showed his support by visiting the camp. In addition, we greatly appreciate the monetary support from The Evelyn Townsend Circle and The Calvary Foundation. The program was very successful to teach, entertain, and promote physical activity for 60 children in a safe environment. The children created a token of their thanks and presented it to Calvary during the closing program. Look for it on our bulletin board. Mickey Cratch Chair The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will facilitate the Official Virginia State Boating course in August on the 15 th and 16th at Calvary. Who should take the class? 7 The Kinsey family welcomed their newest addition, Jadalee Kinsey on Sunday, July 17. Jadalee is the daughter of Tiffany and Steve Kinsey and grand daughter of David Kinsey. We give thanks for this new life and congratulate the proud Grandfather on the new addition to his family! Many thanks to all from Calvary s Sanctuary choir for your support of our Souper Sunday fundraiser lunches! We enjoy sharing the recipes you have asked for. We would love to share YOUR recipes too! Just send them to the church office and we will include them in future editions of The Columns. This month s featured recipe is a favorite dessert from Nancy Akers. Enjoy! Chocolate Dessert 1 Box Brownie Mix 1 Box Chocolate instant pudding mix (3.9 oz.) 1 Package (8 oz.) Heath Bar toffee bits 1 Container (12 oz.) Cool Whip Prepare brownies as directed. Set aside to cool completely. Prepare pudding as directed - but do Not chill Crumble half of the cooled brownies into the bottom of a trifle bowl. Top with half of the Heath bits. Spread half of the chocolate pudding on top, then spoon half of the Cool Whip over the pudding. Repeat in the same order with the remaining half of the ingredients and refrigerate before serving. The Wednesday Bible Study class will take a break for the month of August and resume in September.
Our offering envelopes (August 2016 July 2017) are on order and are scheduled to arrive mid-august. A communication will be sent as soon as they have arrived. Funny Bones A little boy walked down the beach, and as he did, he spied a woman sitting under a beach umbrella on the sand. He walked up to her and asked, "Are you a Christian?" She said, "Yes." "Do you read your Bible every day?" She nodded her head, "Yes." Do you pray often?" the boy asked next, and again she answered, "Yes." With that he asked his final question, "Will you hold my quarter while I go swimming?"
